seriously, why hasn't this topic been moved to a private section in the bug reports forum yet? that is common protical for exploitive things like this.

As of right now, gl_max_size is a public command that anyone can use in game. Just because it has the potential to be an exploit shouldnt disregard it from discussion on removing said exploit. The competitive forum is a great place to discuss and discover exploits such as this, because most competitive players are more interested in tailoring the game to their advantage vs a more atmospheric experience (meaning more competitive players have tried altering their config, thus know more about what changes what), but Im just generalizing here...

Id appreciate any help in getting more info regarding client side exploitive commands such as gl_max_size. If we create a big enouph stink about it, Im sure things will get changed.

You forgot all the tracer commands that control the color, size, speed, and orientation of bullet tracers.

Those can give an advantage to alien players since they can make bullets more obvious.

So let me see. You need to restart ns so that these will work. But that means you will need to leave the server and take another screenshot. CD blocks this command up to a minimum of 8...

That's the problem though, you dont need to restart NS.

im gonna go to some public games and try out maxsize.

in my opinion this should probably be minimum 128 as others have said.

It doesn't matter if it is minimum of 128 since you can get the same effect with using non multiples of 64 I believe.

wrong, i tried it, nothing happened on map changes or reconnects. you need to restart ns to make it work. this is why cal needs screenshots, this is why CD is required for cal. this isnt an issue in cal because they have worked around it. if you want to be secure when you play in pubs, play on CD required servers

I do not believe these to be exploitive commands. Unless you can give a convincing arguement, Im going to assume you were being cynical in helping me out.

The rest of the commands listed, however, I either agree or am not familiar with what the command does. Id like some feedback on these commands if anyone is interested.

Here are the ones I know:

stopsound: Stops all .wav sounds like footsteps, gunfire and such. Does not affect .mp3 background music.

gamma: In-game gamma
brightness: in game brightness
texgamma: the brightness applied only to textures. This is like lightgamma; the higher the value the darker the texture. This is not exploitive, as it is already set to 0 by default - the brightest setting. (Actually, I want to thank MK for finding this - IMO it should be set to 1-2 by default for a 'darker' feel without the map actually being darker.)
lightgamma: controls how bright light sources are. (I believe this only applies to map-based light sources, not things like flashlights.)

gl_monolights: Removes shadows. It's already blocked, but yes this could be exploitive.

ex_interp, cl_updaterate, cl_cmdrate: These are settings for your web connection. They are perfectly valid to change, and can make gameplay much smoother when set appropriately.

tracerred 1
tracergreen 0
tracerblue 0
traceralpha 1
tracerspeed 6000
tracerlength 1
traceroffset "100"
These commands all affect the tracers ballistic weapons have. They are no more explotive than a good set of headphones.

r_drawviewmodel: This turns v_weapon models off, such as the skulk's mouth. Already blocked.

yeah, then you have to take screenshots again. read the whole thread, CD blocks this and its REQUIRED for CAL matches, so the issue with gl_max_size and CAL is irrelevant

Well, I was playing on a pub server with gl_max_size 8. And, about 6 people went cloack, and i spotted them so easily. This should be fixed, if its possible.

I still wonder if it wouldn't be possible to make a demo and then take screenshots from the demo..?

However, if netgraph(I don't know if it is) was enforced on the screenshots this would not work.

I don't think it would work. You have to show the scoreboard in your screenshots , and the scoreboard looks messed up in demos.

honestly it's a bigger problem than you would think. i mean it's not like we all stare at the screen without blinking or hold down the scoreboard for 10-15 minutes before a match starts. usually in matches the players just get their ss's as soon as there are 6 on each team and then just wait for both ready's. it is quite possible for someone to quickly retry without the other team noticing and even if they did notice i don't specifically recall an instance where WE (as a team) forced someone to retake screenshots. on top of that, it would probably be difficult to tell if the reconnecting player actually took a new screenshot or not given nothing else had changed on the scoreboard after the retry.

There's ns team "blocked" and there's actually blocked as in people actually can't use it anymore if they care to try. This goes for far more commands than just r_drawviewmodel.

thats the main use for CD anyway, not to stop cheats because it's easy to get around but to stop **** cvars like gl_monolights

god forbid that the ns team remove the "stopsound" command. you ever been on a map where someone screws a door up and the sound loops over and over again, and you can make more instances of the same sound which eventually either make hl crash or make the sound so loud, the map is unbearable to play in that area.

stopsound is a helpful command, not an exploit.

Stopsound is useful. It's just that at this point it can also be used to remove certain ambient sounds to make hearing easier.

This is also a problem with Hostile Intent. Every map has a basic ambient sound that is supposed to cover a persons footsteps when walking. By using Stopsound you can then hear a person moving, as slow as possible, like they are running.

In essence it's up to a mapper. Stop using .wav files for ambience!
