How Does Commander "hack" Elevators?

Tried this, can't make it work
I understand the commander is supposed to be able to operate doors, elevators, and any thing else a marine can operate. I'm wondering, then, why I watched my poor little men die at the bottom of a lift I couldn't move. I saw a special icon when hovering the mouse over switches - a picture of a hand on a switch - but clicking or hitting "e" didn't work. Was this a fluke? Is there some requisite I'm missing (e.g., a live marine must close to the switch)? How does this work?

    Right click.

If that didn't work, they jammed the elevator with turrets, making it impossible to move.

when im commanding i find it quicker to get out my seat, run to the elevator/door in question, open it, and run back to my seat again.

Possibly this is because noone ever follows my farking orders!

One time I was able to left click on a door switch and the door opened...five minutes later I did the same to try to close the door and it didn't work...

It is supposed to be left click, but it has never worked for me before. Right click is reserved for orders.

I tried left and right click on a clear, unjammed elevator, but no luck. I might have bound a key wrong or something, but it still seems kind of buggy.

We encountered that bug last night. Our CO couldn't move the elevator on ns_bast. To resolve this problem, just click on a factory or armory, and it sould be fine - at least it worked for us
