A Need For A Server Ratings Service Site

THis is an amazing game. period.

THe only problem as always is not on the game side...but the human side.

We have measures against disruptive players..but did anyone think about how to deal with server admins that abuse their powers?

Well, the easiest would be to simply not play there. Understood. Its their servers...and no one can force them to conform to any standards. However, as gamers who frequent these servers wouldn't we be benefited by a WHitelist/Blacklist of servers based on how well these servers are administered?

For example,

Let us say on server lets say "{K-9}" that the admin let's call him "WhyT" is on a team which vastly outnumbers the opposing team. The opposing team continues to point this out...but continues to play. The admin is silent on this.

By combination of tactics, skill, and luck the opposing team starts winning. People start to drop from the admin team and all of a sudden the situation is reversed. Suddenly the admin starts to threaten action such as kicking players.

As the opposing team wins, the admin continues to threaten to kick and ban players who did not heed his suddenly active plea for even teams. People who speak up pointing out this fact would be gagged and then kicked.

These players could go to this WHitelist/Blacklist and then if the server they were on was not listed they could create a new list and fill out a rating which would reflect on this poor experience. They could also under comments post a more detailed description of their experience on that server.

Similarly if a server boasts innovative additions that make the gamer's experience more fun, full, and the admins are on the ball and the server is often praised by many for the experiences they have on there then they could fill out a couple ratings which are positive. Again they could detail what made this server so fun.

THis is honestly something that we the end users of this wonderful game would have to implement. A central service which would point players in the direction of servers that they would have the least amount of headaches on and help them avoid the ones that would give them an extremely negative experience.

Categories could also be more than just experiences and admin behavior but other things such as supplemental features on that server, server stability, and etc.

I believe something like this would be a great benefit to this community and help make player's experience even more fun with this wonderful game.

I like your idea, and add it to the F1 menu in HL-NS.

    Ahhhh, i have just recently been abused by an admin. I was campin at a vital resource spot in the beginning of the game, when these 3 skulks came in and i <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> them all <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> . But unluckily for me, the admin was one of those guys , he got **obscenity**, and killed me using his powers of admin <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> .
Of course, he tried it several more times with the same outcome, i kill him, he abuses power of admin <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> .
Finally, after much killing of the alien team(by me), he decides to ban me forever from his server.... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    P.S. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> Im happy cuz i kicked his a$$ <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    This sound's intresting.

As an Admin I hope I'm not like that when I play on my server <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
I'm usally quite during game play, and only takes action when the Players ( 4 or more) starts complaining.

But for the most time the Players sort things out by themself.

There's no feasible, reliable way to have something like this. All ratings would be solely based on "he said, she said" garbage, thus making the ratings pointless at best. At worst, it would be arbitrary and clique-dependent.

Plus, there's very little stopping the people rating the server from being any less childish than the admin. Seeing as there's a whole lot more idiots in the world compared to competent people, that's bascially what the majority of "server raters" would be.

A good way to do this, is to have a group of trusted people to review the servers.

"Trusted" by whom? You? Someone else? No thanks. Again, it'd all just be hearsay.

Trusted by me? I call those people "friends". And why would they need a website to tell me gossip about a server?

No. I mean someone perhaps the team, and site leader would choose.

Edit: Mouth, you seem quick to anger and eager to flame. Maybe you wanna cool that man? It's not too nice.

The problem is most people would rather spend their time playing than reviewing servers. I'm sure the NS team has enough on their hands to need to worry about another situation. Trial and error is what I've always done and for the most part, my good experiences far outweigh my bad ones. Besides, who would evaluate all 16,000+ servers of... a certain other modification? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I said it would be end user driven..not done by the wonderful NS team...

IF one looks at a server and it has high marks across the board with a large set of users then one could possibly draw their own conclusions aff?

And if negative acrross the board with a large number of users then negatively right?

There would also be a simple registration procedure to be able to participate and already there you weed out alot of people...surprising but true...most people who are...uh...non constructive would not bother with even that slight incovenience (people are very lazy unless motivated lol)

THis would also take care of having one person spam rate...in that for that one category they would only be allowed one rating slot.I believe that there are many polls that use the registration to track and limit entries.

Regardless...I believe it would be a nice service by the community for the community

mouth has always just been about trolling. Don't pay attention to him.

It is a good idea, but hard to impliment in my opinion. Some servers do not like profanity, so people kicked / banned for that would give you a bad review. Some servers promote teamwork, which is hard on a pub, and may kick / ban for not working as a team.

Maybe a site that listed the rules of the servers. People that wanted to participate could point people on their servers to the site. On the site allow people to make constructive comments and such.

Actually, such a “grading” system for servers wouldn’t be that hard to do. On it’s most simplistic level, it’s nothing more than any other review/report page that I’m sure some of us have used to let others know what we think about a movie, book or even (gasp!) a video game.

Now, while I say that it shouldn’t be that hard to do, I’m speaking completely from the fact that there are a number of “reader/user review” pages out there. I’m having to assume that the net code isnt too difficult and that it could be set up to handle all the different aspects of a server. For instance, there would be the overall “grade” that the player gives the server in addition to check boxes to identify different aspects about the server (is there a swear filter/cussing rule, new player friendly, server system specs, individual admin grades, etc).

I know that being the “victim” of a pissy admin that kept admin killing me because I was “too good,” I wouldn’t have minded being able to rate that server, along with all of the really good servers that I’ve been on. I think that something like this would actually be very helpful for those people trying to find a server that’s “right” for them.

Check out the following links to see what I’m talking about for existing user reviews.
