Broadway Shows (or Reasonable Facsimiles)

Tell us the best 1 you've seen and where
Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Weber, Times Union Center for the Performing Arts in Jacksonville, Fl.

The chandolier itself was reason enough to see this classic. My wife at the time coerced me into reading the book, so the play slightly disappointed me in that respect, but it and the music were spectatular.

Runner Up: Fiddler on the Roof at the Alhambra Dinner Theater, a long long time ago.

I rather liked "The Lion King". I mean, what they did with that was just brilliant.

But I haven't seen too many broadway shows. Musicals, I've seen a few, shows that were on broadway, not so much.

The Beauty and the Beast was another excellent play. Oddly enough, I never saw the movie or paid any attention to it until I saw the show (yeah, all my kids are grown).

Burnt Piano in the Centaur Theatre (Montreal, QC), followed by Wade in the Water (Same place, and it's still showing if anyone is passing through Montreal and wants to stop and see it.)

I saw Les Miserables in New York (but don't remember exactly where) May of 2001. Effin' incredible.

Was going to try and work out Spamalot tickets when it opened in Chicago, but it fell through

I caught "Glengarry Glen Ross" at a local theatre here in Madison, WI. I'm a huge fan of David Mamet's work. "Glengarry" is not a traditional theatrical play. It's set in a modern real estate agency and employs gritty real-life language. If you get a chance, check out the movie, which casts Al Pacino, Jack Lemon, Ed Harris, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, and Alan Arkin among others. I read today it's also making a new run on Broadway.

I've never seen any play live. I'm not a fan of musicals. I've tried to sit through plays on television, and haven't found them entertaining. The one play/musical I like is this version of Sweeney Todd.

Musicals are like operas ... sometimes it just takes a while to cultivate a taste for them (I have yet to for opera, although I enjoy the likes of Sara Brightman and Andre Bocelli immensely).

Certainly we have more culturally enriched in the NS community?!?!?

    best one?

    that is hard.

As KFS Said, Les Miss is great (and probably my favorite)

    Other things that I loved:
Cats (the show ran so long for a friken reason, it ricks!)
    Chicago
Stomp (off BWay, but what ever)
Thwack (again, off BWay) Mime... with sound.
The Compleate Works of Shakespeare Abridged (off Bway, great for shakesperians and nonshakesperians alike) (angain off BWay)
And lot of great productions of Shakespeare (off Bway, duh )

    Cats, all the way.
West Side Story came a close second.
Both were running for quite a while at the Norwich Theatre.

Mum reckons that Starlight Express was good.

Woah no way. You liked those?

Cats has no plot or point. My theatre professor rants all day about how it was invented to lure in tourists and foreigners looking for the "New York Experience" rather than a good musical.

And Starlight Express was just... Lord I don't even know what Andrew Lloyd Weber was thinking. Take your train people on rollerskates elsewhere.

His good musicals ended with Evita I think.

I'm a sucker for whenever a company performs "Swan Lake". I think it may have to do with the venue where I go to see it.

Philadelphia's Academy of Music is both a celebrated historical landmark and a current focus of cultural life in the city. Opened in 1857, the Academy is the oldest grand opera house in the United States still used for its original purpose.

    Absolutely stunning.

Now, many performances are being shown in the new Kimmel Center. The Kimmel Center is just a minutes walk from the Academy. This new venue takes everything we know about Acoustics and combines it with today's technology. The result is you can experience the 'perfect' environment for every piece of music.

How do they achieve it? The Kimmel's walls and ceiling are all electronically controlled. For every piece the entire building can be automatically changed to represent the ideal acoustical arrangement. I have even seen them readjust the walls during a live performance between pieces. An audiophiles dream.

I've never gotten to see a broadway show...

I'd really like to see Hitler On Ice though. Its a broadway musical/ice thingy put on by Mel Brooks. Though I dunno if he's doing it anymore, that was a few years back...

The Producers. Fricking hysterical. Springtime for Hitler was a stroke of pure genius.

I saw The Producers at the Pantages a year or two ago with Jason Alexander and Martin Short. They were incredible in it. I live in a cultural cess-pool, so I don't get to see a lot of musicals. I wish I could go see Wicked at the Pantages this summer, but I don't have the money.

Um, I guess the next facsimile I will see is Sondheim's A Little Night Music. At my high school. Because I'm in it.
