Well, lots of people ask questions about it, and I figured if I could think up an excuse for why things are set up the way they are at the start of the game, and it works with the backstory, I might as well give it a go.

Ask me why the guns look like world-war-1 era weapons. Ask me why they don't use sniper rifles or super-high caliber, more accurate, more powerful, longer range weapons like we see in lower-tech mods like CS! Go on, ask me why NS doesn't have that damn acronym gun in it!

I have an answer for everything!

ok, Why was the earth created and why don't they use high caliber weapons?

Gah! Calm down man.

Actually, most of these questions have been asked (and answered "lengthily" ((is that even a word?)) ) in previous forum posts. And please, don't start up anything about weapon designs, our beloved Bathroom Monkey has been taking that up the wazoo since the first screnshots of the LMG were released.

Well, if you must, I'll indulge you.

It seems a common misconception in Natural Selection is that the Aliens should be the ones attacking, and the Marines defending, when the backstory and environment dictates otherwise. The TSA are trying to cleanse an alien stronghold, and the aliens must defend themselves.

Poor aliens, noone ever thinks of you as the good guys.

How do you make something YOUR home fair and square, if it was originally a man-built machine? DUH!

OK, you live on a space ship (ns_nancy). One day some aliens just mysteriously show up and take over. Who's home is it still?...Thought so...

Eat.

First of, you say "Duh" to Fam one more time I'll be forced to tear out your jugular vein.

Secondly, the Kharaa DID earn their newfound homes fair and square- They killed all onboard humans and colonized it. Theres no such thing as "Oh, I'm sorry, did YOU guys build this ship?" to a semi-sentient alien race fighting for survival.

I guess it would really depend on if there were humans there in the first place or not. I mean, if no-one is there, then that wouldn't really be considered human propery anymore because no one is there.

So... If I'm not in my house someone can just waltz in and take it? Thanks for warning me.

It is safe to assume the army and marines used AWPs, or more advanced versions of them, and they just plain didn't work.

Just as the Kharaa's specially strengthened, sharpened-to-a-single-cell teeth and acidic saliva can allow them to eat through metal and armor plating, so I'd immagine their hides are impervious to normal gunfire. A TSA LMG probably has more stopping power than anything the army has ever used.

Also, Fronteisman weapons are jurry-rigged solutions that were probably invented on the feild, and built using older weapons as a base, because the parts are bigger and less intricate, so they'ed be quicker and easier to design, modify, and mess around with.

Also, the side-feed cartridge on the LMG might have been designed by some savvy TSA engineer who just thought old-fashioned weapons were really, really cool. Remember, these are space geeks we're talking about, here.

Bottom line: Both the Kharra and the Frontiersmen are using weapons and abilities lightyears beyond any other forces in the universe at the time Natural Selection Takes place. They can create structures from raw compounds, adapt to what opposition they encounter, and augment themselves with new weapon and abilities. The fact that one side uses technology and the other biology to accomplish this is inconsequential. They are balanced against each other in potential, but either side alone probably outclasses anything else humaity has at its disposal.

In reply to Silencer: No, but If a tiger were to come in and eat you all then make your house his/her den, there wouldn't be very much commotion on who the house belongs to, would there?
• Duck_FootDuck_Foot Join Date: 2002-11-12 Member: 8306Members
Who in there right minds would leave a space ship or a space center unmanned? They'd be dumber than rocks to JUST leave it without anyone around, that would be like leaving a SR-71 spy plane in china unmanned.
• WarpZoneWarpZone Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6264Members
Ah! Yes, see, in MY mind, the house would belong to me. Or to the bank, if I died with outstanding loans. The bank can't reposess it, of course, with a tiger living in it.

But to the tiger, he doesn't know it's a house, and he doesn't know anything about property or ownership. To him, it's just a nice cave he found to live in, with soft, fleshy animals with weak claws in it for food. (Natural Selection, indeed!) And heaven help anyone else who intrudes upon the tiger's new home, the rectangular cave!

Both sides think they are the good guys. So you can see how the message "Cleanse the intruders!" makes sense, and how people who play as alien all the time would take their side.

Also, if this house of ours were built in a jungle, you could say that the humans intruded on the tiger's home first.

Gah! Warpzone definatly put my insane ramblings in better words, but I like the effect just saying "If a tiger were to come in and eat you all then make your house his/her den, there wouldn't be very much commotion on who the house belongs to, would there?" seems to have on a room.

yeah, he would have a nice long life in my house, which would last about as long as it takes for animal control to get there and fill it with holes/tranqs, guess ownership is decided by whoever has the bigger gun

Which is exactly the point of my and Warps joint ramblings: whoever is stronger (bigger gun or bigger mouth) owns the house. Hence "Natuaral-Selection".

Yeah. See, we're talking about some sort of mythical jungle super-tigers, here, and houses built in the jungles far away from civilization. Animal control *tried* to step in, and they are now kitty litter. The zookeepers and the good people of PETA also failed. Thus, enter the Fronteirsmen, the new type of anti-tiger gurellia fighters!

Okay, the metaphor's starting to wear a bit thin, now, so let's stop talking about it. I don't think I can think of any analogy for Sentries or Hives or Resource Nodes.

The same reason the bacteria can't make all the marines die as soon as they breathe the air.

Nano/bacteria-gridlock.

It's even in the manual that only very small objects, such as ammo and health packs, can be transported long distanced intact. For everything else, they just send a thin metal skeleton to serve as a blueprint, and the marines have to use their personal clouds of nanos to actually build the structures.
