Make some plans on paper first. The scenery, is it a dark place?, supermarket?, invasion of earth by aliens, an office ..., etc. you name it! Then ask yourself "how would it be if aliens were here and an special group of men would eliminate them". Is it dark, were is the best place to start for them...
Draw then the chambers, vents on paper, connect them with small ways,.... But this is the work of a mapmaker, we can't make a map for you
And some throw-away layouts...
An OUTPOST on a planet with interesting terrain (snow and ice, or red Mars-like rock, but probably nothing alive outside for storyline reasons [Kharaa will overtake any livable planets and then that planet has to be nuked to ash]). Of course, I wouldn't suggest anything outdoors (DONT start that topic again, or I will KILL YOU), the map could have smaller buildings interjoined by enclosed but transparent walkways and lots of underground tunnels for Skulks and sometimes Marines. It would be fun to arrange how one glass (or rather, transparisteel) walkway could see into another area of the map. The lighting could be from skylights, but the map should also have some dark, ambient areas with scarce electric lighting. The Hives should be dark with sunlight filtering in through cracks, and the light should have beams to make the room uber-cool (you know how to do light-beams, with the gradient texture, right?). The Hives and Marine Start areas should be the four largest outpost buildings. Marine Start should be primarily sunlit.
Inspired yet?
[EDIT] Don't just use a skybox for the outside, use large, sloping brushes interrupted here and there with rock, and throw in some cliffs in the distance to make the perimeter of the map. You could use Nem's excellent terrain generator which imports directly to .MAP format. LINKY to Nifty Tools
Make sure the outside terrain isn't really bad-looking or seriously detailed with uber-wpolys.
Lastly, if nobody takes this idea, ITS MINE, IM DOING IT!
Your on the USS Shara, A spaceship where the crew died ( ). Powers off to most areas of the ship. The marines attatch and blow a hole in the wall to enter. You will get to play in there ship and that area will always be lighted. The aliens escaped from the labs and took over the cargo hold, a maze of boxes creates and other things. the ships Elevador has smashed to the bottom floor preventing the marines from rushing the aliens. and the humans will have plenty to weld open and close. More Later.

And may I request that we be allies? The borg is gaining ground...
Edit: By the way, that planet in the window is not a part of the sky box, I actualy did make it out of brushes.
Okay, you don't have to rub it in that I don't have photoshop
