How To Have Fun As Frontiersmen?

I enjoy being Kharaa, not marines though
I love playing as the Kharaa and all the aliens, but I cant find myself to enjoy beign a marine... having to ask the commander fro health and guns, waiting forever, laggin like mad because we build everything in one spot and stay there.., get destroyed by Skulks, Fades, and Onos.

I would like to enjoy being a Marine seeing as everyone should know both to be a good player and just to even teams sometimes, but I have no fun. Being the commander is cool , but I can't work that quick on this old 500mhz computer : / so I am stuck as a Marine......

I spose it's because I have never won a game as a Marine, hell I have only killed maybe 4 aliens as a marine even after trying a lot.

Maybe it's the fact that I don't like being bossed around or maybe it's that I enjoy going solo, but still working as a team... I'm not sure what, but I cant seem to enjoy it... I like rushing the marines skulks, I enjoy setting up a hive and securing it, I enjoy destroying their base endgame..

What can I do to enjoy being a Marine? I guess I can see the joy in working as a team all the time and thanking the commander, but it gets boring.. I am not horrible, I play CS also so can fight with guns, I can build fine and work with my team, but I dont enjoy it.
Give me tips.. I also get very annoyed at how often you have to run back to the base and get ammo and how there is no way to heal other than healthpacks which commanders never seem to give out.. I hear Welders can, but no one gives them out either!

I am sure I will be looking at this post and saying I was an idiot in a few days.. I just need to play more as them and improve my skills at fighting off those pesky aliens, but I didn't enjoy the Kharaa much either until I read a few guides.. , every marine guide is telling you simply to be the commanders **obscenity**, no tips for attacking specific aliens (skulks, lerks, onos, fade)

You're probably never going to like them as much as you like the aliens. You've already gotten it your head that you like the aliens more, and there's not much you can do to combat that.

I'd say just play them more. I hated the aliens at first, but after I learned to stop playing them the same way I played marines, I started liking all the sneaking around and backstabbing.

I still prefer the marines over the aliens, but I'm not as hesitant to join an alien team anymore.

It's more fun for me as a marine if there's someone on the team to buddy up with. It also seems to make me more effective, my score goes up. You don't just have to be bossed around... The commander isn't God and he needs your input too, so suggest stuff. Just don't keep repeating yourself.

I'm mainly an Alien player, due to the fact that Marines are STILL whored, and if I'm playing with friends, it's the easiest for us to all get on the Alien team rather than Marine team.

In pubs, being a marine usually is not all that fun, mainly due to idiot teammates and newbie commanders. But the Marines don't have this quality exclusively to themselves. I've ran into many an incompetent and newbish alien team, that just couldn't tell their teeth apart from their arse. Those are the games that half of these "OMG Awesome Marine Win!" story originate from ;p

Anyways, you might need to get friends first to enjoy playing as Marines. But, I still have TONS of fun skulking, so...

    Kha-rawr!

the whole flow of the game, by abilities and such, is:

A: Aliens job is to trick marines.

They hide in corners, on walls, above doors, they cloak, they blink, they jump out and leap and swarm and bite, and swoop in for the kill while you are busy buildin that resource node.

B: Marines job is to not get tricked.

You get huge nasty armor and weapons, but you've gotta stay alive long enough, and hoard enough rp's to get them.

I find entertainment in both sides of the scenario. I enjoy finding a new nook or cranny in a map. (such as on caged, those two holes above the marine base door, oh i was happy when i found those!) I enjoy finding new vents. I enjoy cloaking until a squad walks by then taking them all out with swipe. I enjoy fighting to the last bit of health before blinking away and undoing all the progress those dumb jarheads made. I really love hiding near a node untill the comm drops the rt, then taking out the guard and the builder, and the unfinished rt.

By the other persuasion, i love when aliens try to trick me, but fail because i'm a step ahead of them. Checking above a doorway as i step in a room, and taking out the hiding skulk before he can react. Walking out of the base on caged, being hit by a few spikes, and immidiately lmg'ing a lerk hiding in that exact same spot i like to hide in. Taking out a freshly scanner sweeped cloaked fade. Running out of ammo as a skulk dances around, then promptly pistoling him. Oh and being in a squad, covering the guy ahead of me, when a skulk jumps out at him, and killing it to save my buddy, thats a good one too. Although not really fitting with my point, another great moment... end of the game, all the hives are dead, i've got no ammo, and depleated ha, and a welder. The last skulk comes after me, we duel, and he goes down to a welder as i've got 4 health left to win the game.... that was cool

so yeah marines are fun, but only if you are good at being alien, so you know what to expect and can counter it

zoda, if you enjoy the command perhaps you should try a venture into the NCO arena. Start making simple suggestions and take command of small squad battles. For the most part, most Marine players will support a competent battlefield leader and do what works. Although being a squad leader is considerably less stress than being the actual commander, you will have the burden of responsibility if you decide to take charge. It balances out quite nicely I think, in most games the people who act as combat leaders usually secure areas before the commander sets waypoints and that saves the entire team time. Since combat leaders bleed a lot of pressure off the commander (mainly waypoints and securing areas), it allows the commander to focus on the overall game instead of small areas.

Try it out, just say, "I'm going to check out/secure (insert area here), couple of you guys come with me," you may be surprised at the result.

By the by, attacking skulks is very straightforward: keep them in your sights. Attacking lerks and gorges is easy, they die fast. To kill a fade takes skill if you're alone and unupgraded, but always charge. Always charge! To kill an onos (only if he's alone) use the geography to get behind buildings or walls and keep firing. If you strafe-jump you can usually avoid his horn. I have yet to singlehandedly kill an onos because one of his @%$# buddies always manages to come in the room, but oh I will. I will.

Take heart, I've knifed three Onoses to date, you'll have your day in the sun.

    thanks for all the tips!!

I'd love to be a squad commander and using the pistol over the LMG sounds like a great idea. How many time's have I seen the marines lose because they fial to sucessfull gain control of a hive and secure it?

I think if I know maps as both teams I will be able to play them better and also playign as both gives you knowldege of your enemy that can make you think one step ahead.... Guess it's time I practice being a marine! I'm a little scared of those skulks though!! they're just so quick and confusing... swaying left to right ect!! at least I can expect it

Left to right? That's a walk in the park.

Try hitting me when I'm on Celerity, going up the wall, across the ceiling, doubling back halfway down the other side and then dropping to chew your ankles off.

Best of luck. And remember - while it might not be fun all the time, do what the commander asks you to.

Injury, you didn't "single-handedly" knife an Onos to death unless the enemy player was AFK or such a horrible player that there is no sense in bragging about it.

    A) It would take many, many, knife hits to down an

    B) --ANY-- should be able to stomp you flat while you swing your puny knife. Bite or charge, it doesn't matter.

    C) EVEN if you were to deal the TON of damage necessary to weaken an , they could easily run away due to their higher speed.

Feel like clarifying your little BS post?

Eidal, I never said I singlehandedly knifed three Onoses, just that I've accomplished the feat. If you're going to nitpick, no need to sound overtly hostile.
