I'm working on one of the tutorials on Polycount's page, but one thing I can't understand how to do is how the heck do I de-select these things (#1)? (see http://img78.exs.cx/img78/9439/omg3uk.jpg) When I try to select the right side of the box the hole thing get selected, and I can't get the damn things to get left side etc. to get unselected...

Yes I'm new to modelling

    2 ways

Set the selection to vertex and select those 2 points that you can see

    or

Choose face and select those 2 points, if it select more than you want of the model simply hold shift and right mouse drag over the area you dont want
