Wierd Lag Problem

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!
Ok, so here's my problem:
I have a DSL line, which gets a stable 1222 kbit down, 244 kbit up. I have a dedicated server which is a 1.4 GHZ amd with 384 mb ram. The only thing that the computer is running is a dedicated server for NS in HLDS. Now i'm on my other computer joining through lan (I have a linksys BEFSR41 router). I'll have myself and 7 wan players, and everything will be smooth, everyone pings about 70, except me who pings 10ish. Every 15 or 20 minutes, Everyone who is joining through the WAN will have their ping skyrocket to about 3 or 4 thousand, but mine will stay around 10. Everyone's ping will stay high for about 20 seconds, then everyone's ping will return to normal. It's very frusturating, and I don't know what the problem is. I have no file sharing programs open, and I am not downloading anything. If someone could help me, I would greatly appretiate it.

i doubt it, because i can support up to 12 users, but this can happen even if i only have 6 or 8 in there... my upload is 244kilobit

try setting the max rate kinda low
  • MellonpoprMellonpopr Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2304Members
while 240k might be enough for your x amount of players, your maxplayers is set too close to your bandwith upload cap. try setting sv_maxrate 4000 that'll keep clients from hogging the bandwith. of course if this helps and you up the max players you'll be right back in the same boat

thanks for the suggestions, i'll try setting the rate down to 4k. Someone suggested a weak dsl line but i don't think that could be the problem because I live only 4 thousand feet from the box and It's very stable. If i set the rate to 4000 then will anyone who's rate is at 7500 experience lag?

no, they wont get lag but if their rate is set to like 20000 and your server is limiting the rate to 4000 they might get choke. There is an amdin mod plugin that supposedly forces every client to set their rate to whatever you specify.

It might be the same plugin or maybe a different one but you tell the plugin how much bandwidth you have and it'll automatically set client rates according to how many players are there etc..

I have plenty of bandwidth now so I'm using sv_maxrate 0 which is unlimited. I used to do sv_maxrate 3500 and 4000 when I had 250k upload on the ole cable

Alright, here's what I think i'm going to do: I'm going to upgrade the router firmware, reinstall half-life, install the half life update, install natural selection, install the v1.02 server update. Assuming that no computer on my network us using bandwidth, if I set the sv_maxrate to 4000, and set the max players to 10 do you think that I'd had anymore problems? We're working with 1222 kbit down and 244 kbit up here and it is a stable connection. Thanks a lot this is a big help!

leave the router firmware alone.. when I goto anything newer than 1.39 clients get dropped within 2-5 minutes
1.39 is still the best firmware for our router (been there done that several times with different versions)

yes 10 player with a sv_maxrate will probably fix you up, the rest is just a waist of time. Your HL and NS are fine. This is a bandwidth problem not a game problem

alright, i'll leave the router firmware as it is, but i was wondering if the server computer should have DMZ turned on or port fowarding, which do you do? and what about all the filter options like ipsec and stuff like that? Do you think i should use a rate of 4000? If so, will people's pings be a lot higher? I really appretiate your help.

dmz = wide open to the net .. no security but no hassle of forwarding ports (I use this when I'm having problems to make sure that a port isn't configured wrong)

port forwarding = security but you have to know what ports to forward and where (I couldn't tell you the ports for HL off the top of my head)

4000 is a decent setting 3500 is a little low and can cause an increase in ping/choke. I had my cs server set at 3500-4000 to pack in a few more players and 9/10 players didn't notice any difference.

as for the rest of the router settings, leave them defaults unless your isp told you otherwise

    good luck !

    cool , thanks cracker !

are there more for ASE etc.. ? I know some games need more ports for things like that and gamespy arcade (those peeps should be banned on sight) hehe

It is my understanding that those are VAC support ports. But i could be wrong. i'm not that into HLDS workings. I'm a networking guy.

I'm not positive but I don't think it's VAC ports. Those ports were required for HLDS long before VAC was born

I believe that both of those are for WON auth servers.

Thank you. but you know what? I've NEVER had to open those because to run a DoD server before. why is that?
