Laser Sights On Guns

I was playing on one of the beta test servers, and they have the laser sights activated.

Now I was playing Aliens and the Lasers really do help us out. It was quite easy to tell how many and from what direction the enemy was coming, the lasers gave it all away. I think they look cool, but tactically they are really quite a hindrance to the marines.

When Playing the marines we would usually run to the waypoint with the knife activated so as not to give our position away.
Switching to a gun quickly after a suprise attack is a pain though.

I found that they lagged behind the actuall crosshair position and increased pings. More of an annoyance then a feature to me.

This isn't related, but nice name. Do you use that when you play too? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I commented on this on another thread (which I can't find) and Flayra dismissed the 'beta server' notion, which I called the lanvancouver servers as well since they list 1.02b3 and such when you log in.

Flayra seemed to suggest the lasers where specific to the lanvancouver servers, not NS's main code.

    thx _nny.

It was on the lanVancouver server.

And I hope the lasers don't stay around.

It would be good if that ment that Flayra is not inclined to put them in officially.

ps. if they were gonna stay, maybe make them reveal cloaked aliens... or something usefull.

wots so annoying about lasers i guess the fact u can become easily sighted is one thing but if ur a long way away its actually useful

The crosshairs already do that job , I see no point in giving yourself away and lagging the server just to look cool whilst you move around as a Marine .

Plus the fact that the lasers were really laggy. They wern't useful at all, and gave away the marines postion and orientation very easily, espicially in dark areas. While it may look "cool" it has not functional counterpart, and actually harms the marines.

More importantly, how in the hell is the laser that visible? Wouldn't you just be able to see the dot somewhat like a laser pointer? Unless there is quite a bit of dust or some kind of like particle in the ships, I doubt that there would even be a beam.

Well, there is the nanostuff and bacteria floating around to illuminate the beam, but I can't see why we would need the beam itself actually there instead of just a dot.

I can see how a laser would be useful if NS was REAL... when you wouldn't have a crosshair besides the iron sights and you could aim with just your arms and not your whole body. Of course, if NS was real you'd have a lot more to worry about than being picky about your aim. I can also see how a simple dot and an HUD crosshair would be useful in the game, because it would allow you to judge distance (and to some degree movement) in dark areas. However, the pistol is the only gun thats really dot-accurate (who in his right mind would put a laser sight on a shotgun?) so as an aid to actual accuracy it's useless.

AND HOW COME NOBODY THINKS MY NAME IS COOL? <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Of course the laser lags dude, it's server-side, not client side like the crosshair. Where the laser is is where (to the server) you're really aiming.
