i searched for a thread like this but none could be found

so, me and an old friend (who has quit NS for steam-related reasons) were talking about gaming today and our conversations lead to good'ol NS 2.01. Among some of the things we talked about was our first times playing NS.

I remember my first game clearly; I spawned into the ready room on ns_Bast and joined the marine team as he had instructed me too(this guy introduced me to NS). This was my first PC FPS aside from DOOM, and i was completely blown away at MS and having actual people controling the marines walking around me. so, soon i head out of the base and no sooner did i go down that elevator did i see my first alien; the gorge. This being my first time playing with a mouse and keyboard, i couldn't hit the lil fatty to save my life, and got owned horribly! So, for like 3 min after spawning in i just sat at the top of MS stairing down the elevator shaft waiting for it to pop out, which it didn't, it was killed long ago. After being yelled at i leave base, get pwnt by ambushing skulk, and respawn. The comm drops me a welder, which i mistook as some new uber-gun. So i immediately rush back to the skulk, welder in hand, and die without phasing the skulk at all. for the rest of the game i baisically ran around aimlessly getting TWO[U] kills, i personally was proud of those 2 kills! =D

Since then i've been hooke on NS and haven't gone more than 3 days without playing aside from when i moved =D

I played NS when it was 1.04.

I don't remember my first game, but I remember studying the manual for like 2 hours before playing the game. One particularly memorable game was NS_Bast, on of my firsts, the commander had relocated us to Maintence after our base suffered too much damage. We held there for 3 straight hours, surviving on only one RT. Comm dropped armories for cover to duck behind from acid rockets, HAs were in charge of welding the base, and Light Armors had to organize "pushes" to destory chambers and retreating aliens.

It looked pretty spectacular, we huddled behind the armories until the signal sounded. At that time, me and my buddies rushed head first into an Onos and accompanying Fades. Half of us were killed immediately, the ones left alive managed to empty their guns into the Onos, bringing him down quite nicely. Moments after, we were shredded by a small group of Fades...Soon I got an HA and welder. My new job was to keep the armories and other HAs at top condition. Being able to stand the spores the lerks constantly shot out, all we had to do was make sure our cover wasn't destroyed.

We actually won, we got the most points some how and the server timer ran out.

Then I started playing and getting better about 3 months later.

I remember 1.03 and the biggest console command then was "stopcommandermode", not "brightness 1000".

I don't remember my first game I think it was Bast in 1.00, I was marine, everyone was "now what....", this guy hopped in the chair, and was also.. "now what..."
He dropped random buildings, and we built them. I then proceeded to go through the revolving door, only to face a terrified alien who walked around everywhere chomping everywhere (except on me)
I was also terrified and I was shooting everywhere except on the alien. I eventually died.
Random walking around and random encounters later, a huge cow was going up on the elevator and the whole marine base was freaked out. Then that huge cow complained it was stuck in the elevator.

After all that happened, we finished by losing

meh,i tried NS for the first time about 2 years ago, maybe more.
i remember it being one of the first versions
and ofcourse the first map i ever played was ns_bast!

ahhhhh..the times when Fades had bilebomb and teleport, and untiresomely got stuck in the walls.
but it was enjoyable, then i sorta forgot about it,there werent that many servers, and noone played it :<
untill a friend reminded me about NS last year..
so back i was..
and in the meantime,so many changes were made,i had to learn the game all over again!

[/end of fairytale] xD

hmm...first expirience...i think it was around 1.04 I can't remember the map, but i think it was either hera, bast or tanith...anyways, the map had just started, and i joined aliens.

Most of the time i was just looking around, asking help from fellow players
and dying..

Well, it took SOME time untill i got enough res to go lerk and to find a way to evovle lerk..

and..after i got the lerk..i died to first marine i met, after that..i left the game.

--
Well, it didnt take long from me to rejoin the game x)

Can't remember my first experience with NS, I started, then stopped for ages.

But I can remember my most exhilarating one though...

ns_eclipse, turtled in MS, with WoL's everywhere, having been trapped there for ages, but not really hammered, we were more under siege than being attacked.
Me (the nub at the time) called for a GL to see if I could clear the lame from skylights. I got given it, and the rest of the squad was given a protect waypoint, on me. After giving the armoury some wub, and stocking up on the ever-so important grenades, we decided that a small lull in the proceedings was the ideal time to strike.

Me and 4 others ran stright towards skylights, and I spammed the room, clearing a lot of the lame within seconds, actually killing a gorge, and scrambling an egg.

A few moments later, we got rushed by 2 fades. The rest of the squad tore them apart with lvl3 shotguns. Med'd up, and restocked, we then pushed all the way to one of the hives, leaving a trail of dead aliens in our wake. One hive went down to my constant grenading, and I only got hit twice, thanks to the immense backup I had.

That was the most exhilarating experience I have ever had with NS, nothing has come close since, with the exception of a game on the Korps server, about a week ago. It's surprising how co-ordinated an attack you can muster when people actually listen to what you are saying. Needless to say, it was a total raping of 2 hives at the same time...

My first time at comm.
Version: 1.04
map: misselcommand

I knew exactly what to drop, where to drop, and in what order. I thought I was so leet. My marines kept asking me to get upgrades. I said I dropped the armslab an hour ago, you should be getting upgrades. Over and over again they yelled at me to get them. I just assumed the upgrades came automaticly once it was built. I had no idea I had to click on each one seperatly.

Ofcourse that wasn't as bad as the time I tried humping the protolab trying to get a jp.

I think I played 1.04 for 10 minutes and never left the hive, then I played 2.0 and managed to get to the res node in the hive. Eventually I got out, baby steps.

I was a 3b newbie. I joined a server on ns_veil, back when it still had the big platform at the back. It was basically endgame and the comm was just handing out guns and jetpacks on the platform, knowing that any onos that tried to get up there would be trapped. I ended up flying around like a madman and knifing at an onos like an idiot.

The first thing i remember about playing ns 1.04 was when i went comm like all newbs do, and just put loads of turrets in base and some sieges which are upgraded and better turrets right, i just didn't understand why they didnt fire at the aliens!

I also remember going around as marine with Verty in 1.04 on our old knife sessions, 1 pistol shot at the skulk only each, then knife, good times.

I can't remember the details of my first game, but it was 3. something beta. Having actually read the manual ahead of time, I actually managed to hide my status as a newbie for the most of the game. My most memorable early game was a platform relocate on hera, where I learned how fun juggling onos off the edge was I miss knife knockback... but I realize just how messed up it was, despite how fun it was.

When I first joined I went aliens and couldn't figure out how to use my res till I had enough for onos. So I saw onos was the most expensive alien so I went onos. Everyone started yelling at me. I then attacked marine spawn and killed a marine then got slaughtered.

After I died my team verbally abused me like nothing I've experienced before.

I have THE BEST story of anybody, and I swear I'm not lying, though I forget what server it was. It was 2.01 on ns_veil, I was aliens on the sub-sector hive. I went a smooth 2/6, then suddenly the other two hives go up instantly to full health. People on both teams are screaming CHEATER, CHEATER! but nobody can figure out who it is. We absolutely obliterate them since we have three hives within like 6 minutes. The next round starts, map doesn't change, and almost as soon as the beeping for the round start ends, again comes "Your hive is complete.", and we have all three hives. I proceed to get a 7 kill xeno at marine start, followed by a 4 kill one (I'd watched my brother play the game before and had seen him xeno all the time, since he loved to). Suddenly, I am prime candidate for Mr. Hive Hax, as some $##%^%$^T named "Lightbulb" points his finger at me. He eventually convinces the entire server who I'm pleading with, but what the heck can I honestly say? I leave the server to change my name and re-enter so I can play without being witch hunted, and I re-enter on a new game in which the hive thing doesn't happen (whoever was doing it stopped it to have everyone believe Splinter Steve was their culprit). Another game starts, I think after a map switch to tanith, where Lightbulb discovers my steam ID in "status" which he had written down himself. He of course tells the entire server (and threatens to have everyone from my "clan" banned even though I made up a clan tag when I re-enterred). Suddenly, all three hives go up again, although this time I'm on marines. Then comes even more flaming against me. I didn't take it personally because I'm a former admin myself and I knew someone was toying with me and calculating every part of it. An admin comes, and I get banned temporarily.

Did I mention my rich love for this community? <3

Halloween night when 1.0 was just released (or did it come out the day after?) Any who, I joined the server that I could find with most players and the lowest ping, which was at the time around 250 for everyone due to the extremely hi CPU strain put on the servers. The map was ns_eclipse and I joined aliens first (I was one of the people who was looking for more toward alien side than marines) and my resource bar instantly shot up to 100. Obviously aliens were winning, which for 1.0 was quite a feat, but then again everyone was new and I doubt the marines had a clue what to do. I instantly started to gestate into an Onos, or a lvl 5 for whoever remembers, and then trotted out of maintenance hive with charge ready to go. I ran straight into a group of 7 or so marines that were running single file through southloop (they must have been following one of the ns guides or ns trainers or whatever the learning program was when it was first released) and I freaked out and started charging them. Needless to say I somehow got 7 kills in a row from the charge and the next text to pop up were about 3 "WTH"s and 4 "OMG", mostly because nobody had even seen an Onos at that point.

My first time playing marine side I was looking forward the command chair more than anything and with some luck I was the first one to find it on ns_caged. It took me about a minute and a half to figure out that I had to drop an infantry portal first before I could drop anything else, and then the game went smoothly from there (I can't remember if we won or lost though.

My first game was the very first release day of good ol' 1.0. Thousand pings for everyone (except for me and my buddies - we were hosting our own server at a LAN center); so much marine res than you could literally cover all of bast in structures and make the whole map your base; and armies of nubs that didn't know a damn thing about the game because they hadn't read the manual. Before the exploits, before the clans (well, mostly), before co_, before Forlorn, before constellation, before the vets, before crouch fades, before bunnyhopping, even before the jetpack rush, there was only a game and a legion of new fans clamoring to learn it.

I downloaded NS during B4 periods but I had a **** computer then so I couldn't get OpenGL to work. Anyways I started my own game on co_faceoff (I recently watched the movie Faceoff and was interested) and everything was black except for the green doors saying join marines/aliens/spectate/random and thought: this is flipping cool. I got the 'NS does not support Software mode' message, so I uninstalled.

When I got my new computer and got the same thing, I thought that this isn't possible, so I went to download drivers for my card (integrated)..After I got it to work I joined a server that was on co_kestrel. It was one of those big co_ 32 man servers. I got owned over and over again and kept hearing all the bullets and 'hive/lifeforms under attack' getting kills few and far between. I had no idea what I was doing but ever since then I've had the best time of my life since quitting CS

NS 1.0, following the pre-release news on PHL for 3 months prior, I was anxious to play the game. I forgoed any manuals instructions etc, did a quick config setup, and jumped into one of the (at the time) 12 servers. I remember it as clear as day: The map was ns_nothing, I joined aliens, due to all the CS nubs stacking marines. I spent a good 5-10 minutes of my first time playing running around in the giant Cargo-Via loop, which, as of current, is no longer there, but back in ns_nothing 1.0, cargo and via hive were connected with an almost continous loop. Finally, I randomly took a left instead of a right, and was overjoyed to finally discover new parts of the map... and *gasp* my first enemy! I had made it all the way to outside of marine start. I was finally ready to see what aliens were all about. He popped out, I ran at him biting and jumping from across the room, he popped me in less than 3 seconds... I was **** as hell. Here I had spent, 5 friggin minutes figuring out how to get to marine start, only to die in less than 5 seconds, and start back at the beginning.
As the game progressed, the marines holed up in viaduct, and our gorges built OCs at the top of viaduct, trapping them in. This is where I learned what parasite actually did, as I parasited the marines below me in via. After seeing it did little damage, I decided to go full throttle again, and once again, I died almost instantly. Frustated again, I checked the scoreboards (while I was dead) to see if others were having the same killing problems I were... but that was not the case. There were many players with 10+ kills, and beside there name were different classes: I saw the highest player as "ONOS", two other players as "FADE", and most others as "SKUL", but when I got to my name, I saw "REIN", and suddenly I knew why I couldn't kill anything... this "REIN" class must suck ****. And, of course, thats when I asked in public chat:
"Why can i never be a SKUL or ONOS, why am I always a REIN!!??"
Luckily... I soon figured that one out

My first game was on bast or nancy i cant quite remember, I think it was 1.03 at the time, could of been 1.02 though. I dont really remember much, but it took me weeks to learn the game.

One amusing game (which I want to apologise for now ), it was on tanith and I went gorge in sat comms, not quite knowing what the gorge did, and I only knew how to build offence chambers at the time. So I spent ages laming up sat comms (while the team had to have a second gorge to actually do useful stuff), in 1.0 this of course wasted all the res .

We lost the game, and I eventually realised it had been my fault, so yeah to everyone in that game on the aliens side im very very very sorry.

It was a Friday night as I remember: I had just been getting into mods. There I was looking around on FilePlanet when I saw Natural Selection. DIdn't think much of it, so I downloaded.

20 mins later I had NS 2.01 on my computer. I watched the quick slideshow, and was blown away at the detail of the game. Before I knew it I was playing as marine on ns_bast.

I remember my first day.. I went alien my first game and got owned to a degree I thought not feasable, or comprehendable to any logic or reasoning. I went lerk eventually, sat on the cliff with adrenaline in ns_hera, and spiked the marines rt dead, and kept killing the rines that tried to build it. This was back in 1.04, it was pretty damn funny.. Then they got a JP and HMG'd me.. In that same game a lone marie with a jp and hmg took down 2 hives before being killed... I also remember a few games after that HATING fade, because no matter what I did, I always, ALWAYS got stuck in something. Oh, and shotgun was pimp. Good times. =]
