Think.
Ok get this, the marines spaceship has crashed onto the alien planet and was at such a high speed its stuck 2 miles under the ground, they are stuck in a series of alien caverns and must find a way out and get off the icy planet.

Keep in mind though, that the main objective for the marines in NS version 1, will be finding the active hives as they come online, and destroying them... not escaping an installation. I think some additional programming would be required for extra scenarios.
I don't think there is any set rule or anything (or is there?), but creating the basic marine/alien/hive scenario is probably the best thing to do at the current time.
My dropship is like that (pending clarification on that issue)
I think the spaceship should be large... not just a dropship, but a cargoship, and it should be 90% intact, just heavily burned through the athmosphere, broken at some places. I think if you make the map as i see it in my mind now, it can be a very good map...
Seriously, maybe the (strongly-shielded) ship hit ground just above some cave system of some sorts so it naturally just continued through the very thing layer of 'earth' filling the main cave. Hmm, if you let the marines go outside of the ship you could let them wonder of in large cavesystems. Yeah, put the hive(s) outside of the ship.
Something that would be very cool, but maybe not good to map is to tilt the whole ship, maybe only just slightly, but enough to make it feel like it has crashed.
*** Kassinger thinks back to some very fun Jedi Knight gameplay in a level where a spaceship was about to crash into a planet, and everything was tilted heavily.
Did the aliens prepare a command center for the tunnels if marines would crash there?
btw make a piece of the ship go straight down from one tunnel, thru the floor and into another. that could look awsome. all the everyday-ship-life-stuff in there lying in the cockpit. (if thats censured i must have misspelled)
And a small window to crawl out of.
I was just joking when I said it had to be made of ice cream (glas or summin' in swedish, right?) so the ship would have a soft landing. And you might have noticed I wrote seriously after that.
The commanders console would be in the ship, and with some elite scanning devices it would be able to see all the caves.
Hmm... now there's an idea... Hehe
I really like your idea of having caves to move through, and parts of the ship here and there with the resource nozzles in them. Sweetness.
I imagine this could get a bit tricky to build though... making it look good in the commander mode and everything...
The Marines can see the sky, but the bulk of the ship prevents them from going out that way..
The resource node is in a spot where the marines would have to swim under water for a Looong time, getting through with (in my case) about 15 hp.
Hmm, forcing people to lose health points to reach a resource node seems drastic, though I guess you can do it. *shrugs*
I would really like to see such a map with caves + ship parts if done well. And Flarya probably wouldn't have anything against it if it doesn't have outdoor areas, and if the caves sorta gave you the same feeling as walking in the hallways of other (official) ns maps.
Though I guess the mapper would have to solve some commanders issues, like commander console placement, a way to explain how the commander can see into the caves (scanning device?) and stuff.
I imagine that such a level would remind you of going in a ant farm, seeing lots of alien stuff. A challenge would be to detail the caves so they are just as exiting to walk through as actual hallways. You wouldn't want to end up going through lots of tunnels with just a single texture and little variation.
They don't have to be 3 foot by 4 foot tunnels... Just think along the lines of natural and rocky/bumpy hallways...
I really don't see why this would cause a problem for the commander, as opposed to the standard fare.

so this is on some rocky planet (stones and stuff) and therre is the alien base wich is a crashed spaceship, all infested and dirty. then there is the marine base in the other end wich is the resque spacecraft to find out what happened. between the spaceships there is a large cavernsystem that is easy to get lost in. in the middle of the cavesystem there is a tiny supply-depode with a rescorse point. there would be also a rescorse points near the spaceships. so most of the action is in those dark wet caves, fighting for the extra resc-point. just an idea, maybe a bad 1, dont know cause i dont have any about mapping
If you ever get the chance play it, i get alot of inspiration from that game.
May help some people who are stuck for ideas for a map just pick up a sci-fi game and play away and get some ideas from it. e.g AvP 2 , timesplitters, serious sam, system shock 2 etc.
