Why Don't The Commanders Research.....

Jetpacks and the Vision Enhancement
I find that commanders don't research the vision enhancement and/or say that jetpacks are useless(like on ns_eclipse). When attacking the hive, most of the time you can just land on the hive(with jetpacks) and just use your HMG or knife to destory it. Vision helps out for ambushes and acts as hive sight(Can you wear HA with a jetpack?). Do you think I just went to a n00b server or what?

Some commanders don't research jetpacks because they want their team to work together. Jetpacks encourage rambo "tactics".

You had a newb commander. Motion tracking is usually the first upgrade that commanders get. As for jetpacks, you don't always *need* them, but it's a good idea to research them just in case you do need them later on.

I usually start on the HA/jetpack upgrades once I'm done with motion tracking, and an armor upgrade. I don't get weapon upgrades until I've done 2 armor upgrades. Having heavy firepower isn't going to help if your marines still die quickly. Medium firepower, while staying alive longer, is better IMHO.

Have you people notices that you can jetpack ontop of a hive and just knife it?

Hrm.....have you seen 5 people with jetpacks storm a hive room and don't get killed by skuls? Or even better, having 1 marine with a jetpack wield/knife a hive without dying.

I use jetpacks primarily for vent access (as a commander) - on a map like Eclipse, I find HA and Phase Gates to be a much more effective tactic. On Caged or Nancy, I'm much more likely to go for jetpacks.

I used to research motion tracking first, but most marines can't use the information effectively (ie, knowing where the alien is doesn't mean they can hit it). This is especially true when the aliens have fades and you don't have HA/HMGs yet. Motion Tracking is also incredibly expensive, requiring a building and 45 resources.
If you have marines that can aim, then motion tracking might be a good first upgrade, but on most public servers that isn't going to happen. Even if they CAN aim, they're going to die quickly if you don't have at least heavy armor ready by the time the fades come.

My usual track now is to make a beeline for heavy armor, then get HMGs, then motion tracking, then all weapon upgrades, then all armor upgrades. Jetpacks are last.

Caged is an awesome map for Jetpacks, almost every Hive is in range of a vent. The Jetpack gives a lot more freedom and mobility for the Marine, but sacrifices the tank ability Heavy Armor offers. I prefer Jetpacks to Heavy Armor due to my uh.. need for speed. Motion Tracking is so very valuable, whenever I have this ability I take time to look around to see if there's aliens in close proximity. Alien ambushes can be stopped with a simple 45 RP, of course the motion tracking isn't 100% guaranteed, but it gives the Marines their "wallhack" too.

Motion tracking, though expensive, is a single one time payment that pays for itself over and over in saved resources, namely those resources attached to marines who aren't dying a lot because they can see the alien before it sees them. With motion tracking, the marines can now setup ambushes for the aliens, instead of it being the other way around.

I was able to kill 10 fades in a row that were attacking the hive room we secured, just by watching them move around, and planning ambushes while they focused their attention and energy on the turret factory. Ambushing a fade is the best tactic for killing them, as even though they're great at long (acid rocket) and short (claw) ranges, there's that mid-range where you're out of claw range and (if timed properly) he's too low on energy to acid rocket you while your HMG tears him apart. Oh and since you're in mid range, the HMG's spread is just about the right size for a Fade.

Ok, how bout 3 or four out of 8 marines go scouting around for the hive. Would that work? And I was wondering about your opinion about whole marine teams going Jetpacks.

The biggest advantage to motion tracking is that skulks can easily ambush marines by running up a wall or ceiling. Motion tracking makes that a lot harder. Even if they can't hit it fast, they know it's there.

Motion Tracking allows me to move faster and more efficiently as a marine through the map. Never once have I been ambushed by a skulk when there was motion tracking researched, as a Skulk won't sit in the same spot that long in a pub.

Motion Tracking = more useful than armor upgrades, etc.

    Motion Detecting? What Motion Detecting?

There's no Motion Detection upgrade. Now let us never speak of this again...

Seriously, it's probably one of the best kept Marine secrets/under used superabilites. Motion Detecting, Phase Gates and Jetpacks all either eliminate Marine's weaknesses or eliminate Alien strengths. I love my Shottie/JP combo.

Jetpacks have their uses, but are limited by the skeet shooting abilities of fade players I'm more of a fan of the HA/HMG combo, with phasegates and a slower, more "grind it out" approach. I really like jetpacks on grenadiers, just because they're easy prey for skulks. Even when your grenadier's in the midst of the squad, having him be able to lift off and hover cuts down on the chances of a suicidal skulk getting lucky and dropping the squad's main source of anti-structure firepower. Of course, if I had my druthers, and was assaulting a heavily fortified area, I'd just have my squad hold position long enough to get some some hot, sloppy siege gun lovin down.

As far as motion tracking goes, I think it's hands down the best tech marines can have at their disposal. All the HMG's and welders in the world don't stack up to the ability to know that there's a skulk hiding above the door you're about to go through.

Gotta say jetpacks are under used - 25 to research and 9RP per pack -- not was good as HA by any means to a newbie but a wonderful equalizer if your boys are getting fanged and your low on RP......

A experienced marine with a jetpack is something to fear if your a alien - fades are there only real threat.

JP's also very good if u need to push out scout/take those far off RP's....

JP's they shouldnt be used as a backbone of your attacking force (except in emergencies) but they make wonderful interference troopers to the aliens - slowing them down messing up there buildings..

Oh yeah there also heck of a lot more fun to play in then boring HA..

I love chomping down jetpackers, whether they have LMG shotgun grenade or HMG, it isn't hard to land 2 bites as a skulk. Usually 2 bite-death is the case, because the money spent on getting jetpacks, and I'm still a skulk, means it's relatively early game.

Anyways, I like practicing my skulk ninja abilities (WITHOUT LEAP) against jetpackers. Lots of fun.

Balance is everything. A jetpack is so incredibly useful in the hands of a CO/Commander's Handyman/Greasemonkey that I now never forget to research it. However, going for broke without anyone in a plastic deathsuit isn't the greatest tactic either. You shouldn't plan the whole thing in advance anyway. Keep a whole mish-mash of ideas in your head, then piece them together on the fly. Dynamic commanding is your friend.

I usually don't research motion detection, primarily because it's bugged on many maps, I think i've seen it work on two maps, and right now I don't even remember the name of those maps. It's damn sad, because it's a fantastic upgrade, that REALLY helps, and doesn't cost more the 45 resources

with motiontracking, the hunted becomes the hunter. The few times MT has worked, i've been able to ambush fades, skulkers, gorges, all kinds of Kharaa
