A Way To Have Alien Flashlight Turn On Auto?

aeroripperaeroripper Join Date: 2005-02-25 Member: 42471NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Constellation
I was wondering if there was a way to turn on the alien flashlight automatically when i spawn instead of having to hit the flashlight key everytime.

I was thinking of using the uparrow so whenever i start moving it will flip on the flashlight but then change the uparrow to just +foward so it won't keep turning the flashlight on and off.

any help would be appreciated!

uuh, I would stick with just hitting F right as you spawn, before you even hit the ground. No reason to get overly complicated

    alias +flashmove "impulse 100; wait; +forward"
alias -flashmove "-forward; wait; bind uparrow +forward"

    alias resetflash "bind uparrow flashmove"
    bind x resetflash

in your config bind flashmove to uparrow (don't know if it's actually called that)

then when you are dead and are waiting to respawn, just hit the key to resetflash so when you spawn in flashlight is automatically turned on

Or an alternative method, have it so whenever you move the flashlight is turned on, when you stop moving the flashlight turns off, put this in your config

    alias +flashmove "impulse 100; wait; +forward"
alias -flashmove "-forward; wait; impulse 100"
    bind uparrow "+flashmove"

    It didn't work

i added it into the userconfig.cfg (doesn't it load it on game startup then?)

and i hit forward (uparrow) and it didn't work

EDIT: hmm, i wonder if there is even a way to make it when you die you can have it "resetflash"

I just find it useful like when your hive is under attack and you forget to hit F in the heat of the battle and its hard to see the marines :-/

they're all scripts, and as such may not work on servers that have BS enabled. This is the kind of thing that scripters complain about not being able to do because of BS.

Actually, I think that's still possible even with blockscripts on...

    no

no + commands in an alias and no 2 commands in a bind, or atleast 2 commands with +'s in them. im pretty sure those arent mp_bs1 friendly.

is it really that hard to hit one key on spawn?

First off, perhaps a mod should turf this thread over to I&S since it really belongs there.

Secondly, I agree with this suggestion and would like to see an option added to the NS advanced options menu "Flashlight always on?" which woulod default the flashlight to on.

Lastly, I'd like to see the marine flashlight changed so that it doesn't light up the marine that has the flashlight on. This seems to be a key reason why people don't like it, and I don't see the point. (especially given how effective the alien flashlight is, and how if aliens have their flashlight on it won't make a difference anyway)

The key here is that with this change we could have more maps that are 'dark' without people complaining that they can't see. This would give a big boost to what makes NS great.... ATMOSPHERE.

Anything that will improve atmosphere in NS is something I believe we should embrace.

darkness does not equal atmosphere. i dont understand why this is so difficult. i bet if you suddenly "forgot" everything you ever knew about ns and downloaded the game again it'd be pretty damn atmospheric.

the point is, atmosphere wears off after youve been playing for a certain time, and adding new "more atmospheric" (read: darker) maps just frustrates people.

True, but darkness has a factor in strategy, and if a mapper intentionally includes a dark corner, there is probably a strategic reason he made it dark... moreso even then an atmospheric one.

Many of the most atmoshperic maps aren't that dark anyways, there are tonnes of other ways to do it. Atmosphere is niether the only reason why dark spots are put on maps, nor is darkness the only way to do atmosphere. As far as I am concerned they are all but compleatly unrelated.

The lesson here is not to get too stoned before you play.

I never said it was. What I suggested was that any attempt at using darkness to add atmosphere on a map is usually nullified by people who amp their video settings to negate it. This is usually because they find it hard to locate/attack enemies, and 'flashlight' options are not ideal. If we could eliminate that 'restriction' we could encourage mappers to use light levels to enhance the atmosphere on maps.

Darkness is just one aspect that can be used to enhance atmosphere, it's not the only one.

I don't know why, but my flashlight is like the hl one: it's like I'm carrying a flashlight, not a lantern. It's kinda annoying, because I can't light up dark areas well, but it's great for looking into vents.
