as i see this uberpositive post i cant reisist to post and say HELLO! to . so HELLO bro, feel like home and may you have a merry time.
Just some quick advice if you want to know the game (mostly speaking about regulat ns_games, not co_games): 1) Read the manual here, the community manual is the most up-to-date (last version of the game, which is version 3.0). 2) Read the forums and use the search function before you got any more questions. 3) co_games in my opinion can help you to find out about the weapons but not (in pubs) about teamplay, which in my opnion is what you should find in a good ns-game (teamplay). (Thats all about co_games, move on to ns_games and play co_games when you don't have the time to play long games). 4) Play as a rine first, not as an alien as it is the most difficult part. As a rine you are given orders by your commander, do what he asks. If there are no orders, just follow other players. As a rine you will see the different alien lifeforms and their abilities and hopefully you will learn how to counter them, if not go back to 1) and/or 2) 5) Then create your own server with sv_cheats set to 1 (sv_cheats 1) so you can practice as a commander (so you have an idea of what he is actually doing in his chair) and as an alien to learn about the alien abilities. After having read the manual you should know all the rine and alien abilities. 6) Now that you know what the rines are capable of, play as an alien. When you are new just go gorge and drop a resource tower or a chamber that your team wants to be build (either defence chamber, movement chamber or sensory chamber), then go skulk again and try to stop/ambush the rines with the rest of your team.
Damn you Xtof, you have that whole "welcome" number list stored on a .txt or something.
Anyhoo, welcome to the throng Andyfromspace. Remember to listen to anyone giving you good advice. One thing to remember, in NS games, as a Marine, you are the troop in a standard RTS. Try to go wherever your commander wants you to go. If you've got a waypoint, hold down "C" and look at your minimap, and try to work out the best way of getting there. Watch out for anything red appearing on the map, as this is something that wants to kill you, be it an alien player, or structure, they all show you as red on the map.
Also remember that playing as a Marine all the time is all well and good, but playing as an alien, you'll get the feel of how they move, and any limitations of each class, eg Skulks are quick, can go nigh on anywhere, but are easy to kill at a distance, but lethal up close. On the other hand, the Onos is slow (relatively), armoured, and hard to kill with anything less than a team of marines to help you, or a good few players with HMGs, and shotguns. Marines will die to a well player Onos. But they are not impossible to defeat. But watch out for the distraction. An Onos will kill marines, but a skulk will kill far more if all the marines are concentrating their fire on the Onos. Kepp a look out for things like that, and the community will love you.
One last thing. Get a good headset and sturdy mic combo. You can shout for help and still be shooting with the voicecomm system, but if you've only got a keyboard, then you're pretty much on your own.

Not at all. But it seems identical to one pre-3.0, just modified to reflect the changes that the new release has brought about. Just exactly what those changes are, I've read in the changelog, but yet to see with my eyes, seeing as dial-up can't really sustain a 150+MB download, and I am not a believer in download managers. I will get back into NS with broadband comes to my area.
Even so, it's people like us that are the beacon for the online world. Only recently shadowed by the PlanetSide massive, damn them for that. The online world would be a much better place if it was mandatory for people to post on a beginners forum and get a feel for the game by asking the current players for advice.

Glad I've never set foot in the Tech forum. Dread to think of it's contents. Just imagine it. A whole series of replies cut and pasted from the same .txt.
That kind of thing gets you lynched in other places!
