Bots And Older Versions Help!

Having trouble with rcbot and ns 2.0
I really love NS but I really hate steam, it has alot of nice things but it's showed itself to be as glorified spyware. For that and a few technical resons I choose to not use steam, and I know I'm not alone in the choice. So as far as I know I can't install NS3.0, and the last NS I have is 2.0. So i'm out on alot of fixes and things of the like, if there is a way to run the later NS versions without steam please let me know. My other problem is rcbot, I've tried using this program to play by myself or on a lan but the bots like to be really retarded, as in ignoring comm waypoints and getting stuck together for rines, and not building and again getting stuck as aliens. I've gotten new waypoint files but they don't seam to want to use them, I have the newest version of rcbot that I know of, so I'm thinking NS2.0 may be the problem. I really miss palying NS and if I can get the bots to work I can play it with a small number of friends, so I would really appreciate any help with this.

    in what ways?

EDIT: What does it do when you try to install NS 3.0? Did you try uninstalling v2.0 first? And if you want to play any of the newer versions of NS your just going to have to bite the bullet and play on steam.

RCbot is okay but the bots are kind of crappy i think. I think it helps if you go and manually set waypoints on the areas they can go but i havn't really done it yet.

Thing is, Steam isn't going away. You might not like it, that's your choice, but Valve isn't going to turn back on months/years of hard work
It's not that bad... I like Steam more, actually. But let's not let this turn into WON vs Steam.

    sounds like someone hates legality

Legality has nothing to do with any of this, steams lows my system down and I don't agree with the concept. I don't care if you favor steam or not, I'm asking for a solution, I want to see if there is a way to play NS 3.0 with bots on a lan, I don't need to play on the internet, I just miss playing it with friends. Steam is great for alot of people and chances are I'll evetually start using it once my other options deplete. For now though I'm just one or two problems away from being able to host a NS3.0 LAN, people can't connect or the server freezes, also, on my friends system it says "invalid authetication information" and he can't create his own server, however I have no problems with it.

You can't play NS without steam. It doesn't matter if you like it or not, you still have to have it to play NS.

Besides, just setup an account with your HL cdkey and get all the updates, then just play in offline mode all you want without having to be on the internet. Then download rcbot or play on lan with friends. You will still have to have steam but not necessarily online.

i dont understand why people dont like steam so much to where they are at the point of boycotting it. you dont even have to look at steam, just set it to run in the background and start with windows, then put the icons for whatever you want on the desktop. boom, dont even know steam is running. and it saves all of us the trouble of dealing with your whining about how you hate steam because you are morally opposed to it for whatever reason.

Ugh.. getting NS to work on a LAN is a pain. I have been setting up these regular LANs with a bunch of friends (16+) and it´s a full days work every time. Do note that this LAN is setup on an internet café I rent with all legit keys and internet access and it´s still a pain.

Actually this reminds of something else I must do. But I do think the answer you are looking for is stickied in either the tech support or the server forum.
    Good luck.

yes, steam IS a pile of crap. but valve isnt going back to won, so you have to get used to it.

ns 3.0 (all betas and final releases) work on won with the exception of a few bugs with the chat system.

but you cant have ns 2.0 and ns 3.0 installed at the same time in the same folder. the ns folder name always has to be "ns" or you will get some sort of "divide by zero" error. what you could do is make a batch file to change the names of the folders depending on what version of ns you wanted to play.

if you dont know about won2 already, head over to www.steamlessproject.nl its basically a resurrection of won and it works to a greater or lesser extent. but dont expect to find many ns servers (i have only seen 1) 90% of them are cs and the remaining 10% or so are a combo of hldm, tfc and dod. also to note, there are not very many won2 servers yet, i have only seen around 400 at peak times and 25 or 50 at night.

Thanks Gigabyte and Thanatos, I know I will eventually end up using steam but I want to do without for as long as I can, and John, it was a question not a whine, you can just "set it to start up with windows and pretend it's not there" and drop it. I already said I don't give a crap about how YOU feel about steam, I posted MY question for MY resons, and I got good answers from good people, so i'm done here. Keep ranting if ya want, you won't get another reply.

You can just get the v2.0-compatible versions from the bot's sites. However, they are probably long gone.

You have to tell the server that your IP is the authentication server, and any clients who wish to join have to do so too.

I can't remember the file name tho.

Only problem I have with steam is its constant crashing (need to restart it after every game I play, or no other game will load), and that things are cheaper to buy in the shops, than over steam... gg?

Oh and I'm not a valve groupie =]
