Is This What This Game Was Supposed To Be?

I downloaded it last night and I have played a few games. Everytime, I see that there are more Aliens than Marines so I join the Marines. Well, every game I have been in, the aliens don't die, they just sit outside of our respawn and kill us with ease but I and my team mates will put 5 or 6 clips into them seeming to have no effect. After a while, some Rhino comes and we get screwed. Did you mean to make the aliens almost unkillable while making it seem like the Marines die with ease?

You need to find some better teams. It sounds like you are joining the tale end of games where marines are losing.

The game is very unbalanced right now.

It sounds like you have only joined a game when it was just about over. You probably left (understandably) after that frustrating situation. The next time that happens wait around for the next game to start and you will find it a bit different.

As a marine, you want to *prevent* the aliens from upgrading and getting the more advanced (read deadly) units of the onos and fade. To effectivly battle those two you really need the second tier weapons and a jetpack or heavy armor.

Don't get frustrated and quit, this is a great game and the imbalances will fade away as you gain experience. =)

Not really. On public servers marines often time lose due to things such as bad commander or not working together. Aliens do have it a tiny bit easier on public servers due to there ability to survive alone against marine after second hive. However with a good commander a marine team can be nearly unstoppable.

The Marines seem to die in one to three hits normally, that's why there's Heavy Armor. The Marines are not as chaotic as alien teams and cannot operate as effectively in the field by themselves as an alien could. Marines are tied to the commander and their sub-unit leaders with a string and the best answer to raw firepower is tactics and numbers. Sure the Fade has wide splash damage, but why do you have to bunch up and take the damage all at once? If you've noticed, there's no scoreboard for the Marines (though I've been told there is one if you use Gamespy[?]) and dying is not that much of a deal if you and your buddies can wax a few aliens and take a position. Comradeship in the Marine hierarchy is very important, every player's effort counts towards something. Everyone has their bad days.

Take a gander in Frontiersman Strategy if you're interested in Marine tactics, there's helpful tips and advice there, though nothing can subsitute for battlefield experience. Stick with it, victory is quite satisfying and there are almost never any hard feelings on either side. This community is still wonderful.

Khaara goals --
Secure all 3 hives asap
Secure as many resources as possible or needed
Eliminate Marines

If the Khaara can get 3 hives up fast the Marines are pretty much screwed. If the Marines secure at least one hive real fast they will most likely win.

I found out that after the patch the battle for the 3rd hive seems most crucial.

I've been in games where marines controlled 2 hives, but lost after a long battle.

I've bene in games where aliens had 3 hives, but marines took a great leap and took control back of 2 hives, and won the game.

It's all depended on the skills of the players... and most importantly, teamwork.

How can people have the audacity to suggest that the ALIENS are overpowered? I have played in about 6 games in the last 2 days and every single one of them the aliens lost. Not only this, but they lost for complete **obscenity** reasons. Like the **obscenity** heavy armor suit... it BEWILDERS me that upgrading armor boosts both the absorption and armor points. Aren't aliens supposed to win in close quarters? Especially the alien counter to HA, which is supposedly the Fade. For **obscenity** sakes.

You swear a lot.

HA's absorption does not increase with armor upgrades; it is 95% regardless of armor level. The only effect of upgrades on HA is an additional 30 points per level.

Someone said somewhere on the board that a Blizzard dev once said "the game is balanced when equal numbers of people complain that each side is overpowered." Sweet, looks like NS is balanced.

Yes coil, I realized I am an idiot about the HA. Still, shouldnt a fade win 1v1 on HA?

I was 1v1 on a HA (he had HMG too which all HA seem to have :\) and he wasn't even looking at me when I started hitting him. I know I got 2 good hits on him before he turned and started shooting me... and I died. I even had full health and regeneration. I hope there are hitboxes in the next version, so head hits and back hits do higher damage.

The problem of the mod atm is that most of the time its frustrating for either aliens or marines. 80% of the time for marines tho because they just cant prevent the aliens from getting t least two hives and overrunning marine bases and finally the base.

As a marine you first secure your base against those skulk rushes. Alot of marines die, alot of skulks die. While the early game action only takes place in the marine corner, the aliens can advance and spread almost uninterrupted. So at the time when marines have secured one or two nozzles with alot of turrets, a phase gate and armories, or EVEN A HIVE, the aliens have their second hive completed and have claimed most of their nearby nozzles. That means its usually fade time. Marines usually get their HMG and HA about 5-10 minutes later. Thus they have to fight fades with LMGs and pistols. Theyre losing one outpost or/and the hive they might have claimed till then.

After a while of back and forth, marines get HMG and HA access. But they just lack of the resources to outfit every marine with it. So only 3 guys will have HA and HMG while the rest is just fade fodder.

The aliens arent thrown back now as they have fades guarding their approach points and keep harrassing the marines outposts. Then the marines lose their one or two extra nozzles and are fought back into their base where they might manage to keep the stand for 5 minutes till theyre plain overrun by onos and its just a spawn->die.

We had about 10 minutes of early game where we went out to claim new resources and build approach points, 10 minutes of midgame where we tried to defend out outposts against those fades and 10 minutes of endgame where we are desperately trying to push back the fades with LMGs and the left over HMG and HA and GL. But at that point the game is already lost.

This is exactly the plot in the about 15 rounds of marines i played in a row. I havent been on a marine winner team since. And i really dont know why i keep playing and trying still. And its not because the marine players are newbs. I think that if both sides have an equal quality of players the aliens will win. Simply because on the marine side the commander has to represent ALL the strategic factors that the whole aliens team together represents. The marine players have to depend on the commander to give them orders. If they roam out and seek and destroy they dont even have a chance in the first place because their bases are simply overrun.

Aliens have it easier. One gorge can build a whole base within minutes if he has enuff resources. And 3 gorges can do that parallelly while the marine team can only concentrate on one base at a time because the commander only has 2 eyes and two hands.

I dont know but obviously the marine side cant provide the speed of advance needed to push back the aliens. The midgame where the aliens are just overwhelming comes WAY too fast. Marines dont have enuff basis for the midgame till then. Aliens do. And they just spread more and more while the marines are stagnating or even decreasing.

Hop into #evolutionarily some time and ask around for demos of some matches EC has played against other clans. You will see some VERY effective marine strategies, and plenty of marine wins as well. It's perfectly possible; marines simply need to learn teamwork and remain on the offensive.

Really, nearly every single game I've ever played has always annoyingly had more marines than aliens.
• DoombringerDoombringer Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8679Members, Constellation
Yes, so much of the marines' game comes down to the commander. The aliens don't need nearly as much teamwork to advance and eventually win. Any alien can become a gorge and effectively be a 'commander' by use of their building ability. They can also grant themselves new weapons and abilities just by evolving. The only way the marines get this stuff is if the commander hands it out. Yet people still want the marines turrets limited, HMG damage lowered, HA defense lowered.. or some other such nonsense.

This is why I say, the marines are definitely not overpowered. Their reliance on a commander more than evens the odds.

Annoyingly is correct, even with the autoteam on to where you cannot join an outrageously overpowered team, people will set in the ready room waiting for a spot to open in Marines so they don't have to go Kharaa.

pshh you shoulda seen it back in 1.00

on almost NO server could you find even teams, everyone wanted to play marines, now those were problems

If the marines have a decent commander and play as a team, they can stomp the aliens.

Just doesn't always work out that way...

Think it's all about offense and a good Commander. I'm playing NS since one week now and its really surprising (or not ) what difference a good Commander makes. If he manages to keep his Marines busy, what he will do if he's quite good and if they stick together (Team is everything) the Marines have a good chance to win!
