<div class="IPBDescription">think that an outdoor map could work?</div> I was thinking with sens chamber working so well that maybe a map outside could actaully work. course there'd have to be geographical things in it to provide cover andwhat have you still. but I think it could be possible. maybe a conyon or something with lots of rocks and stuff.... it would be fun for lerks, right now the only fun place to stretch those wings is outside the land pad on NS_Hera

    Too much open space in outdoor maps, unless its like a canyon with a lot of coves and such, maybe on an alien planet o.O

    But if the cieling is very high, your open for a lot of lerk gas, fade blinking and anti-JPingness.

    here's all the solutions you need

    1- get rid of gas and put in lerk spikes , that way at least it takes skills to lerk kill JPers

    2- of course there would still be cover, but if your walking around in the open for that window of time you DANG sure should be killed by a blinking fade.

    Broken your thread right here - "with the new sens chamber" doesn't meantion anything about needing to change NS to get it to work.

    right here goes.

    A - Outdoor and HL1 doesn't work well. Look at the outdoor areas in single player, they are not wide open, and those that are have no real detail or cover (think the dam area, nothing really there) to get the outdoor to work efficiently, there needs to be many curves and not a very big gap between the walls, this defeats out door to an extent. make yourself a nice looking canyon, with curves so you don't see much of it at once, make the rock look natural, add your cover. You should have a nice poly count there if you can do it right, BUT it defeats the purpose of outdoor map, due to the number of "corridor" type canyons you need.

    &

    B - Skybox + flying creatures would irritate the hell out of people, not to mention skybox + wall walking creatures, and please god don't suggest AvPs fix (kill the creature as it trys to leave the wall and move onto the sky)

    Speaking of AvP, take AvP2 look at the first level, where U first get fired on by the predator (the human mission), next to the bridge, with the trucks on it. Now get yourself hammer and make that area for HL engine.

    But by all means, go ahead and make one, perhaps it will work with your fixes.

    you can explain everything with Nanites and Bacturiam, so you could rationalize why they can only go so high into the sky and what not.

    and it wouldn't have to be a canyon, what about a jungle? lots of tree's and stuff.... I could see that being an intense place to battle aliens.

    Thing about HL1 map engine is that "outdoors" is essentially "indoors, but with carefully placed textures/images to create the illusion of open space".

    In other words, it's largely pointless to make an "outdoors" map. You simply can't achieve any kind of sprawling, wide-open areas with HL1, atleast not very well.

    You'd still have basically the same thing. Corridor after corridor with a few wide open spaces, except the corridors would be like... canyons, with sky pictures above them instead grating, etc, etc...

    EDIT: I'm not sure if anyone told you, but it's been established by theoretical physicists that jungle/forest maps can't be done in Half Life 1. It's a universal impossibility. =P

    They invariably look horrible.

    perhaps normal jungles that you might find here in earth... but on an alien planemt maybe tree's don't require as much detail.... maybe they look a lot simpler... ya know?

    come on lets brainstorm here... I'm tired of all the maps being all the... well the same!

    I think an outdoors map could be pulled of. lets look at all the things NS has done that people said couldn't be done

    They said Range VS melee would never be closed to balanced and look, its pretty close, well close enough to get enjoyment from a game.

    sure everyone SAYS its impossible, but is it reall? I don't think so.

    There is also the very specific reason that marines can only build into spaceships because they are maintened by nanites. While the bacterium could expand on a planet, the nanites would have to be implemented in some sort of base, but they couldn't go outside the area, meaning the marines couldn't build anything outside. So it doesn't work.

    Suppose we get rid of the theory and simply work on a map, for <i>fun</i>, you have to remember that any outdoors map with the HL1 engine is UGLY. There is a reason why you don't see many. Now, with HL:source, that would be an entirely different question.

    If you're also talking about custom maps for NS, you have plenty of outdoors one that you can download. Search for custom maps server, you're bound to stumble upon some.
