Connection Problems?

Hi, i've been recently having this problem connecting to servers then having them unresponsive. It happens randomly but very often.

I would join a server, and appear in the readyroom, sometimes i would be able to run around for a few seconds before I'm stuck and can't move anymore. I would still be able to use my mouse to look around and that's about it. When I TAB to the scoreboard everybody's latency is 0 except for mine and my net_graph shows my loss going crazy from 30-70 and choke 10-20. I've tried reinstalling both Steam and NS and it doesn't seem to work. I've also noticed that when I'd join a NSArmslab.com server my Norton Firewall would alert me that the server is intruding my computer.

Is there someone out there who know's what might be the problem here? thanks <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Norton. :\

I think it's a safe bet that that's where your problems lie. Set it to trust steam.exe, "ignore all events", or the equivalent, and try again.

    Incase it does not work:
    What connection are you on?
    What are your rate settings?
Do you connect over a LAN? (Hub/router)

Your config seems fine. At this stage I still think we're looking at some other software on the PC causing the problem.

The Netgear device you quoted functions as a router, so pressuming you have DMZ off, (which you will have if you don't know what it is,) it's pretty safe to turn off the firewall for the purposes of debugging. Close all the non-essentail programs in the system tray and try again.

    Still no luck?
    Start, run, msconfig.exe
Select "diagnostic startup" (To revert, use "normal startup".)
Restart (ignore wierdness when you boot up)
    Run steam
    Try again

We'll start applying solutions from here on in, depending on results of above tests.

If you're behind a router, then (normally) you don't want to be running a software firewall anyway. 99% of routers come with a built-in hardware firewall, which are much more resilient than software ones, as they don't have the user as a soft link.

Try right-clicking on the Norton Internet Security globe (which represents the firewall side of NIS), and left-click on "Disable Firewall". Then try it again.

Failing that, follow BlueN's advice, diagnostics mode the PC, then try Steam again.
Bear in mind that not every PC setup will run games in Diagnostics Mode, as many services, and driver functions will be bypassed.
