Ping Increases When There's Action

I just reinstalled windows XP. I didn't reinstall NS or HL, HL2.

When I play NS now my ping is fine at around 30 but it jumps to 200 or more when there are multiple players on the screen. Should I reinstall NS, HL, and HL2? What could cause this problem?

    It is much more likely that this is something connection related than hardware. Unless you have a really slow computer, in which case you shouldn't be running XP.

    Try to optimize your connect. See steampowered.com for more on that, there are links there that I can't remember right now.

    I have an Athlon Mobile XP 2500 clocked at 2.4 Ghz. My video card is a Radeon 9500 Pro. I have 1 Gig of dual channel OCZ memory. Motherboard is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe.

    I tweaked my connection by using tools from www.broadbandreports.com and <a href='http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html' target='_blank'>http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html</a> .

    My network card is a Yukon Gigabit PCI card.

    I think I'm good.

    This started to happen when I reinstalled windows. I didn't format the hard disk and I didn't reinstall HL, NS, or HL2.

    That would be it. The 2 OS's are conflicting. Format and reinstall, always, must do both, not just one. Backup stuff on cd's or dvd's if you have to.

    Reinstalling HL, HL2, and NS fixed it. I hate reinstalling 5 gigs worth of software.

    sometimes it also pays to update you videocard drivers.. soundcard driver, that kinda stuff

    You probably could have just solved it by setting steam to LAN/T1 > 1M under Settings>Internet.
