Stop using so many preshaped objects and learn poly-by-poly modelling fast.

This model looks like glued together primitives with load of smoothing errors, clipping...

its actually not HARD to make a good model in milk shape,, i know many people who make GREAT models in it with out it being HARD.

DrFuzzy we should make a site, like a teaching site for newbs so that may be able to get this forums IQ past mine which is umm , well in 7th grade it was 131, idk what it is now...

There are better modellers that are free out there...

wings 3d + blender come to mind...

They're both quite capable, but wings 3d confuses me much less. Unfortunately it also only allows for box modelling... which isn't my personal preference.

it really is not hard to use ms3d once you get the hang of it. try to stay away from using the basic primitives too much, so if you do use the primitives try moving around the verticies a bit.

I suppose you could try G-Max, but it will probably confuse you quite a bit cause there are loads more features and options.

Theres also Maya Personal Learning Edition available
  • NEX9NEX9 Join Date: 2005-03-08 Member: 44299Members
poly by poly is the way to go, you will do fine in milk shape, start off smaller tho, and try not to use primatives, primatives are stock standard shaps and building blocks, only use primatives unless your going to seriously distort them, and cut away from them and add to them, other wise if you do use primatives your work will always walk away with a lego look

try hammer its a hl lvl editor, its essentaly the same thing but you cant make weapons modles and men, unless i guess ya get a converter, if one exsists *shrugs*

Alias Maya - Personal Learning Edition
    discreet - Gmax

isn't there a free Softimage|XSI version for games aswell ??

ms3d sucks, period. There are much better applications around which are still free to use; and if you hadn't noticed ms3d is only a 30 day trial, you have to pay to register, unless youre hacking your registry, in which case you just defeated your own point.

:\ it's not hard, just keep at it, look at some tutorials and don't just slap a few horribly smoothed cylinders together and tell us it's a new model.

Shut up, seriously, don't knock something just because you don't like it. MS3d for one is only 25 USD, so unless you're a cheapskate it's worth the price. Not to mention it is a very decent modelling tool, great for what it's made for. Granted there are better alternatives, but it's still decent. Hell look at my models, 8/10ths of them came from milkshape and they're not horrible.

I think the one who wrote that MS3D sucks should apologize for being such an idiot. Dont be prejudice to something you arent good enough to use nor intelligent enough to even understand. MS3D (Milkshape 3D) is a brilliant modeling program, it has everything you need, im a simple form.
It only lacks some advanced things, but those can be accomplished through enough experience and knowledge of modeling.
