Quick Question

In the current patch, are there any restrictions on who can see\hear what you say, say_team and +voicerecord when you're dead? I'm under the impression that only other dead players get your messages and that all dead players hear voicecom from dead players, is this right?

As far as I'm aware, yes, it is.

um, i dont think this is right. when a marine is hiding in a vent at the end of the game, he can talk to the dead people and they can talk to him

There is nothing like death in NS, just...downtime.

Never noticed it. I've openly talked to the opposing team with "say" during endgames.

    erm no.

People can talk to each other wether they are dead or not.

Unless every single NS server Ive ever been on ever has a plugin that changes the default.

Why would it be any other way?

Interesting how one's perception is shaped by one's expectations. I play this game for longer than anyone here, and never noticed...

Anyone on your team can hear you talk when you are dead. Anyone can hear anyone else at any time if sv_alltalk is set to 1.

Another small thing that I dont think many people noticed was the fact that voicecomm messages now get sent during the countdown beeps that start the game. Believe it or not, but pre-b6, all that spaming you did on your mic about whos the comm, whos going where, whos doing what, etc, was never heard by anyone.

If this is a bug, don't fix it. Hiding as a marine is a lot funnier if you can hear your dead teammates all cheering you on.

I do use Ventrilo. For clanning. Which I do, every single night.

What Im talking about is general pubbage pre-b6. Last time I checked, every pub NS server didnt have a Ventrilo server to go along with it, and even if it did, it doesnt automagically separate Aliens/Marines, nor does it automagically forcefully connect and setup the Ventrilo client so that it can even work in the first place.

Haha. I only just remembered about this post and dug it up again; funny how no consensus was actually reached in the end.

Let's try this again, then: does it depend on server settings, if so which?

no... death has no effect on who can/can't hear you.
  • GoldenGolden Join Date: 2004-09-01 Member: 31169Members, NS1 Playtester, NS2 Playtester, NS2 Map Tester, WC 2013 - Silver, NS2 Community Developer
Your team can hear you no matter what with +voicerecord or say_team. Everyone can hear you at any time when you use say unless you're in spectator or the ready room.

Wow it's funny because I'm pretty sure being dead or alive doesn't matter, yet sometimes I have the impression that while dead I can't talk to the living.

This is as it should be (the way it is).

NS doesn't need odd restrictions on communications. I really think having the dead talking helps the game a lot. Considering they'd only have to wait, what, ten seconds to say what they would have said while dead anyway...

It'd quickly become a nuisance, and wouildn't help the game. IMO
