Aliens Should Be More Creative

they look like deformed animals
Alright I am not complaining here I am just givign some feedback. The alien models are excellent. Its just that they all look like deformed animals. the Ono looks like a rhino, the gorge looks like a pig, the flying thing looks like a bat, the fade looks like a giant praying mantis. I think it would be cool if most of them werent four or two legged creatures. Maybe one with 3 or 8 legs. give them two heads, or ten eyes. They arent that freaky looking cause they look like animals.

This brings up an idea from an old Half-Life mod called Science and Industry. The melee weapon for your character is.. that's right, a Briefcase. There's an upgrade you can get later in the game that turns the Briefcase into The Briefcase. C4 Briefcase, activate detonator, swing, instant kamikaze. I know this has nothing to do with the current subject, but.. briefcase..

Back on topic : Its still at 1st release and models take time to make. I imagine the Modelers went with 2 or 4 legs because well, have you ever tried to properly work out the dynamics of a 3 or 5 legged creature? Sure, they could look weirder, and thier basic forms can be cast to similar Terran species, however they sure as hell look alien to me!

Side note: Gorge lookin like a pig? Heck no, more like a badger, especialy with that tail.
  • ianskiianski Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7707Members
I think the models are great, you can't expect them to be 6 or 8-legged weirdy things.. cos then they're copying ants and spiders.. right? Everything is alike to everything else, so you'll never escape your argument

ZR2, I don't want to hear another peep out of you until you've written the creators of the Aliens saga and complained because none of their aliens were very orginal. I mean come on! They DID take the general shape of whatever they face-hugged... Be it dogs, humans and now predators aliens...

And don't assume that these models are just "interim" ones that the dev team just threw in before they got round to doing the real things. You will probably offend quite a few of the dev team if you do.

I haven't seen anything wrong at all with the originality or the quality of the current aliens... Nor have I noticed such close resemblances to real animals that I have felt unhappy about it...

Scientifically speaking, anything weighing more than about a pound will benefit from having fewer, more powerful legs as opposed to many. That's why we don't see huge man-sized spiders and ants meandering about Earth. The weight of their body would increase geometrically; the amount that thin legs without internal skeletons can support would not increase nearly as fast.
And in animals with internal skeletons, energy is better spent on large muscle groups moving only a few limbs instead of many muscles moving many legs, wings, etc.

Anyways, what I am trying to say is that if the aliens are trying to fit certain roles in an environment with an atmosphere and gravity similar to Earth's, it makes sense that they would do it in a way much like Earth's animals, who've had millions of years to evolve into ideal forms for their environment.

I see where you're coming from, but there's too things you have to remember:

    1. Evolution selects the best suited to the environment from the available configurations. Often two organisms which developed from different lines end of structurely very similar; it's called convergence. Like fish and dolphins.

    2. It's hard to make realistic-looking non-biped non-quadrapeds. M. Night Shyamalan wanted octopus-like creatures for the aliens in Signs, but the effected people couldn't pull it off.

Excellent point. Though that's one of the reasons we won't see huge arthropods, not why we don't.

Man...back to this again. We had many similar posts back when I first came up with the concepts for these..."Dude, why don't you make them look like the aliens from Aliens, instead, cause those are way cooler and scarier?" or "Why not make them like a giant spider, cause spiders are cool and scary?", etc.

    1. We wanted to give the aliens a distinct and original look, to seperate them from the millions of other movie and game aliens already out there.

    2. If you read up on the back story of the aliens you will find that they come from a jungle like planet, which is what they are adapted for. Hence their look.

    3. We didn't want to make them insectoid. Yes, spiders scare the bajeezus out of me, but soooo many monsters /aliens are already based off that look.

    4. Pretty much everything created for the movies / games has a basis in existing reality. It's what people are familiar with, and can identify with. There has to be an inspiration for everything. Starship troopers? The aliens seemed pretty insectoid to me. The movie Aliens? Most of the weaponry was already existing guns, just with extra little pieces added on. Since we were going for a jungle theme, I did decide to pattern the aliens off of existing creatures to some extent, since it gave me a base to springboard from conceptually, and automatically helps convey their function. Lerk = bat? Damn right. Bats are pretty creepy, IMOP. And you take one look at that guy and you know he can fly, right? Onos = Rhino? Yup. The level 5 alien was supposed to be big, armored, like a tank, used to just charge in and wreck **obscenity** up. Gorge = pig? Um, not sure about that one...wasn't what I was thinking of when I created him.

    5. Flayra wanted to make sure the aliens weren't overly scary, dripping in goo, and evil looking. We wanted to avoid making the aliens seem like the evil bad guys, with the marines in to save the day. We wanted to keep it more ambigious. The aliens are just creatures, following their natural instincts to do what they need to to survive, not out of any malicious intent.

Rammst+ein, you're entitled to your opinion about the aliens. I knew when creating them that there would be people who didn't like that particular look. And I appreciate the fact that, for the most part, your post was fairly respectful. The part I do take issue with is syaing that the "aliens aren't creative". I personally feel that, though they might have some roots in existing earth creatures, they are still pretty darn creative.
