Will A Cyberbrain Make Education Irrelevant?

i bring my notes to the exam in my brain
I was watching some Ghost in the Shell (TV series) when it suddenly came to me. If the cyberbrain technology was made a reality, won't education be obsolete. Because all you need to do is to just add in new information into your brain just like how you install software in your computer.

Although I think education will just be radically changed to adjust to cyberbrains. Because not all knowledge can be learnt by just reading the fact about it.

i.e. Programming. You can read books and books about it. But you will never get the grips of it until you actually write actual code.

Exam would be SOOO much easier with a cyberbrain though. Be like bringing a laptop into the exam room with all the facts you would need.

That kills the fun of wasting ~16 years of your life in underfunded schools and dictator-esque teachers. Not to mention the fun kids you get to play with, and experiences you go through attending school.

...However that would be cool. Though I can imagine there would also be malovent intent with this as well. False information and whatnot. *shrug*

It would certainly be nice to be able to get all kinds of data in an instant; but what of emotions, idea, and ideals? They could be inserted as well, no? I don't want my opinion told to me. As bad as the drudgery gets, I'd prefer to be able to take regular classes and form my own opinions, because even if the information presented today is incorrect, there are ways to learn around it rather than simply accepting it because the gov't uploaded it to you. And remember, one of the very things that happens in GITS is people get hacked, their memories and such altered. I believe in one episode someone was killed in a car accident because someone hacked his brain and he was blinded, but I haven't watched GITS in a while (great series BTW).

However, if there were some kind of non-UN international body that strictly regulated it and had academics from all countries and backgrounds that vetted the information in the uploads, I might consider "installing" my data (and nothing more, no ideals or emotions).

In the movie, someone was hacking all these phones because he thought he had a wife, and his lawyer told him that if he hacked this stuff, he would get custody of his kid or something. Then, they told him, and he finally had to come to the realization that his memory had been altered.

The idea of a cyber brain (and body for that matter) is VERY cool.

GitS:SAC pulls up alot of the cool problems that there would be:
    1) The concept of a "Ghost" (youd could call it a soul)
    2) Hacking pople's minds.
    3) The ability to back up your brain.
    4) Switching brains/bodies
    5) How do you define "alive"?

One of my favorite (for interesting factor) eps is the one about the runaway proto type tank. The end is very interesting.

    Also the Tachikomas

I honestly don't know if that's a statement regarding cyberbrains or our current education system. There could be plenty of discussion on both. :P

I think for children (probably up to, oh say, 8th grade) old fashioned education will be the norm. The good part would be that crap like math and history could be downloaded, meanwhile stuff they really do need practice at like English and communication skills and not growing up to be stupid idiots who kill other people can be focused on.

Now what would be really awesome is college class downloading. I suck at math, so I'd love to be able to just download Calculus 3,4, and Number Theory and etc courses into my brain. It'd also be handy for learning a foreign language in a snap, though this is something that would require a lot of practise too.

People shouldn't be too rushed to download everything and finish school while they are 9 years old.. after all once you're done w/ school the alternative is going to work for a living. :P

    [edit]
Oh and there would be a very, very sharp increase in hate crimes as certain religious zealots from various belif systems feel threatened by this surefire sign of the end of the world and feel that the only way to save their soul is to start firebombing hospitals and universities.

Professors would install EMP generators in their testing halls to disable anyone who turns their electric mind on during a test.

well, if it's not your brain, it's not really YOU, is it?
All I'd be willing to have implanted, ever, is a calculator, and a hard drive (it'd be nice to have a photographic memory)

Let's say you're taking a course in something that involves mathematics...
Now you'd still have to be able to work problems, the difference is that they'd all be open-book/open notes. Memory would become less important, because it's stored on a little chip that you can access any time. But it's one thing to know what the equations are, and a completely different thing to understand them.

If anything else was going to be installed I wouldn't accept it. No nano-chip is going to tell ME what to do (or think).

If you could download all the math you ever need to learn and every one learns the same, wouldn't any new forumlas of math ever get invented/calculated? Wouldn't technology stand still or at least develop in a straight line with every one thinking the same?

But in all seriousness, people's minds work differently, so technology wouldn't really be stagnant...but everyone would basically be what we would consider high-school geniuses at the age of 5. However, actual literary works, historical deduction, mathematical advancement and scientific discovery would still be reliant on actual conscious thought (but it would most likely be quicker, since failures and previous experience could be known instantly).
