Anyone that complains about shooting or killing or anything combat related in SC:CT just sucks at the game. If I decide to... <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Me: Hey, Stealth, buddy - how's it hangin'? Stealh: Narf! Hey old pal, long time no see, eh? Me: Yeah, yeah, I've been wanting to talk to you about something. Stealth: Sure, anything for you, man. Me: <b>SHOTGUN TO THE FACE!</b> *splat* Stealth: D:<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> ...I can finish most of the levels in a few minutes. Seriously, that game is <i>so</i> easy if you just ignore all the optional objectives and stealth - 100% ratings are for pansies, anyway. I mean, come on! You have an assault rifle, an assault shotgun, a 20mm "Where'd my torso go?", <b>wallmines</b>, and more grenades than I usually know what to do with. And sucking at hand to hand? <i>Puh-leeze.</i> Most of the enemies are slow enough that you can run up, grab one from behind, shoot his buddy in the face - y'know, the one he was just having a conversation with - and then snap the back of the first before the AI even recognizes your existence. On the off-chance that someone turns around before you can sneak up on them, guess what? YOU CAN SHANK THEM ANYWAY! And in the even more improbable case that someone actually shoots you, every level is filled with enough medical provisions to supply all the hospitals in Iraq for the next decade.
Just don't try any of that on the XBOX. Those poor bastards get forced into a stealth game with a junky control layout and no aiming ability whatsoever. Believe me, I've tried being as gun-ho on the XBOX as I am on the PC, and it just doesn't work.
And yeah, it is kinda fun to be stealthy every once in a while. Maybe you should do that the first time you play it. Maybe. But if you ever go full assault, chances are high that you'll never look back.
Note: Hmm, I just realized that this post has no place in the context of this thread. Oh well.

The moment you've all been waiting for has arrived: My post.
Okay, maybe not, but I am the resident Metal Gear fanatic, so I gotta perform my duties. :P
Metal Gear Solid's control scheme is very different from Splinter Cell's. The control scheme can be quite complex, but this just means you have a very large variety of moves for each situation. In fact, you have so many that most people who play the game won't even come up with them, perhaps because no other game let you do it and thus they just don't expect it, or whatnot.
The controls are also very crisp and very responsive. If you haven't logged in a few hundred hours with the series you're probably going "hey, wait a minute..." at that last sentance, but believe me its true. It only feels like its wishy-washy because you're not used to it, and so you do things like shoot someone in the back when you mean to just lower your pistol, or vice versa.
Also, one thing you should note about the metal gear series when comparing them to other series, is that they aren't going for realism at all. They are going for a movie feel. I prefer the movie feel to the 'OMG REALISM' of splinter cell. Of course neither of them are very realistic at all, but that's a whole other issue.
Anyways, on to specific issues:
<!--QuoteBegin-Marik Steele+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Marik Steele)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The controls feel so different. Going up to a wall may automatically put my back to it...or not. Sometimes I'll get away from back-to-wall when I don't mean to. And who knows what directions mean what when my back is to the wall.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> You can put your back to almost any wall in the game. Just push in the direction to. To stay pushed against it, keep holding that direction. To stop leaning against the wall, stop pushing that direction. Simple. Remember, direction is always relevant to camera, NOT the direction Snake is facing. If you're leaned against a north wall that runs east to west on the screen, and you want to go left, just push up on the analog pad to lean against the wall, then up-left-ish to move left. Simple.
<!--QuoteBegin-Marik Steele+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Marik Steele)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Grabbing a guy from behind may grab him by the neck....or might flip him flat on his back, ready to stand up -- sometimes ungrabbable the whole way -- to shoot me again.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> In MGS1/2, to put someone in a choke hold you gotta push the square button while NOT pushing a direction on the analog pad. Just let go of whatever direction you're running a split second before you get ready to choke. Pushing square while holding a direction means you want to flip them, which honestly is only useful in a few situations, and then only when you're good at hold-ups.
<!--QuoteBegin-Marik Steele+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Marik Steele)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I can't aim with the ps2 controller worth junk, and the moment I lessen pressure on first-person-view slightly, there goes all my work of aiming. To make matters worse, I can't sidestep left or right around the cover I'm trying to use, because half the time I try, I end up doing something crazy with the left/right equip slots, like unequipping the gun I'm aiming.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Either you're not pushing the buttons firmly, or you got a bad controller that isn't detecting the button presses right. You can't strafe while in FPS mode, but you can 'peek' around a corner by holding L2/R2. Holding both together makes you stand on your tip-toes to see a bit over an obstacle. This can be a very powerful technique once mastered. In fact, its very much needed to beat Olga on the hardest difficulty when she can kill you in like 3 hits.
<!--QuoteBegin-Marik Steele+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Marik Steele)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Am I royally missing something like a lock-on feature? Or have I set the controls improperly? Or is setting the difficulty to Normal on my first play simply being overconfident?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Yes, you are. L1 is a lock-on button. However it only works when you're pointing the general direction of the person in MGS1/2, meaning you can't circle around them while keeping aim on them like you can in MGS3.
<!--QuoteBegin-Nemesis Zero+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Nemesis Zero)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->What I want to do when picking the controller up is play, and there's precious little opportunity for that in the product.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->MGS2 can be a bit bad like that. In response to critism in this area, MGS3 is a lot more sparse in between cutscenes, although not so much in the openin part of the game where they are setting up the plot and stuff.
<!--QuoteBegin-TommyVercetti+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (TommyVercetti)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->At first, I didn't like the controls at all and they were very difficult to use<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> X-Box controls for MGS2 are complete crap. A lot of moves in the game simply cannot be done because the x-box controller doesn't have analog buttons for the XYAB and White and Black buttons.

If you liked it, I highly recommend you find Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (old MSX2 game), as its very similar. This is the game where Snake goes to Zanzibar.
<!--QuoteBegin-BadKarma+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (BadKarma)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> CQC in MGS3 was infinitly badass. Those moves weren't invented until I think the late 80's early 90's, or something. Either way it was well before the timeline of the game. It was just an artistic liberty they took. Not that I mind, CQC pwns. :P
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Oh yea, and if you're holding up a gaurd and he gets lippy and won't give you anything, give him one to the kneecap, he'll reconsider his options.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Indeed. You can also pop them in the hand. Or if you're feeling really evil, you can then shoot out their radio, and simply leave. They'll be confused for a minute, then they'll try to run off. Of course the swift release of death will come before they make it to an ally... >:D
<!--QuoteBegin-AlienCow+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (AlienCow)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I found MGS2 extremely hard to get to grips with on the PC. The PC version of MGS2 is one of the worst ports I've ever seen. To really play it right, you need to get a PS2 knockoff controller (w/ analog!). The good news is you can get those for $10 at Wal-Mart.

I think the lights are a gameplay element that allows you to see yourself. Solid Snake could take ten Navy SEALs blindfolded, with his hands tied behind his back, while sleeping. It is interesting to note that Snake does not need to sneak around, he merely does it because he is part ninja.

Don't forget it's a video game, completely unrealistic by anyone's standards (and espsecially Red Storm's, cuz they pwn the everliving s*** out of the new Tom Clancy devs). Oh yea, and the mercs in that game have some crippling disease that keeps them from turning at anything more than 1 degree per second. Oh, and their goggles make everything friggin' invisible except for their targets. A god damn bus with no muffler or tires and screeching monkeys in all the windows could sneak up on a merc from Chaoes Theory.
It doesn't work. Your Navy Seal would get noticed and capped. SEALs, like <b><u><i>all</b></u></i> real soldiers (and no, I am not including terrorists) rely on TEAMWORK. Sam's team is sitting at home watching him on Satellite TV. The funny thing is, if the laws of the game world applied, people would still notice him and he couldn't do anything while they were slowly rotating to face him because his 5-7 apparently fires blanks.
.. I always wanted to try a sneaky around vs merc kind of multiplayer game. Specifically one for HL.. or, even better, HL2.

Stealth isn't some fantasy trick hollywood made up. It's something that exists and is used. I never meant to say that it's plausible to go around twisting necks shooting out lights and hiding dead bodies in lockers to complete fantasy government missions. But I am saying that it is possible to be close to someone and undetected and that it's a tactic used by our military today for infiltration.

After a little over 15 hours (including all cutscenes) I'm done. The ending was long, yes, but at least it wasn't *quite* as stupid as some people made it sound. I was half expecting the ending to involve Raiden running away from a Metal Gear in nothing more than underwear, followed by "THE END!" I'm rather glad I got to play with a ps2 controller instead of keyboard/mouse. I'm also very glad I put in the time to read about the first game, because it helped a lot for understanding this one.
It was good enough that now I have much more respect for the series, but still not enough to convince me that I should go out and buy a console, much less play MGS3. I guess that's another port to wait for.

They don't even hold a candle to the super dual bladed chainsaw badasses in the waterworld mercenary level in the mini-game. The bosses all had weaknesses. The chainsaw guys on that level were pure pwnage inside a burlap sack. If you played as hunk... you had no hard hitting weapons to slow those bastards down. Nothing says "Game Over" more then chucking 4 grenades at one guy and crying because you have nothing left but a gun that will tickle the rushing maniac. whats that? Run away? Then you might get the wonderful TWO chainsaw asshats situation. You'll spend the rest of the time left running away from them if they rush you at the same time. Now with the wesker loadout... at least you have a chance if you know what you're doing.
Bosses aside... running through the game (on the hardest setting mind you) was a blast. placing your shots accurately and timing it just right so you can roundhouse kick a rushing mass of infected islanders. Its a shame that there wasn't more "survival" in the game. You had bad **** weapons at your disposal. to bad there wasn't one sequence when *gasp* not ashley but LEON gets captured. Of course leon is such a bad **** he'd break out... grab his knife... and proceed to cut his way back to his firearms.
I also missed the teeming masses of the patented "Zerg Rush" .
The cabin scene with the latino guy (forgot his name... been a while since i borrowed my roommates gamecube) was verrrrrrry close to what i had in mind. Back to the wall... no where to run. It seemed everytime the game put you in this type of situation... the bad guys... left? WTH? Keep the presure up! I was just starting to break a sweat!
They should have added more end game content. Something that even with the Tommy gun would have been challenging. Think gladiator except with chainsaws and guns. I know i know... sounds like I'm asking alot when you consider the other stuff (the ada mission seems so tacked on and lame... I'd rather have what i described).

Oh well.

And who knows what directions mean what when my back is to the wall.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
You can put your back to almost any wall in the game. Simple.
<!--QuoteBegin-Marik Steele+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Marik Steele)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Grabbing a guy from behind may grab him by the neck....or might flip him flat on his back, ready to stand up -- sometimes ungrabbable the whole way -- to shoot me again.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
In MGS1/2, to put someone in a choke hold you gotta push the square button while NOT pushing a direction on the analog pad.
To make matters worse, I can't sidestep left or right around the cover I'm trying to use, because half the time I try, I end up doing something crazy with the left/right equip slots, like unequipping the gun I'm aiming.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Either you're not pushing the buttons firmly, or you got a bad controller that isn't detecting the button presses right.
Or is setting the difficulty to Normal on my first play simply being overconfident?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yes, you are.
<!--QuoteBegin-TommyVercetti+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (TommyVercetti)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->At first, I didn't like the controls at all and they were very difficult to use<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
X-Box controls for MGS2 are complete crap. A lot of moves in the game simply cannot be done because the x-box controller doesn't have analog buttons for the XYAB and White and Black buttons.
<!--QuoteBegin-OttoDestruct+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (OttoDestruct)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> The metal gear for gameboy was for the win kthx.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yes it is.
Actually they aren't from the era. Those moves weren't invented until I think the late 80's early 90's, or something. Either way it was well before the timeline of the game. It was just an artistic liberty they took. Not that I mind, CQC pwns. :P
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Oh yea, and if you're holding up a gaurd and he gets lippy and won't give you anything, give him one to the kneecap, he'll reconsider his options.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Indeed. You can also pop them in the hand. Or if you're feeling really evil, you can then shoot out their radio, and simply leave. They'll be confused for a minute, then they'll try to run off. Of course the swift release of death will come before they make it to an ally... >:D

You're right, they couldn't. The PC version of MGS2 is one of the worst ports I've ever seen. To really play it right, you need to get a PS2 knockoff controller (w/ analog!). The good news is you can get those for $10 at Wal-Mart.
<!--QuoteBegin-TommyVercetti+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (TommyVercetti)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Also, Sam Fisher and Snake would both get pwned by an Army grunt, beacuse everyone knows their "stealth" would DEFINITELY get noticed in real life.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Except Snake doesn't do that. Big Boss especially doesn't do that. He uses camoflauge to blend in w/ the environment then slit your throat when you least expect it. >:D

On the topic of Metal Gear, favorite fight was in MGS1 vs. Grey Fox (though I just started MGS3). Btw, was there a way to play as him in the normal game? I know you could play as him in Integral, but I thought there was a way you could play as him in the normal SP campaign...

I don't really know anything about the special forces groups of each country getting pitted against each other in a duel to the death. Exciting I'm sure but I've never been a witness of such things.
<a href='http://www.specialoperations.com/Humor/Country.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.specialoperations.com/Humor/Country.htm</a>
Something to note, this topic isn't about special forces. I'm sorry.
So, you're basing that on THE VERY <b>VIDEO GAME</b> THAT SAM FISHER IS FROM? That's like declaring a serial killer innocent because he told you he didn't kill anybody.
*sigh*. I guess that day will <i>never</i> come because that game <i>certainly</i> isnt being made <i>right now.</i> <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
edit: <b>crap.</b> I just went to espionagemod.com and cried myself to sleep..
I'm rather glad I got to play with a ps2 controller instead of keyboard/mouse. I'm also very glad I put in the time to read about the first game, because it helped a lot for understanding this one.
It was good enough that now I have much more respect for the series, but still not enough to convince me that I should go out and buy a console, much less play MGS3. I guess that's another port to wait for.

lol.... no I've finished re 4 at least 3 times and unlocked everything it has to offer (handcannon, chicago typewriter.... which is pretty much everything there is to unlock...)
krauser and mendez were fun, but the other bosses are so-so in comparison to the fear, the end, boss, and volgin. Regular combat in re 4 is significantly higher on the awesome scale...
edit - venmoch ridicules krauser fight? how dare he...
<span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>***SPOILER***</span>
The cabin scene with the latino guy (forgot his name... been a while since i borrowed my roommates gamecube) was verrrrrrry close to what i had in mind. Back to the wall... no where to run. It seemed everytime the game put you in this type of situation... the bad guys... left? WTH? Keep the presure up! I was just starting to break a sweat!
<span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>/***SPOILER***</span>
They should have added more end game content. Something that even with the Tommy gun would have been challenging. Think gladiator except with chainsaws and guns. I know i know... sounds like I'm asking alot when you consider the other stuff (the ada mission seems so tacked on and lame... I'd rather have what i described).
Say... isn't there a RE4 thread?

You want to hear my theory?
They're new characters.
Well come on, i'd feel a bit cheated if they used ONLY characters from the previous games, they've GOT to introduce some new faces, although I would be quite suprised if they didn't stick some kind of link to MGS3 in there, i.e, one of the new characters is probably a son/daughter/niece/nephew of Zero/Paramedic/Sigint/Volgin.
