new dave matthews band cd
I haven't listened to it yet, because I don't want to spoil the experience by listening to it **** off. Be forewarned, if you were considering purchasing this album, that it has some really lame copy protection that INSTALLS A NEW CD DRIVER THAT GARBLES THE CD.

Jesus.

I don't know about you, but I cannot stand being treated like a criminal when trying to use a product I've legitimately purchased.

If you need help getting around it, try this link http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~jhalderm/cd3/ It might take a little fineggling to get the driver to appear.

If this is the way BMG and Dave Matthews Band intend on treating their customers, then I'm happy to take my business elsewhere.

Edit: I should add, I've successfully ripped it, so all this succeeded in doing is **** me off first.

Why would you buy that garbage anyways? Dave Matthews....yuck.

Unfortunately these new CD's are starting to do this and it's not going to stop, so I'd just say that we are screwed no matter what.

Can't you just hold SHIFT when you insert the CD which stops the autorun from installing it's software?

I remember doing the same with my A Perfect Circle CD. Copy protection didn't stop me ripping it, it only stopped my CD player from playing it, which is what made me decide to rip it instead. Nice work RIAA.

*EDIT* Dave Matthews Band, I like your taste

They did at least put the "copy protection" disclaimer on the cover right? I've sworn to never buy those CDs.

Traditional hifi cd player, some cables, a sampling program, mp3 encoder.
Wonder how they'll stop that. A decoder chip in our ears with encrypted music maybe?

Wait, so let me get this straight: They actually **** UP your CD/DVD-drive if you DARE pop their CD in it? Can't you sue for intentional destruction of property or something?

I think he means it just makes your computer unable to read that particular CD. Still, the only way software from a CD can be installed automatically is autorun, so just disable it and profit.

Well, perhaps profit sends the wrong message. Try 'Be Happy'

Happened with me, on the Kasabian album. BMG tried to install a new CD-Driver for it, along with some bulls**t "CD Playing Software".

Bye bye BMG, left-shift when inserting CD > All copy protections.

The only one to actually refuse to read was Shakira's album, Laundry Day, but that was circumvented by sticking in work's CD Replicator, and doing a non-protected copy!

CD Replicators FTW! (not being use illegally mind you. We use it for making copies of driver CD's. No, sorry, "backups" of them... )

Everyone knows Anti-piracy methods only make things harder for the paying customer.

    Anti-Piracy measures promote piracy.

They've toiled for hours on that CD... and only got millions more then the average worker. IT SHOULD BE BILLIONS I TELL YOU.... BILLLLLIONS!!!!!

    Solution:
    Dowload Knoppix
Put Knoppix into your CD Drive
    Reboot
    Rip CD onto HDD
    Reboot

It surprises me that DMB of all bands would do something like this. I mean, don't they support bootlegging and stuff like that? Maybe I'm just lumping Dave into the big group of jam bands that lets you, but I thought that was the case.

Although it was probably more of the record label's decision than the band's.

Yeah, that's the sad part. I'm nearly positive its BMG and not DMB that mandated this. DMB does have an open taping policy.

This reminds me of a thing a friend of mine told me a while ago. He bought The Sims 2 (I know, I know...) and apparently couldn't get his legit copy to run due to the copy protection. It ended up with him having to ask someone to make an image, mount the image, and run it like that. Just thought it was a bit amusing how the only way he could get around the copy protection was to do what the copy protection was meant to prevent.

Their argument is not that it "destroys your property" it just "forces their program instead of your normal player"

I suppose it's one of those things where the CD can only be read on a proprietary player?

And then you put the DVD into your DVD drive, rip an image of it (removing the FBI warnings and other nonsense), then make a region-free copy of it. :o

Copy protection and DRM (digital rights management) is a joke now.

If they can hack custom operating systems/homebrew code onto an XBOX/PS2, how hard can it really be to make a copy of some form of digital media and ignore the anti-piracy features of it?

Besides, your DVD player would have to be compatible with this new "protection" for it to even work.

The FCC proposed it's "broadcast flag" that would have made it harder for people to record shows off of the TV and distribute them on the internet, but it was unanimously struck down. The same thing would happen with this. Forcing a brand new (stupid) standard onto all hardware manufacturers won't go over well either.

Hopefully they'll soon realize that no form of digital media can ever be TRULY protected, and they'll give up trying to treat consumers like criminals.

It's not like release-groups (pH, iRO, dvr, RNS, RH etc etc etc) uses windows so this has any affect on them. The albums will spread on the internet anyway - this only affects the regular users who want to listen to their newly purchased cds on their computer.

In 2060 each purchase of copyrighted RIAA or MPAA material will come with a free Combine Civil Protection bodyguard, who will beat you with a stick if you try to copy it or let someone other than yourself listen to the noise.

I really wonder how long its going to take these executives to get this. If you can listen to it/ watch it you can copy it. Always. There is nothing they can do about it.
