well, i wouldnt say that all of the older ns players are leaving, i have been around since almost the beginning, and i have not left yet <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
but when combat was introduced, it did bring in alot of players like the devs wanted, but the wrong type of players. n00bs, cs script kiddies, cheaters, hackers... the list goes on. combat has the same basic principle as cs does, round times, team kills eachother and respawns, something to protect, etc. its like regular ns, only alot shorter.
i think thats where the decline of players started. people got fed up with all the new commers and moved onto a different mod, or like a few servers i know, including myself which is to kick/ban those types of people and become a very small community of people that enjoyed the good old days of great ns games without being accused of cheating or people getting **** and leaving because they suck and calling you a hacker.
but, combat isnt the only thing that might have contributed to the players skill level dropping. as custom maps come out, the majority of them are terrible. one of these types of custom maps are siege maps (bleh) which limit the stratagies you can use in the game. its either: rush, defend or camp. one or two siege maps every so often is good, but servers that play them 24/7 is just rediculous. now you can see why players get worse over time, because thats all they ever do. dont get me wrong, there are good ns custom maps that come out (ns_moria, ns_hydrosity, ect) its just people have been playing crap maps and combat so long that they are not willing to go back and develop some skill in different areas on better maps.
i think if the devs wanted to attract more players, they should have done something else besides combat. i have not the slightest idea what might could replace it, but im sure that there is something that would have worked better than that. have more than one marine team and one elien team and make it to were they have to accomplish different objectives? i dont know.

Yeah true but as it was said in an amped article. The clan scene in CAL actually went up instead of down for once. I think theres like 4 heavy set scrimming clans. Than we have like another 5 who play every so often. Than theres the rest who are unknown or live outside the US.

1 year after the release of CO, v3.0 beta
now,
what CO:NS game ratio do we have?
but anyways, I think that the competitive scene needs to grow, then people would have more ambitions to get into it
