Where can I get one?
WHere can I get a good art program for free (I had paint shop pro trial, it was good, but my time is up)? I want to make sigs and spraypaint color images again!!
Just about as powerful as Photoshop, just takes a bit longer to get used to. Yes, there is a Windows version available on the site, but you have to dig for it a little bit. And not only is it free, it's open-source.
Use it, learn it, never look back. Its very complicated after using something as user-friendly as PS. Had I never used PS before trying GIMP I may have stuck with it....and vever had to pay $600 + upgrades.
My only prob with Gimp is that is crashes constantly on my comp and I can't seem to make a "good" quality Jpeg save. Whenever I save something as a Jpeg in Gimp it comes out crappy quality. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
If you're having problems with jpeg compression rates, make sure you get those quality sliders for jpegs all the way to the right. Check your image bit depth, this might be causing problems as well ( i know these are simple things but hey, cant hurt to ask )
One thing that bugged me about the gimp was its lack of GIF support out-of-the-box, took some digging around in the debian apt-get package manager to find the right version of the non-free plugins... stupid proprietry image formats
Oh I know well about the quality slider. Its just that Even when I put it too full quality and tweek with the other save settingd to get it good quality it isn't for some damn reason. Its either blurry or pixely. And when I wanted to post a NS wallpaper it was really crap quality. I don't know, i'll read those links.
OK cool. Jpeg is fairly lossy regardless, unless your image size is MEGA.
Thing i really like about GIMP (apart from being free) is its nice handling of GIF animations - tres easy to do! Im sure there's heaps more stuff it can do with video, i just haven't leveled up my character enough to get those dungeons of the doco yet.
