<div class="IPBDescription">Even if you hated Tribes: Vengeance...</div> Great Tribal War... for most of you that never played this ridiculously fantastic mod, you've been missing out. The original mod was for Tribes 2, plagued with issues, and had problems with client-side mod releases. Between the fact that you had to download it, its niche playerbase, and T2 issues alone, it never got off beyond beta releases.

But now it's back!

Great Tribal War is a mod for Tribes: Vengeance. Even though T:V itself was a complete waste of code, this team is trying to do something useful with it.

Basically, think of the biggest Tribes map you've ever seen.

Then make it bigger. Pretty big eh? Now make it literally 50x larger. Now you're looking at about the average sized GTW map. On foot, it would literally take 6 minutes to travel from one base to the next.

And there's about a dozen bases <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

You have two teams in GTW, and each team starts with a 'Switch' (The reason it's called the switch is they used the old switch model from T2). The 'Switch' is the life of your warmachine - anywhere the switch is dropped and powered, you will spawn. If your switch loses power or is destroyed, you no longer spawn. The goal of GTW is to first destroy the enemy switch, and then destroy the enemy. In theory, it's pretty simple. After all, in Tribes, you've been breaking into bases and destroying generators for years.

Then you have a variety of tools to work with. In the old version of GTW (Not sure of the new one) the Generator you could deploy would put an impenetrable shield around the switch. So the switch could be found, but the generators need to be dropped first. In addition, you had power spheres from a network of solar arrays you could construct which would power defenses, including large anti-vehicle turrets.

Amongst the deployables, you could also create and deploy vehicles - Large 6-man dropships, small light interceptor scoutcraft, the cumbersome bomber, tanks, and light single-person hovercycles.

When the game began, the best teamsize was a team of about 8 to 10, and voice communication was a necessary. You started on a small, defenseless platform surrounded by crates that you would turn into your war machine. Your team would set up an arming station, create the vehicles that they needed, pick up the proper gear (Switch, Power Sources, Inventory Stations), pack up the base, and move out. Generally you'd have the dropship, everyone armed to the teeth, and two interceptors - one to escort the dropship, and one to search for the enemy.

You'd then take off across the massive landscape. The interceptors had powerful radar and could 'see' for quite a distance. Your goal was to chose one of the many permenant base structures scattered across the world, move inside and set up, then crush your enemy.

The hardest part, the 'slow' part, was always seeking out the enemy base, finding where they moved to. Once that was found, it became a tactical game of wits - infantry combat was slower paced then normal due to the large 'realistic' terrain (The map we played on was a topographical scan of the Rocky Mts.), but picked up inside. Vehicles were key to travel the landscape, and you could pull some ingenious strategies for victory.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->In one game we played, we used a bomber decoy to lure all the enemies onto the roof of their base, armed with missile launchers. Once they were all running around outside, our main force, armed with mortars, saturated the rooftops with fire, killing most all of them.

In another game, our base had been broken into and destroyed, and there were only 3 of us left. The enemy had left their dropship floating nearby, unguarded. We were fairly poorly equipped - one Juggernaut armed for assualt with a shield, a medium default spawn, and myself with my 'Pilot' gear, which included a repair gun. We hijacked the dropship and headed off to a corner of the map where we repaired and planned our strategy. I then flew us in as close to the enemy base as possible while remaining under the cover of the terrain. Once there, the other two players hopped out and proceeded in on foot. I then took the dropship up to as high as I could, and waited for their signal. When they were ready, I flew the dropship in low and fast, and hopped out OVER the base. Sure enough, the few defenders got locks on the dropship and toasted it in seconds. They then actually chased after the debris hoping to kill any survivors. I mistimed my landing and fell nearly to my death, so I had to repair, and was on the wrong side of the base. My two teammates entered the base and began ripping down the defenses. I came up through a second entrance and ran to locate the Switch. I heard an explosion and my teammates cheered, and everything lost power. The two defenders came back to the base, and myself and the other medium ran out to distract them. The heavy inside located the switch and destroyed it. We both managed to dust the defenders, and then found a single default spawn running around. We finished him off and the game ended - We had won! Turns out the enemy team all took suicide pills when we stole their ride because they had no way to get out of there. They respawned, then set off in flyers to find us. We killed their base and just before the switch went down, they all tried to respawn back at the base again, but only one of them spawned in time!<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

The average game length was about 2 or 3 hours if both teams were on the ball. It took us a while to figure it out, but once we did it was probably the best game I'd ever played. Sometimes the game would end in 10 minutes because you got lucky and found the enemy dropship en-route.

Anyway, you can find more about the mod HERE:

<b>If you work with the unreal engine, and can do modelling / skinning, they really need your help, their IRC channel is on irc.dynamix.com #gtwar</b> I'd help them but I'm totally worthless <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Damn I can't wait for this mod!

The T2 version and all its files has been lost for some time. Trust me, if it was still up we'd all be playing it still <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Jetpacks. Kinetic weapons (None of this hitscan ****). Weird, **** up movement system where you can 'slide' across terrain with little friction (called 'Skiing'). Basically you flying around with a jetpack, using terrain to move around like a skateboarder on a quarterpipe, playing CTF. Combat was usually tricky, difficult to master due to the timing and skill required to play.

Well there's a simlar mod called War2003. I used to play it but the only active servers have some hacking issues. It's sad because you could cloak your turrets and other structers and with the hackers it makes some of the mod's features useless.

I enjoyed building a plateform just under the water. Cloak it with four AA turrets and call it my little sam site <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

War2003 was a stolen mod, FYI. The guy originally worked on another mod called Meltdown, the creater was helping him learn coding, then he stole all the protected files and released it as his own mod.

Well, the server files are seperate from the client files. Join their IRC (irc.dynamix.com #gtwar) and yell at them, or at least find out when they host games. I can't get crap from them, except the client files, which are worthless without the server files.

    I think..
