The Origin Of Bunny Hopping

<div class="IPBDescription">Is this where the term originated from?</div> <a href='http://everything2.com/index.pl?node=bunny%20hop' target='_blank'>Real Life Bunny Hopping</a>

A Bunny Hop is the act of making a bike jump into the air. Bunny Hops originated as a trick done on a BMX, but have become an essential part of any mountain biker or urban cyclist's skillset, as they provide an easy way to avoid rocks or curbs. Learning how to bunnyhop is a long process. Being confident enough to do it at speed whilst dodging a bus will take longer still.

wasn't it a dance back in the day?

if not, I'm sure it was used earlier on, bunnies are old <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think the term 'bunny hop' actually comes from bunnies... you know, small furry animals with the long ears which hop around(aka rabbits).

the term originaly comes from a bunny and the way it hops... this term was then later used to describe other things... but obviously the term originaly came from a bunny hopping

*Edit* Arrowhead typed just about the same thing as me, right as i was typing

When evading predators rabbits (bunnies) use their agility (hopping side to side) to get away. Once BHing was found in computer games I assume it was given the name as from a 3rd person perspective it looks similar.

    we indeed really hop. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

More important, which freak went on to think to try moving when jumping, strafing and moving the damn mouse to the point of strafing. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

IIRC, the US Army taught recruits how to bunnyhop in real life, incase they needed to dodge bullets. They also learned to shoot while doing so.

    really? 16 years? AMAZING!

Quick, someone tell the bunnies they didn't create it!

@status quo: He means real bunnyhopping, as in side to side rapid hopping. IRL you don't gain forward momentum when doing it, but it can be used to avoid gunfire for short periods of time at long ranges.

What is this... Alcohol... You speak of?

Bunnyhopping had it's origins in quake 1 and TF. The reason that bunnyhopping is so accepted today (and possibly why it was included in the HL engine as a "feature" of the physics engine) is because the creators of Q1 and TF in general never made any attempt to fix this issue because they either couldn't or wouldn't, and what was previously a physiscs exploit got accepted as a skill.

And the rest, of course, is history.

Alcohol, specifically ethanol, is a product in the fermentation of glucose, or sugar. Almost any photosynthetic plant can be used in the production, although traditionally, especially grapes and various grains are popular, such as barley or wheat, though it is very much agriculturally influenced. For example, rice wine, or sake, is popular in Japan and honey was used by the vikings to produce mead. The potato also became a popular base for alcohol during the late 17th/early 18th century as it was easy to grow.

    Redfords right man.

This is a traditional old school skill.

It went passed down from Quake to Quake 2 and in Quake 2 it became popular. Most quake2 players started playing HL. HL uses the same engine as quake2 and thus B-hopping was taken on.

And tbh game bhopping is different to ns bhopping. In ns you gain way more speed bhopping then in Quake or even HL DM.

Did Flayra make better air accel for aliens or something?

I think it's because the aliens are travelling so fast that they naturally get a big bonus from bunnyhopping. Gorges don't bunnyhop that fast. Plus, skills like leap and blink encourage bunnyhopping as a way to retain speed, so if you see someone bhopping really fast, they could be conserving momentum from a leap or blink.

I thought b-hopping was just left in intentionally for the aliens, while restricted for the rines. There is no difference in the acceleration. Only that marines slow down quite a bit after a jump while aliens don't.
