Mouse Sensitivity?

ScuzballScuzball Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20657Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow

Why is mine so high?
My sensitivity is set to 35. That's thirty five, not three point five.

If I drag my mouse across as far as it can go, I do roughly two 360 degree turns ingame.

Most people I asked said they had under 10 sensitivity, and that around 20 it was too high to control.

What gives? Do they all have higher sensitivy out of game, or is it, as I suspect, the fact that I'm using a laser mouse? I've had to crank the sensitivity way high on the same model mouse on other computers as well.

I'd also like to hear if you prefer your sensitivity higher or lower, and what for. I've heard that a slighly low sensitivty helps smooth out aiming, but I like the responsivness of high sens as well.

What sensitivity is 'right' for a person is really a personal preference. Here is a question for you: do you have mouse acceleration completely turned off? IE: have you used the CAL(?) registry fix or the mouse commands on the item shortcut?

Okay I got that out of my system.

First, the fact that putting your mouse sensitivity so high just because you use your optical mouse does not mean that it has too. That is totally unnecessary. But since I've been brave and kind enough to tell you that you have yours set waaaaay too high. But hey, if you like it, then by all means.

Most of us here uses somewhere between 5 and 15 for mouse sensitivity, which is sufficient enough.

Seriously man, put down your mouse sensitivity. 7 would be a recommended value for this game, but that's just me. (For the record, I use 10.9.)

check your windows mouse settings as these alter ingame mouse speed as well.

as for why different mice move at different speeds, i don't know though i think it is something to do with the resolution? i've just bought a new razer diamondback and unless all settings are on minimum it just moves like greased lightning (not a good thing in ns, especially when you are used to a slow sensitivity anyway, i use 4.1)

I use 20 or 30, depending on how I aim.

It depends on your mouse, your windows settings, and your NS mouse settings. A 7 for me isn't the same as a 7 for you. The same thing holds true for gamma/brightness settings.

    Quoted for truth.
Too often people argue about sensitivities, but the in-game numbers are not the only factors that affect your movement.

Having said that, I use between 18 and 22; 18 when I'm slow and falling asleep, 22 when I'm fully alert and awake.

Just for fun, try setting a sensitivity of 2000 or so. Move the mouse as little as possible, then back. It should sort of "snap" to places - you can't go between those points. Looks like aimbot if one of those points turn out to be a player.

I tried using 200 today, and it's pretty interesting. Requires extreme calmness, as a small jolt in the arm would move your view completely.

Here's a tip: To find the sens that helps you the most start LOW. I've found that if you start high you will quickly get used to barely moving the mouse, then when you find out that doesn't work it's much harder to get used to a low sens.

I remember when I was used to a sens of 200. For me that was ~1/2 inch = 360 degrees. Not fun to change...

I'm curious. How high do the top clanners set their sensitivities? Do they go for <1 inch for each 360 degree rotation, or for 2+ inches for a full rotation, or somewhere in between?

As a marine, 6 inches for a 360 degree turn. As skulk, 3.

Well if i put my sensetivity that high i would have to wait 1 min for me to stop spinning in game!

My windows mouse acceleration is set to low if i set it higher i can look forward to spending ages trying to aim at 1 spot!

I have my ns sensetivity set to 5.5 enough to do 1 360 spin over moving the mouse around 2 inches, any higher and im on 1 of those fair ground rides which keep spinning you for ages!

But like some of the others have said it really depends on the mouse and your preferences.

My mouse is very sensitive, if i turn windows acceleration to max then go in-game and try to do a 360 spin i lose count on how many times i have spun around i think the once i counted roughly 20 but everything is soooooo blury its really hard to tell how many times i did spin round.

Its a factor of resolution, windows sensitivity, mouse drivers and wether or not you have any m_accel. So yeah, the numeric sensitivity doesn't matter.

i play ns on 2 computers... one has a normal ball mouse and the other is a laser mouse... the ball mouse is set at about 8.5... the laser mouse is set at 15 (yes 15) because...

when you pice up a ball mouse to move it to a new location on the pad (say when you run put of pad) the pointer stays in place... so a lower settiing works great (easyer to control)

when you pick up a laser mouse (for the same reson) the pointer does not stay in the same place... so you crank up the setting so you do not have to pick up the mouse (and hope you can keep control)

ball mouse > laser mouse for FPS imo

I use an MX500. I use the second notch up from the lowest windows sensitivity. Mouse accel off. Ingame sens is 7.1. I have a large mouse mat, to do a 360 I have to move about 5/6 inches I think.. o-O. I use same sens for skulk.

Scuz you noob . You have to be leet like me and use nice small numbers, like 1.5, and 2.

Then again, MX510 Mouseware does make me lower it.

    p.s. Get a better comp.

my mouse sensitivity is set to 3... anything above 10 would make me spin out of control... and i have a laser mouse... but even when i had a ball mouse i had it set at 6... when i played in cal my clan required it to be set below 5... increases distant accuracy

a lot of factors effect the sensitivity in game. not just the sensitivity command
my current sens is 2 but it is actually more sensitive than my previous mouse when i set it to 5.

factors affecting the sens would be:
sensitivity console command in ns of course
    mouse sensitivity by default
drivers that can change sens of mouse?
mouse acceleration from windows or drivers
    mousepad? not sure about this
    m_yaw, m_pitch console settings etc
    resolution

mouse accel is crazy, at the moment if i move my mouse 1 inch left, no matter how fast, it moves me about 120 degrees in game, with accel it will move me anywhere from 120 degrees to 1080 degrees dependent on the speed i move the mouse.

i set my sensitivity to where if i do a one eighty strafe jump.. i'm pointing in the exact opposite direction, not overturning or underturning. My mouse speed in windows is at the 4th notch from the fastest, pointer precision is off. my sens ingame is 7.2 or 6.8 for both races. I also use these added comments in a shortcut on my desktop

    -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms

Mouse type/Window settings have a much bigger impact then you ingame number... I used to use 14 and now I use 3.. they are roughly the same exact sensitivity just with different mice/drivers. From I have seen the best sensitivity is a place were you can make fine tune changes to your aim while still being able to 180 if needed, if your able to do this then try lowering your sensitivity until you cannot 180 and then put it back up to your last known 180 sense. This way you get the most movement while stille having your needed reaction speed.
