Question About Motion Tracking

Read above
Now i've been wondering this for a while.

Does anybody know that when you standing completely still but you move your view does that make you pick up on their motion tracking?

I think that's so unfair that you can't even look around if that's true

I've thought the exact same thing. The only problem I have with moving my mouse is that there's no way to check if I'm "sticking out".

If you are above the marine; moving your screen (even standing still) will make you show up on MT.

    Known bug.

Not too keen on the way that MT puts skulks in the respawn queue; but, meh- take out all the upgrades and you are left with Counter-Strike in space.

maybe a good solution is mt blips being update less frequently, like once every 3 or 4 seconds. im assuming mt was meant for a general location on what is happening, like if something is attacking an rt. im assuming it was NOT meant for being able to ambush aliens, mainly poor gorges and weak aliens.

If Motion tracking was just on the minimap, would still let the commander see where all the aliens were headed, but wouldn't let marines gun down aliens with such ease.

You'd have my vote... NS without sof/mt would be for the win!
  • aeroripperaeroripper Join Date: 2005-02-25 Member: 42471NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Constellation
i think motion tracking basically eliminates ambushing once they research it unless you stand still for a long time and wait there.

    why is this a problem?

it's motion tracking, it tracks motion. it makes sense. If you stand still, you aren't moving, no motion = no tracking. if you move, you show up. motion = tracking, MOTION TRACKING.

    OMG WHAT A CONCEPT.

MT doesn't eliminate ambusing -- don't move and you get to ambush!!!!11111 weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Mt gives only a general idea, it kinda lags and sometimes the beep is on the floor and alien is up.

Mt does make 1 hive skulks half useless...but!

    Not saying more.

Motion tracking only works for units moving faster then walking speed (which if you have set to maximum, will be high enough to set off motion tracking from the speed change when you turn sharp or initially after you press the strafe button while holding forward) and does not detect cloaked units (walking or running, although you can only run cloaked within the radius of a sensory tower)

In beta 6 units with the cloak upgrade will only be 30% visable at all times except when attacking (even while running at full speed) but will still show up on motion tracking unless they are under 10% visability, which only occurs in the range of sensory chambers, or while walking cloaked. Fast turns will no longer uncloak you so fast while walking however, so cloaked walking skulks can walk at full speed with no fear of being either motion tracked or seen.

For referance, all fully cloaked units are currently 5% visable; meaning they are nearly impossible to recognize if they are standing still, but still possible to see by a sharp eye if they move at any reasonable speed.

hmm only when i'm directly above? in other cases i can wiggle like crazy and won't register on MT ??

and about walking speed... is MT activated at certain speed in general, or each class has it's individual max speed to stay unregistered?

let's assume for a second that skulk walking speed = gorge running speed. then if i run as a gorge i'll get tracked, even though moving at the same speed as walking skulk i won't, right?

and what if i walk with celerity?

well seeming as changing your view rotates your model, this could be registered as a "movment' and you may show up on mt. (I think)

    /me confused...

i just checked with my friend - he claims he could see me walking on MT with cele skulk. or is it misunderstanding - we used say command, not teamspeak? (i was walking in a straight line, no turning and strafing)

we also tried this 'wiggling directly above rine' bug but i seemed to stay undetected.

    well.. see my previous post

You always show up on MT when you move unless you're in range of a sensory chamber(occasionally the same happens if you just have cloaking). Walking doesn't make a difference.
And by being above the marine with MT I assume he meant being higher on the Y-axis or whichever axis it is, not being straight above him...

Not to make u look like a jackass, but you have to move to get into an ambush position, Unless you decide to spawn into your ambush spot :/

MT is only overpowered early game, and even then your sacrificing upgrades for something which isnt effective at killing fades. Maybe it should require adv armoury to research or something.

    Ok lets get MT straight.

The Simple Rule as someone stated earlier. When you move in a direction. IE: NOT stationary.

    You show up on MT.

    MT Negates when:

You are looking directly at the skulk/alien lifeform cloaked or not.

    MT DOESN NOT Negate when:

    You walk.
    You cloak.
    You Cloak, walk.

And I can say this with 100% truth as I've had this debate with a friend and we tested it out and I was discovered to be wrong about walking and being in cloak meaning that you did not show up on MT.

They could just solve this problem by giving aliens a "motion tracking" sensor, so whenever they were being picked up by MT it would come up on the screen in the corner or something... then again that might make MT a worthless advantage...

The only problem with that is that the aliens would instantly know if marines had motion tracking, and could change their play style accordingly.

it could be fixed by having to parasite observatory before this icon shows on alien hud, so u would have to take a walk and locate it first.
