I use a RadeonX800 @ fps_max 125. The card can render frames higher but it's more consistant at 125. (as in it doesn't fluxuate much) I was just wondering if other people notice that the game only feels 'smooth' at either fps_max 60 or 125 with ATI cards. I'm having trouble explaining this and I don't think screenshots would help, however, it's more or less that the game feels and looks smoother at 60 than 70-99 which is kinda odd. Any higher value set after 125 makes everything feel more slow as well...I don't know I've lost my train of thought...
I think HL doesn't show any fps results higher than 100. If your fps is 101-125 i believe its no different than 100. Its just says 125 because HL is this comment was unnecessary.

I'm using a radeon 9800 pro, and I am having some difficulties with my fps. It seems like when I first start playing, I get wicked fps drops. I wouldn't mind if they were consistent, but it goes from 100-30-40-100. It jumps all over the place and I get really really choppy play. I sometimes play ns from a different profile on widows xp than its installed on, could this be the problem?
On topic, I get 100 fps constant when my computer isnt being a bastard.
i feel when the fps are 200 or 300, the game plays smoother than at 100 fps. i also experience fps loss ingame, the 100 - 75 - 50 - 100 - <maxfps>
ati cards dont seem to like rendering e_polys from the hl engine. at 800+ w_polys i can get 250 fps, and on one map, its been up to 2200+ w_polys and i can still maintain above 100 fps.
but if the computer starts rendering e_polys around 2000 - 3000, i get big performance hits.
i got a gefore 5500 with 256 megs of ram, im going to try that card and see if anything changes.
On Daimos: 3-5 fps On other maps: 20-35 fps Celeron 1.7...don't complain about bad fps lol.
What sucks is that I have a pretty good vid card (geforce fx 5500 256MB) however my dad went with the cheap cpu...Oh well, this summer I shall get a job and then build a computer
If I dont have developer 1 on my game feels choppy, and I dont feel like im going the same speeds bhopping. But when dev is on and fps_max 124 it feels smooth as ever

It's not unheard of for people to have inexplicably low FPS in half-life with newer gear(with video cards from nVidia, ATi and on completely random motherboards and soundcards.), though I don't think anyone has a clue why(and I don't think there is a singular reason for all cases either.). ATi tends to perform a little worse in openGL(higher CPU overhead in the driver for openGL, or perhaps more fairly put nVidia has(had?) a very good openGL driver) but certainly not that much worse.
Have a look see to make sure you are really CPU bound. Increase the resolution, use 32-bits and maybe even a little bit of anisotropic filtering. If your framerate stays allmost identically the same, then you are definetly CPU bound. May as well make the best of it and keep the settings quite high since it won't matter to performance.
If it was a desktop you could allways play the 'replace random parts and see what happens game', if you had a bunch of interchangable parts that is, some people sell their old crap and they certainly won't be able to test this last ditch effort.

Rate of fire is highest at 20 FPS and lowest at 21 FPS(!!!).
As for the claim that bunnyhopping air controll is increased and rate of gaining speed is lowered at high framerates, try it with vsync off, fps_max at various values. cl_showspeed 1 and a _special script helps with consistency, you can also do turns with cl_yawspeed at various values and using keyboard controll or +right/+left in the console for testing. You can also look at pm_airaccelerate in pm_shared.c in the HLSDK and see if you come to the same conclusion as I did as to what effects framerate ought to have on bunnyhopping.
Edit: that's not to say that bunnyhopping is 'better' at 20 FPS or whatever, you gain the most speed at somewhere between 40 and a 80 FPS I think, it's rather awkward to test, but going really high doesn't help forward acceleration. And you still get capped to 1.7x in a few jumps anyway.

Very common rumour floating around though. Many tests have been done in respect to that rumour, and I've tested it also. Like in counter-strike, I jump for almost 1.5 times longer with 300 fps than with 100 fps. Other things the high fps will affect are bunnyhop acceleration and firing rate.
And if you have an average eye, you can easily see the increased smoothness that the greater fps's give you.
and thats why i do it. smootheness of the game. could care less if my gun fires .05 seconds slower. if a shotty does 180 dmg un-upgraded, theres no need for it to be any faster.
i wonder what id software and valve were thinking, an engine based everything upon fps... pff...
