Natural Selection Without Steam

Nex2Nex2 Join Date: 2005-06-24 Member: 54549Members
Sorry if this has been posted before, but im running out of time and i need answer asap.

Im hosting a lan party this weekend, and since the majority of the players do not use steam, we are using the valve hl1 system to play all the mods (cs, tfc, dod ect)

I looked on the NS site, but i cant find a link to the original half life version of the game. Is it even possible?

thanks for the help

    I deleted mine.
I suggest just getting Steam, or lay off the NS.
You should go ask someone in the tech support
forums, I'm sure there is a way to fix it...

Post-2.01 NS won't work without Steam afaik. Either get 2.01 and play that, or just install Steam. It works nowadays.

Yeah, huh, get steam. Really, why not get steam? It works at least as well as WON.

ya, steam isn't that much of a pain to install, and u can just transfer all of your hl games to Steam.

I think the problem here is since these ppl don't use steam they don't have steam accounts so even if they do get it they still can't play.
Afaik, there are no legal ways to get ns3.0 working without steam and hence nobody on this forum can help you.
You'll need to find the install for ns1.0 or ns2.0, it'll be hard but somebody must have forgotten to delete old files.

Hmm... you could transfer your steam over, and keep the login saved, then just sign it in in offline mode....

but that'd be a helluva DVD write to move your ENTIRE Valve folder over...

    this is NOT true.

i have tested ns 3.0 final on the old won system and it works fine. god i wish people wouldnt go by rumors that other people say.

the only bug with running it on the won system, is that when your typing a message, it looks like barcode. but when you send the message, it looks fine.

uhm, theres 2 legal ways. WON and WON2 there is no law that prohibits you running ns 3.0 on the older half-life networking protocal.

    people these days, sheesh..

If they have a legal copy of a Half-Life 1 game, then they have a CD key to create a Steam account. They should be able to find the CD key in their registry if they don't have any other way of finding it (don't remember how, I just remember doing that back when I used WON).

Tell your LAN party friends to stop being so lazy and just create Steam accounts. They can play with or without a net connection. There's no reason to play old games on old network protocol besides saving a nominal amount of time.

Last time I tried, I remember a bug with the popup menu that didn't show up properly, though that didn't stop me. I also heard there was a bug with the commandermode buttons, but I don't remember seeing that.

Just get steam. They'll thank you after that, because it's not by living like hermits on a dead network that'll give them any sort of fun.

<a href='http://www.steamlessproject.nl' target='_blank'>Download all the stuff from here</a> and add it to your sierra installation of half-life. Then install NS to the sierra/half-life directory.

I get no bugs in NS under this system that aren't already in the steam game, and to top it all off, FPS is far better.

well people ... if you dont know anything about a matter or did not even try it: please just dont post. thanks.

    (ontopic)
just copy your steam ns folder over to your won hl installation (or install ns there as stated before) and youre fine (folder structure should be the same as with cs or dod folders)

    have fun <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo-->

everything works except the say and teamsay bars that go across the screen while typing.

i ran a 12 man server not too long ago and got no complaints of bugs, and didnt see any other bugs myself.

and apparently theres still alot of people that play ns on won2, when i had it up, it was a full house for several days straight.

If you can play without steam, you can play with steam. You purchased a copy of Half-Life that grants you access to the account. So long as you still have the CD key its fairly simple to get an account and install steam.

I wouldnt go through the hassle of getting this to run offline for the LAN party. Tell your friends to get an account.

Simple, install steam on all computers. One-by-one, log in and dl your games, setting it for offline mode.

Once thats done, just hook up the lan and get all the comps running steam in offlien mode.

getting steam to run in ofline mode is like trying to get my cat in a cat carrier to goto the vet. its almost impossible. and even if it some how "works" there is always some glitch of not being connected to the master servers that makes the game unstable.

just install won, the 1.1.1.0 update, and the won2 patch from steamlessproject.org and be done with it.

theres also engine differences between won and steam. the way entities act are a bit different, and on won they seem to behave better (func_rotating, trigger_push, target_camera) remember the "touch someone on the bast rotating door" instant kill? thats a problem with steam.
  • Viper_two_nine_AViper_two_nine_A Join Date: 2004-09-29 Member: 31989Members
well imho the "hassle" of getting ns to run with won is much smaller then a steam installation on every pc ...
once you got your folders copied the right way you just need to copy the whole hl folder for an "installation" on the other clients

It's funny because I manage to get steam offline all the time, however I remember the WON menu bug (it was 2.01 I think, so it might have changed since then)

edit: and the menu bug was at a lan, and everyone had it.

aye i must agree won is still far simpler, easier and quicker to setup for everyone for lan gaming.

Because people hate confronting change and still think it's hip to stay with won because Steam had a horrible debut (just like WON had a horrible start, but no-one remembers)

The difference is, steam continues to be horrible, eveery update brings a new problem, and every update seems to push your hardware harder, until it cant even run half-life at a stable framerate anymore... whats the deal with that?

Ofcourse, valve wont see anyproblems with thier software, as it saves them money, aswell as charging over the RRP on the games you buy on it.

I even tried my half-life 2 without steam, extracted the GCF files, and yes, it runs smoother and load times are faster.

Change is good, for the better, this change was, and still is, for the worse.
