Edit: the x700 and x600 series are also quite good and are slightly cheaper than the x800s
can you run agp8x? if you can a 6600gt or a 9800pro can be good
/edit and underdog i take it your talking about this one?
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102530' target='_blank'>http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102530</a>
will this give me a big performance boost over my ti 4600?
and yes, it is backwards compatable
In summary, it is compatible; it will definitely improve performance, thought not as much as if you have an 8x board.
A new motherboard should definitely be on your list of near future purchases however, 4x will probably soon not even be supported on high end video cards.
That is the 6800 by eVGA. It is $189.00
12 pipelines
325 Mhz Core
700 Mhz Memory Clock DDR
AGP 8x/4x
256 bit memory interface
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102530' target='_blank'>X800 by ATI</a>
That is the X800 by Sapphire. It is $237
12 pipelines
392 Mhz Core
700 Mhz Memory Clock DDR
AGP 8x/4x
256 bit memory interface
One thing though, can you take a look at your AGP slot and describe it? AGP slots come in 3 different styles. A universal which has no notches, specific to AGP 2x/early 4x. Or is the notch towards the front of the case? (Specific to some AGP 8x/4x slots) I forget what the third style is, been too long since I have worked with it. But, if it looks like the slots I just described, this card will work fine with it.
For the cards above, these should be well within your price range, your "Bang For Buck" cards. But, if you can manage to save up some money, here are the $300 range options.
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814108137' target='_blank'>ProLink 6800GT</a>
6800 GT by Prolink. At $293.00

<a href='http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102520' target='_blank'>X800XL by Sapphire</a>
X800XL by Sapphire. At $313.00
16 pipelines
400 Mhz Core
980 Mhz Memory Clock GDDR3
AGP 8x/4x

I would personally recommend the 6800 if you choose the $200 range. If you save for the $300 range, the X800XL is an excellent choice. I have an X800XL by ATI and I couldn't be happier with it.
And since I don't know what type of motherboard you use, I will find an AGP 8x board for both Intel and AMD platforms. And if it is a socket 423....................I might have a socket 478 P4 for you.
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130475' target='_blank'>K7N2-Delta 2</a>

AGP 8x Support
DDR 400/333/266/200 support max of 2GB

And finally, in the event you have a socket 423 P4 let me find a board for you. And if you have an AGP 4x P3 board, I will tell you right now, upgrade.
EDIT:Stupid me, I forgot that Socket 423 P4's don't support AGP 8x. :-P
So if you have a socket 423 or socket 370, here is an interesting bundle deal on Tiger Direct.
<a href='http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1166612&Sku=MBM-7NJL6-XP2900' target='_blank'>ChainTech/2900+ bundle</a>

5 PCI slots
6 channel on board audio
This neat bundle also comes with a AMD Athlon 2900+XP
512 KB L2 Cache
400 Mhz FSB

I got an x800 XT when they were $500, and now they're less then $350. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I know how you feel when I ordered the computer I currently have I knew that the Athlon 64's were pending to be released. I waited as long as I could but I had to order it soon so I would get it around the time school started. I ordered a nice Athlon Xp 3000+, and about 3 days later the 64's were out. Gotta love that timing.
For one the increased pipelines will allow greater performance per cycle. In lamen's terms, higher fps. The higher speed GDDR3 memory will also allow greater deals of memory bandwith than the X800 could ever have. Also in HL2 my X800XL gets an average of 80-90 fps.
This beauty can run BF2 with everything on high 1024x768 with no problems.
I turn the shadows off and the lighting quality down because I really don't notice the loss and it helps things go smoother I suppose.
It's an "older" card but I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.
I need someone to go <a href='http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/products/a851x1y0z1p1s0n0m0' target='_blank'>here</a> and explain to me what the difference between the X800s there is. There are about 7 different X800s between £150-£300 in price.
Being nub as I am, I have no idea whether "pro" or "XT" is better (although i'm pretty sure it's XT), and even if I did i'd have no idea HOW MUCH difference it makes.
I also have no idea what "256bit VIVO DVI" and "AGP8x DV TV out" mean (except for the AGP8x part).... anyone care to enlighten me?
Just to clarify
There are 2 base level X800's
128 MB and 256 MB
Both Use DDR memory at 700 Mhz
Both Use 12 pipelines
Both have a core clock of 392 Mhz
X800SE
256 MB DDR @ 800 Mhz
12 pipelines
425 Mhz Core Clock
256 bit memory interface
X800 Pro
256 MB GDDR3 @ 900Mhz
12 Pipelines
475 Mhz Core Clock
256 bit memory interface
X800XL
256 and 512 MB GDDR3 @ 980 Mhz
16 pipelines
400 Mhz Core Clock
256 bit memory interface
X800XT
256 MB GDDR3 @ 1000 Mhz
16 pipelines
500 Mhz Core Clock
256 bit memory interface
X800XTPE
256 MB GDDR3 @ 1120 Mhz
16 pipelines
520 Mhz Core Clock
256 bit memory interface
If you are looking for the best performance possible, go for the X800XTPE. If you are looking for a bang for your buck card, then the X800XL is your next best choice. The price difference between the X800Pro and X800XL is so mininal, it is worth it to go to the XL.

You summed that up brilliantly. Thank you <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Oh, another question which you guys may or may not be able to answer, are graphics cards due to drop in price any time soon? I know the best you can do is speculate, but have they dropped recently for example? My plan is to get an X800 next time they drop in price.

Just curious - what are the rest of your specs? I have to run BF2 at medium-low, and stick to servers with ~32 players with my Rad. 9800Pro. If you have a better processor than a 2.2 GHz or more than 1 gig of RAM, then fair enough.
2 gigs of RAM and a 3.0 with ultrahyperthreading or whatever they call it.
You can never have enough RAM.

The NV70 core and R520 core are slated to be released within the quarter. So I would say yes.
Keep in mind that flagship cards don't drop in price that much. I.E, the x800 may end up more expensive than a higher performing mid-range card in the future. Take a look at the 9800 pro, now it is slightly cheaper than the x700 pro (used to still be more expensive) but the x700 is vastly performance superior.
And deathknight said it well, the only reason anyone would pick an x800 pro over an x800XL is overclocking potential. Running a larger sized core it puts out more heat, but the 90nm tech is not yet good enough to compete with the 130nm tech's overclocking possibilities. Plus some x800 pros have the extra 4 pipes unlockable, a treasure trove for hardcore overclockers, not even noticed by most users (including most gamers).
I'm thinking of splashing out on a X800XTPE. However, PC Gamer has reviewed an X850XTPE - is the price difference worth it? Also, is there a huge difference between the top line ATI and nVidia cards? Will some games work better than others on the cards?
On another note, how can I find out how much RAM I can upgrade to? On my mum's computer, we hit a limit of 1 gig. Is there any way to find out <i>before</i> I buy a stick of memory?
