    Ok here we go:

You need an original HL cd-key and steam.
Install steam and register your CD key.

This allows you to download Half-Life.
Once you can choose half-life in your "my games" list you execute it and start the trainingslevel once. (this is important)
After that you install NS in your Half-Life folder:
    C:\steam\steamapps\youraccountname\Half-life\

After that start steam again and choose Naturalselection from the my games list:
    Congrats you are ready to play ns now <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Hi NSplayer ^^,

Half-Life one is just what you need to play this great free mod. You can download it from one of the <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/view?action=files' target='_blank'>links</a> on this page.

I'm not sure whether you have to give your CD-key, but I guess not.

If you have difficulties installing, go to the tech forum or do a search and I'm sure you will find the answers.

NS is a great mod, just give it some time to learn and I'm sure you will enjoy it.
One more thing <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/view?action=manual' target='_blank'>RTFM</a> (Read the flipping manual ^^).

Like the others just said, you need a fully legal copy of HL1 to play NS. Install Half-Life, then do the Steam install, or buy HL2 Silver or Gold and download HL1. Make sure that you play HL1 at least once, either just the training level, or start a whole new game, and sit out the train ride...

Quit Half-Life, then right-click on the Steam icon in your System Tray (botton right corner of the screen as default). Run the NS installer, then start Steam again. Log back into the network, then under 3rd Party Games, you will now have listed "Natural Selection". Double click on that, and NS will launch.

If you don't take the HL2 Silver or Gold route, then you will need to register your Half-Life 1 CD Key with Valve, in order for HL to show up under Steam. Follow the instructions in Steam to register the key, then it'll download any updates that are available, and keep it up to date in the future.,

Hope that has sorted out any problems csplayerr. If you need anything else, just ask...

i was just wondering if you have an extra online cdkey i can use?
  • Lt_PatchLt_Patch Join Date: 2005-02-07 Member: 40286Members
That would be ridiculous, as you would need to buy the key off of someone, seeing as you need to register the key before Steam will allow you the HL files. If you're using a CD key that was found aboard the dishonorable ship Kazaa, or any P2P network, then Vavle will have nerfed that key, and blacklist anyone trying to use it.

What you need to do is to either log on to Steam, or go to your local indie games retailer (not a huge chain. Indies FTW!), open your wallet, and turf over a tenner (or whatever HL1 is where you live), and actually BUY the game. That will allow you to play online.

The best things in life may be free, but online gaming is NOT one of them...

Max 10$ for a sealed version.

A used one should be around 5$

In your case, 1 week's pocket money should do it.

eBay. google for *unused/ unopen* HL1 cds. I bought 6 and 5 worked. Cost me £10. Bargain IMO.

Half-Life 1 should set you back no more than £10, or the equivelent, as it has been on Sierra's Classic range for some time now. You don't need to pay double for the Platinum Pack, Blue Shift and Opposing forces are just sides to the line, as I would say. Also, CS is a free mod that should be still downloadable via Steam (I think), so no worries there (hopefully).

If you're on a fast enough connection, just go right at Half-Life 2 Silver bundle. It comes with HL2, Counter-Strike:Source, Half-Life 1, Counter-Strike, Blue Shift, Opposing forces, Day Of Defeat, and DoD: Source, when it gets released. It doesn't cost much more than HL2: Bronze, which is just HL2, and CS:S

Am I missing something here? (In other words: do I smell something fishy?)

Yup Xtof, you smell a downloaded, and hacked version of Steam, just like the rest of us.

I vote for a nerfing of the csplayerr, unless they can provide reasons why the nerf should not happen.

You can get hl1 on budget for £5
  • yetieateryetieater Join Date: 2005-03-05 Member: 43334Members
You can probably get it cheaper than that <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Definitely look it up on Ebay and bid on a pack with 5 HL keys. Extremely cheap and nobody really needs to have CDs anymore with Steam.
