Weird Lag..

Well this started happening today, everytime I see a marine or alien (depending on which side I am) my ping jumps to like 300 from <100..this doesnt usually happen because when I'm lagging the gameplay is still smooth just my ping is really high.
Anyways, ill be at ~100 ping and doing fine, until I see an enemy then my ping jumps to 300+ and the game gets really choppy (players start warping everywhere), and it's generally unplayable. I also noticed that my server refresh takes a little longer than usual.
I could wait until tomorrow and see if it's still like this but until then, does anyone have any suggestions?

that happens to me sometimes, i personally think its the server that you load on too, some servers are better then, so i think your just lucky enought to find those bad lagg servers(i mean there being filled pass limit cuasing lagg) but who know, im usually wrong

Check your rates, having too low of rates can cause ping spikes.

    What should they be at?

I also noticed that it takes considerably longer to connect to servers so I don't think it's my rates..maybe my internet or something? but i dont think anything has changed with that..

Ah, I found the problem (after reading in the tech support forum)

My Steam internet setting was at Modem 14.4K, which was most likely the problem..I set it higher and adjusted my rates and now it works fine
    Thanks to those who helped
