Silent Walking

<div class="IPBDescription">walk should be silent!!!</div> When walking as Marine or Alien you should be completely silent! I think it does make it a bit quiter when you walk, but still, it defeats the purpose of being able to do so.

Ignoring the sarcasm tag.. I think it should make marines like 90% quiet..

Yea... lets make us pay for silence when the marines can do it all day long... what would that really get them anyways? Especially if they were parasited? Then ya'll would **obscenity** about skulks having a "free" silence too and tearing it up!

I dont think they can be very silent in those big clanky space boots.

On another note, when a marine steps on alien infestation, his boots should make squishy noises.

    Planned eventually.

I would think that quieting down a marine's foot steps would enable marines to go off on their own more. When an alien hears a single marine stepping, they die quickly. If several marines stay together, they become a strong force and the noise doesn't matter as much. The stepping noise helps teamwork.

Why is it that some of the Khaara(Gorge for sure) are wearing galoshes?" *squish* *squish* *squish* *squish* *squish* *squish* Are the Khaara covered with liquid(litterally drenched) or what? I can understand that they should make a alien footstep sound but *squish* *squish*?

    perhaps padded feet?

I think the squishy walking sounds are to reenforce the idea that we are fleshy, gooey biological creatures, made entirely out of sentient bacteria, covered with pus from recent gestation and totally *foreign* to this nice, clean, shiny metal spaceship.

Plus, it adds intense flavor to the marine perspective when you hear some *disturbingly moist* sounds coming from around the corner for the first time. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yeah, i could never figure out why the skulk, <i>who is walking on pointy pieces of bone</i>, makes a squishy step sound.

What I dont understand is why walking does not make you silent, but crouching does. And marines can sneak up on aliens, they sure get surprised too =p

    EDIT: typos

Look at the clodhoppers marines wear. A heavy armor guy would sound like a clydesdale walking on it's back legs.

Because it's built on the HL engine, and they forgot to take out the stealth mode feature of the HEV suit. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    i would guess walking should make the marines 70-95% more silent.. and then let the aliens have a walk button as well.... but when u upgrade the silent thing for aliens it allows them to run full speed goings 100% silent.. that would be fair.. although i'm not sure why ANYONE would get the silent upgrade <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> lol.... <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo-->

I get the silent upgrade.. GREAT for skulks.
lerks and above I use adreline instead.
Differnt aliens do better with different upgrades.

The thing with alien silence is they get to move full-speed, with marine crouching (or walking if they change it in the next release) the marine is moving at like 40% speed... and marines are slow to begin with (and very noisy @ full speed).

And SSSHHHH about the crouch-walk silence... its really nifty and I dont want the devs to put in some stupid noise when I use crouch-walk to sneak up on a fade! Heh heh
  • Shrike3OShrike3O Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6678Members, Constellation
Yeah, once you've got a movement turret up, it costs all of... two RP? to move silently at FULL SPEED until you die? I weep for you, truly... meanwhile the marines have to waddle around in a crouch whenever they want to be quiet...

I'm going to have to agree with an earlier post; marines should not have quiet footsteps. This is a team mod on the marine's side, and it encourages marines to stick together so that they don't die as quickly. Plus nothing scares the **obscenity** out of a skulk like hearing many, many booted feet on the other end of a hallway.

As for aliens, I think the sounds are quite acceptable already, and they *CAN* walk completely silent. I love ninja <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> , "The ultimate in solo marine deterrance TM"

    pardon the grammar

Unless you have legs like a chicken any human is strong enough to slowly set down his boots if they weighed even 50lbs and talk quietly.

In all honestly, what's the point of walking for either side? Skulks still make noise, marines still make noise. Who would bother with it?

I don't understand what you're getting at. The post is about suggesting that the walk should be silent, giving either side the opportunity for a shot at the element of suprise.
  • RavlenRavlen Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7713Members
I mean currently, as it stands walking is useless. If it made marines silent, then it would be useful to marines, but right now there's no point. Marines are gonna make noise, so you might as well run instead of walk.

I dont think walking should be silent. Walking in real life isnt silent so why should it be any different in NS? Silence while moving IRL is accomplished not thru walking but by creeping. Yea I know NS isnt a reality game but still.....

Are you retarted? I just said <b>THE POST IS ABOUT MARINES SHOULD <u>BE ABLE</u> TO WALK SILENT!</b>

    Teufel Eldritch:

True, a casual walk in real life isn't silent, but you can easily walk much quieter if you please.
