Not sure. I think it's like a toolbar.

Every time you use google, they are spying on you. Every time you read your gmail account, google is spying on you. Every time you use groups.google.com, google is spying on you. Every time you use news.google.com, google is spying on you. Every time you use images.google.com, google is spying on you....

Oh and web accelerators are basically proxies that further compress images/documents/text so you download them faster. On dial up you can definitely see improved performance when viewing web pages. If you have broadband, it would probably be more of a nuisance than anything else.

all search engines "spy" on you... but i think its more in a ad-ware sense where they will target different ads based on your search\viewing habits

Its the toolbar ones that come latched onto programs that i really hate though

seems like every search engine has got one now

no... the significance of this one is that private pages viewed by any one with google web accellerator get cached on googles massive servers - the content of those servers get scanned when ever any one does a google search

Also, if you read their terms & conditions - any page you view with google accelerator, as stated before, gets cached onto their machines. Any thing stored on those machines essentially become the property of google... you look at a private email? google gets a copy that they own. you look at your online finances... so does google. you look at privte threads on a forum... so does google.

Just because google isn't selling you a dodgy OS doesn't mean it's not a power hungry money grabbing firm like some others more commonly hated out there....

I don't have any problem with money grabbing firms that constantly please me with near-perfect products that don't cost me any money at all, with impeccable service every time.

    Maybe its just me.

There's a thread about this in Off-Topic, if anyone cares. The biggest problem with Web Accelerator is that after one person views a page and it is cached on their server, someone else going to that page will get the same cached version. If it's the main page for a forum, then they will get a page saying they are logged in as a different user. I don't know if it actually gave you access to stuff the other user could use, but clearly it's a problem. I believe someone mentioned in Off-Topic that you have to have Web Accelerator disabled to log in to this forum.
