That's because game designers can't think of something original. Crates are used to store items such as health, ammo, money or points or they function as barriers or some sort of stairs. On top of that they are easy to draw or model because they are simple cubes or cylinders. As if the excessive use of crates isn't unimaginative enough, some designers don't even take the time to create their own version of the crate and just plagiarize the exceptional work of art some other game designer created.

Ok, this may be how the crate became to be so apparent in action video games so much, but these days crates and cargo bays can be so so so much more thanks to better game technology that allows us to create more 'unique' architecture and level design.
But this competition will test you! This requires you to be original with something unoriginal.
The competition is to make a cargo bay. As big as you like, even a whole level if you wish, or just the cargo bay itself. It has to run in the limits set out in Flayra's guidelines (r_speeds etc). This may sound simple and boring, but WE are going to push the boundries of what an in game cargo bay looks like! We're going to reinvent the crate!
I want to see things that I've never seen in cargo bays before.
One of the key requirements is that the map contains crates! CRATES!!! ALL THE CRATES IN THE WORLD!!
But you have to be original with them. And the whole level. WHO'S IN!?
Make it look good! Asthetics are important!
No deadline as yet. We'll see how this goes.
Reply and discuss this with me !

hmm, i could probably dig up ns_cratewars (formerly ns_siege911) with a totally redone core area.

its a very nice idea. but I myself prefer NOT to add crates to any map. Im trying to find alternative solutions. when you bring down a map to its basics a crate is nothing more than the most simple way to give some cover. but vertical pipes, arches, high differences, do aswell. good luck for al the participants <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That sounds hilariously fun.

That's the most beautiful warehouse I've ever seen.
In fact, time for a Nexus Review :
<span style='color:orange'>+ Crates
+ Symmetry
+ Neat Stacking
- No Purple Lighting
OVERALL: 89%</span>
There's one like this for Half-Life. Boxwars... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
It's not quite as fun as it sounds. Once, after locating the super nail gun, which kills in one shot, I just sat on top of it's spawnpoint and didn't touch my mouse after aiming at a doorway.
Got 5 kills within a minute, and noone tried to get in that room again. Because there's no way you can tell which crate shot you, there's also no way to kill someone that is sniping, unless it's a small room of course.
I'm thinking 3 months, and in this time, people can post their work and everyone can contribute new ideas for the CRATES!! Then all the cratage can be improved, and we'll have the most beautiful collection of crateheavens for NS!
<b>crate fact no.0001</b>- crates are strong and made of wood, making them ideal for carrying cargo!
I'm wondering if this thread's about making a cargo bay without crates
OR
Redesigning the crate and putting examples of this in your cargo bay.
If it's the latter and I have time I'd give it a go, but the former sux just a bit o ****
It could have-
Cargo Containers
Tankers
Parachute Drop Platforms (HI-LOW drop platforms for infantry vehicles)
Dropships
Transport Vessels (ships)
Tractor Beams
Manipulation Arms
Movement Assistance (aka, trollys and the like)
but i think this one is about re-designing the crate
It could have-
Cargo Containers <span style='color:purple'>surely these are just examples of the humble crate, given a facelift and supplied in an array of different colours and materials?</span>
Tankers <span style='color:purple'>again, crates</span>
Parachute Drop Platforms (HI-LOW drop platforms for infantry vehicles) <span style='color:purple'>do you mean HALO (High altitude, low opening)</span>
Dropships <span style='color:purple'>crates for men</span>
Transport Vessels (ships) <span style='color:purple'>crates for men/cargo</span>
Tractor Beams <span style='color:purple'>beams for moving crates for men</span>
Manipulation Arms <span style='color:purple'>arms for moving crates</span>
Movement Assistance (aka, trollys and the like) <span style='color:purple'>assistance for moving... crates</span>
but i think this one is about re-designing the crate <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
[crate=winnar]Yep, but when we think about it, everything about a cargo bay boils down to the simple crate. (points up)[/crate]
P.S. I had to put in the [crate] tag because I actually tried to end a [color] tag with [/crate].
P.P.S. Crates rule <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Those were the best for endgame fades.

I think a lot of you are missing the point here! You have to first engage your love for the crate! Then make a cargo bay! I don't give a flying rats **** what other ideas you have for your cargo bay! I want to see ORIGINAL and UNIQUE ideas INVOLVING crates!
You don't have to redesign the crate!
You can if you want!
IT JUST HAS TO INVOLVE CRATES! BECAUSE I LOVE THEM! AND YOU SHOULD TOO!
INVOLVE.
INVOLVE! THAT'S THE KEY WORD!!
Get making, I want to see ideas! Just draw some ideas for Christssakes! I want this thread pampered with drawings of crate ideas by tomorrow! Come on people!
<b>crate fact no.0002</b> - crates are made out of all different types of timber. Some are water proof, and some even float if they have plenty of air inside! <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Thanks for your constructiveness.
Crates are underated, that's the point of this competition. I am setting this task to reinvent the use of the crate.
