How Many Maxplayers With This Connection?

<div class="IPBDescription">4Mbps down and 384Kbps up (advertised)</div> I searched and searched as I KNOW this has been posted, but to no avail.
Comcast has recently increased my connection speed (FREE!) and I want to increase the slots on my mini-server.

Assuming my box can handle it (which it can) what is the maxplayers my server can handle safely?

    The upstream is the important part. I'd say no more then 12 players comfortably, after that you'll start seeing latency introduced.

    Yeah thanks for that Vadakill. What is the formula for determining this?

    each player needs about 4-8 KB a sec normally, but if you have big open areas with lots of entity activity, it will go higher. to determine how many kilobits = a kilobyte, just take 384 and divide it by 8, so you have give or take 48 kilobytes a sec in data upload speed on your connection.

    i wouldnt recommend more than 10 players on that, 12 is pushing it.

    Here's an old graph I like to use to show bandwidth usage:

    The only thing that sucks about residential connections is that they are not "dedicated", as in the upload is an average number and they do not guarentee your connection to achieve those results all the time. Sure it may work great, but if you get near your max connection bandwidth, you'll notice "frequent" lag spikes whenever your connection is not running at its optimal performance...which happens more often then you think.

    If you had a connection such as what AdvPredator is bragging about, I'd still try not to put the maxplayers up to where you are maxing out your connection. If you wanted to go do something with your time on the Internet and the server is full...you'll probably disrupt game play with lag spikes for those who are playing (and they will most likely not return to a laggy server).

    Of course...the best way to find out how many players you can "comfortable" support is to just put up the server, try to fill it up, and monitor the bandwidth use. As well, be absolutely sure the Memory and CPU usage is not causing any problems, as these need to be at acceptable values in order to blame performance issues strictly on bandwidth restrictions.

    How many players would a 512kbps (up) be able to support, while I'm playing at the same time? (non dedicated)

    i have a 355 kbits/sec connection and i can handle 10 players fine.

    for 512 kbits, first convert it to kbytes. you have 64 kbytes of upload, so i would recommend 14. 16 is pushing it. but thats based on if everyone is using 4 kb of data. the more they use, the less players the connection can stand. so dont have any huge open area maps (ns_square_wall) where clients can spam chambers and stuff and make the data they require alot more.

    I've seen a 12player ns server hosted on a 512/512kbps ADSL connection and it ran like ****.

    To be honest you really need a dedicated connection provided from a data-centre to run a decent ns server.

    I've never heard of sonic 2, and don't have a clue about syncing the colors, but thanks for the reply! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Wait, is that a cartoon?!?!?

    sonic 2 is a sega genesis game from way back in the year 1992. sonic is the mascot of sega. there are many cartoons that include sonic in them.

    old school games > most new stuff.

    my 15 year old sega genesis + sega cd > all new consoles muahahah

    and if this is going to continue, it should be moved to general discussion, because the last time i checked sonic the hedgehog has nothing to do with a ns server o.0

    Maxplayers 10 was very stable for a week, so I increased it to 12 last night. We shall see ... ... ... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    you shouldnt have a problem on combat maps because you cant build anything. as for ns maps, thats a different story...

    Just ran ns_de_dust with 12 for an hour - no problemo. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
