YOU. MUST. PLAY.
Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 is probably the most unique (except for the time frame, of course) game I have played to this date. It is a tacticans dream, as well as a crazy psychopath who just wants do destroy, kill and maim everything in his path.

The game is almost completely none linear. Go about the way you would like to go about completing the objective, it doesnt put you on a set track to victory or defeat. Possabilities are endless in the ways and styles you can play.

Do you like to blow stuff up? This game has it too. Almost everything in the world is governed by the physics engine. Its no HL2 havok, but it is certainly impressive when your blowing up half of a building and pieces fly and crush that unlucky infantry in a one to one million's chance. I've blown a turret clear off of a tank in an extremely luck shot with my tiger II (poor Sherman), and the turret flipped over itself in the air and finally landed on two of my infantry, crushing them instantly. I was so impressed I was crying.

Also, you can blow anything up. Entire cities can be leveled after a long, extended tank faceoff. Is a shack in the way of your massive tank's destination and it holds a lone, annoying sniper infantry man, but your out of ammo? No problem! Just run the sniper and the shack's butt over! Problem solved!

The explosions in the game also create foxholes which are actually depressions in the game's terraforming landscape. Infantry can huddle inside the holes and use them as cover. Is a machine gun holding down a street and there is no cover in sight to get a good shot off with your sniper, and your tank cant reach him without rolling right into an AT minefield? No problem! Simply blow some potholes in the street, and let your sniper leap frog them until hes close enough to the machine gunner to snipe him! Problem solved! (Note: This actually happened to me!)

The AI in the game is pretty impressive. They might not be aware of the gunshots ringing out in the distance, but this allows for some pretty cool sneaking missions. They flank, take cover before they shoot back, and are a pretty damn big challange at times. Also, its trustworthy enough to allow your units to have their own free will (kind of like the sims, where you let them make decisions instead of just sitting there) and they will be effective in the area they are holding if you are commanding several battles at once. I was very impressed when a machine gun was pinning some of my units down, and they were on free will. One of my units was huddled by a wall and giving some supressing fire in short bursts while another unit circled around the machine gun's side and shot him. Brillant, all on the AI's own!

The missions in the game are unique. There isnt a repeat where you feel a strange sense of "daja voo" going on, they are each fresh, new missions, with about thirty to play. Very, VERY fun. The demo level alone has tons of replayability, and doesnt get dull with the different ways to get around to the objectives. Of course, there are better and more recommended ways of going about to achieve the mission, but you dont have to. Thats the beauty of it. You will probably end up playing through the campaign on all three difficulties, and trying each mission with a different way of tackling it each time.

Realism value? Its not like other RTS's where a machine gunner can take down a tank if he shoots it long enough. Each weapon has its own penetration value. If it doesnt penetrate the armor, it doesnt do damage, simple. Tanks? Tanks dont have healthbars, instead they have a little diagram of the tank in the lower left hand corner of the screen, similer to firearms, showing what has been damaged. You have to disable the tank, not deplete its health down to 0, which makes them tons of fun to tackle in various ways. You can take out the treds and run like hell out of the range of its cannon, or you can circle around to the rear side, which its armor is weaker and weapons penetrate more, and blast the engine out. Absolutely tons of fun!

DIRECT CONTROL! Probably one of the best things about this game is direct control. Take personal control of one of your units, aim his weapon, move him around, throw his guns and shoot his enemies. Aim at the enemies head, blow his helmet off, shoot him in the foot, or maybe you want to punch him in the face, and THEN shoot him while hes on the ground from the blow. Its up to you, you honostly have to experience it for yourself! On the note of controlling your soldiers, each has his own inventory diablo style. So hes got things to carry, and you can scavenge off of almost anything, from dead soldiers to blown tanks.

There isnt much else I can say. Pick up the demo and try it yourself. I'll post some of the controls here so you arent fustrated trying it out, the demo, unfortionatly, is very user unfriendly. Its one of the bonus missions, "officer," that is included in the actual game, so your assumed to know your way around the controls. Its still my favorite mission that I love playing with friends, as well, so you will get some GREAT fun out of it. Here are the controls:

Mouse 1: Select unit, move here, interact with (object).
Mouse 2: Switch weapons while in direct control mode, deselect unit.
(None Keypad)End: Toggle Direct Control
Ctrl: Must be held on to enter direct control. Once you take your finger off the key you exit direct control, its good for hoping in and hoping out of direct control if you need to throw a grenade accurately or what not real quick like.
Page Down/Up: Lower/raise your stance from standing > crouching > proned. PgDwn loweres, up raises, duh...
Space: Toggle between going prone and standing. HIT THE DIRT!
Arrow Keys: Move while you are in direct control.
F: Hand to hand, close quarters combat, IE punch that mother in the face with your fist, stock, knife, helmet (yes, smack that sucker with your helmet ), whatever you want.
X: Examine object. See what is in its inventory that you can pull into your own. Double click to quick transfer the object to your inventory instead of dragging. Two arrows appear between the inventory that your scavenging from and yours, click on the respective ones to transfer all of the units from the either your inventory to theirs or vis versa. This will make more sense once you actually get to see what examining is.
Comma: Cycle units. Nuff said.

Thats about it for the controls you need to know. I'll give you some tips and gameplay advice so you dont have to figure it out for yourself as well.

Refueling, repairing, redecorating: You can repair vehicles if the damaged area of the vehicle does not show up grey and is only red in the damage diagram in the lower left hand corner (it will make more sense once you play the game). Examine a tank or other vehicles and try to find a repair kit. Once you do, DRAG IT DIRECTALLY TO YOUR SOLDIERS HANDS. It can NOT go into your inventory, even if you have enough room. If you cant put it in your inventory, chances are its too big to carry period (IE the main cannon of a tank) OR it must be dragged directally to your soldier's hands. Make sure you have enough inventory space to put your weapon in it, or else he will throw down his weapon to put the object in his hand, although not all items will require your main weapon to go in your inventory, such as grenades. Instead the grenade will go to your main hand, and your soldier will hold the weapon with his secondary hand. Uh, back to the refueling part.

Find a gasoline canister inside a tank or other vehicle and drag it directally to your soldier's hands. When you move your mouse over a vehicle now, the cursor will either change to a funnel or a droplet. A droplet means you will siphone (sp?, IE take) fuel from the vehicle, and a funnel means you will put fuel into said vehicle. Take fuel from enemy tanks if you dont feel like using them yourself after repairing them, and fill up your own. The amount of fuel inside the canister is displayed by the canister image at the bottom of your screen.

Taking cover, and assigning it: Simply move your mouse by a piece of cover (wall, shrub, debree from a recently blown up tank like.. a turret!, etc..) and the mouse will change shape and a white diagram will appear by the piece of cover showing how your soldier will take cover there (you will know what they mean if you experiment with them). Soldiers will duck and pop up, in, and out of cover to shoot on their own once they are placed there, it looks really coo.

Movement: Double click to sprint, one click to jog. Stamina is in the lower left hand corner, dont sprint everywhere unless you need to.

Direct control aiming: Your mouse becomes an aim pointer, and the camera moves with the soldier when you move him with the arrow keys, so no need to scroll honostly. Simply aim at different places of the enemy with your mouse and click to fire. Red numbers below the aim point mean that its out of your weapon's range, yellow means its in range but you wont be as accurate. Green is what you should shoot for.. the closer to your soldier or whatever your controlling, the better the accuracy, duh.

Direct control aiming at tanks: You can aim at the individual areas on a tank to knock them out. Shoot at the treds to brake the treds and immobalize the tank from moving. Shoot the engine (rear of the tank) to stop the tank in its tracks. Shoot the turret to disable the turret, etc... try to circle around back of the tank because armor is not as thick at that point, as well as the sides. If you are a fast tank, and going up against a larger tank, dont go head on, you will lose. Take advantage of your speed and out run his turret, circle around the back, and plop him in his engine, try to disable his turret, ANYTHING. The bigger they are, the meaner they are. You need tactics to win.

Direct control cooking of grenades: You can cook grenades by the usual holding down on your mouse. You'll see a bar showing you how much time until the grenade explodes appear next to your cursor, try not to be holding it which it reaches zilch.

Planting mines, using objects. Not sure if this has changed from the demo to retail (as a few things have), but first equip mines, then hit U to place them. If I remember correctally, just select a spot, and your soldier will go about planting in a pattern with the mines, which isnt so in the retail, but I remember that in the demo. Try to plant them yourself, its better that way.

Examine those crates! In the beginning of the demo, there are some supply crates lying around. One to the right of the stone wall and behind the sandbags, on the right side of the road, and another behind the artillery piece by the house. There is also one more to the left rear of the house, it has a sniper rifle in it.. and there is a bazooka somewhere. Find em! (Direct control + practice + sniper rifle = FUN)

Your tank: It doesnt have much fuel in the beginning, so drive it to a useful position near the fork in the road, so you can pretty much have a good range of fire by the area around you and up the road. You should only have one man in the tank once it runs out of fuel, which it will in about five seconds of driving it. There should be some shells for the tank in one of the supply crates, although I think it might artillery shells, so dont take my word on it. Anyways, after the first way (hehe), make sure you refill your tank with fuel from other tanks, and you can always STEAL other tanks by repairing them with your repair kit (inside your sherman) and then putting a man inside. The more men, the better your tank operates. There are four slots in the tank (four more where men can ride on the body for transport) that are a gunner, reloader, and driver. If you only have one guy in there, you can only drive, or aim the turret, or reload the turret. More people = better function.

Falling behind....: There are some men that come into the game unannounced to help you that you can control. Dont let them die! They will show up (as well as the rest of your units) TEAL on your mini map. Allies are green, enemies are red, yellow is a dead ally that you can revive (I think thats online only, though) and also an unmanned vehicle.

Weapons: Not sure, but you can hold on tab to have all the weapons on the ground highlighted so finding the one you want to use is easier. This might be a retail only feature, though, dont take my word on it.

Infantry vs Tanks, not a good mix, but a last resort: Only certain weapons are effective against tanks that infantry can wield on their own besides pieces of artillery that they have to man. Bazookas, naturally, take up quite a bit of room in the inventory, so you will probably have one man dedicated to wielding just it. Moltov cocktails (beer bottles) are very effective against tanks, but MAKE SURE TO HIT THEIR ENGINE'S, or else you will waste the cocktail! The engine will then burn, as well as the inside of the tank, and the crewmen will climb out, and if your lucky? They'll be on fire, YAY! You can also use anti tank grenades, which looks like a metal plated german grenade. They explode on contact with the ground, just like moltovs, so get a direct hit on the engine for larger tanks (not all tanks are big enough that they must be hit in the engine with it), or for smaller units, just hit them anywhere, or extremely close. Careful, if you are holding a moltov or AT grenade in your main hand and you are shot, they will explode with you, .. because they got shot too. Not a good way to end the day for nearby allies.

Of course, you can also use anti tank mines. Oh! And you can burn down forests with moltovs, which is fun to try out. Fire spreads from tree to tree, so if a tank is in a forest, by all means, light that forest up and watch the tank burn if he doesnt start to move his ****.

EDIT:: Still writing more, maybe. I'll add on what I think I need to, so if you are playing demo dont forget to check back.

Its an RTS, although there is no base building or management. You get units, and you use them, simple as that. Its very heavily focused on tactics. I dont really like RTS's too much just because it turns into a unit pumping war and there really arent any tactics like flanking, but this is nothing like those, and I'm in love with it, so that should prove it. Give the demo a run!

EDIT:: Direct control is really what sets it apart, as well as the depth of the game, you scavenge off of anything and its really one of those "your imagination is the limit" except for clmbing up top the tanks and ripping open the hatches, then throwing a grenade in and killing the crew. tried that. the game is honostly fun, you all need to check out the demo!

I'm actually interested in getting either this or Silent Storm. The quality (or lack thereof) of the co-op multiplayer in HoWW2 is very likely to be the deciding factor for me.
  • HazeHaze O RLY? Join Date: 2003-07-07 Member: 18018Members, Constellation
Co-op is just like playing the normal campaign with.. another person. You both get the units split between yourselves in the campaigns, and you can both tackle the entire campaign together, or just single missions of it, as well as the bonus missions (like the mission in the demo) that arent linked together in any what way. The co-op quality is very, very good from what I've seen. I havent touched single player and am instead playing through the entire campaign in pieces with friends. this game is a very fun game to play with friends just because of the interactivity between you and the environment.

There is also deathmatch things you can play. Team deathmatch, king of the hill, assault, area control, etc... very, very fun, and very simple to get started on, thats what we're playing.

the mod scene for the game is somewhat active and a little slow at times, but there are mods out there. One of which thats comming out very soon that will have an entire campaign comming with it, one out that already has an entire campaign with it, both being Storm over Europe (released) and Storm over Asia (in the process of making). In Storm over Asia you get to be Japanese, not included in retail version, and its made by the same people that made Storm over Europe, naturally, which is probably the main stay of the community right now. There are other mods out there as well, plenty to chose from, so you will get more missions as time goes on to do with friends or on your own.

This game will let friends really, REALLY have a lto of fun, especially on ventrillo. Great reactions from people.

If after what I wrote doesnt convince you that this game is leet beef with awesome sauce a man named Llyranor that posts in the thread at that link (scroll down a bit, its the very long reply) will. This is defenantly a much more in depth explanation for the game and what you can do, and also a comparision between it and another one. Its probably ten times better than mine, but refer back to this thread on help in the demo.

Yes, there is a tutorial in the actual game, too, no worries. Its a very, VERY well done tutorial.

Have you tried changing the sound options? I assume it doesnt lock up the game and the buzzing sound is in fact only a sound playing throughout the entire timeframe after four seconds.

Man you really need to put periods and commas in, no offense, but its really hard to read at times.

Err, if your asking if MP is good, then yeah, its really good, it will probably be the main fold of what most of us play since .. well, I assume most of you play online on mutliplayer more often than single player because you find it more enjoyable! Anyways, mutliplayer is great, no bugs plaguing it. Find a good host and your good.

And its a good topic, I'm getting people to download an awesome demo man! More people need to be aware of this game, there wasnt really a media blitz of it. If they put a decent commercial up of it it would probably sell like hot ceaks, but they really didnt.

So its up to the community to SELL IT FOR THEM!

Wow. Its funny: In the demo, you can see the mass potential this thing has. But the demo level sucks so badly, it ends up turning you off!

First off: 3 men and a tank as my ENTIRE force? The tank requires all 3 men to use? Wait, so that means my entire force is a tank? Wow. Wait a second, there are troops all around here- what, I can't command them? But their colonel is worthless, I could command us and take over the town! Wait...what do you mean the tank has *no* fuel, whatsoever? Oh fine, I'll make a standing defense. Okay, now that all the germans are dead, I'll take that truck-Wait, let me get back out because its a little too uncomfortable in there. Okay, back in- oh crud, tank shell! Where'd that thing come from? It what? IT SPAWNED OUT OF THE AIR?! Great, now we have no way of saving the colonel!

AKA, the entire demo was a practice in pointless frustration. I like tactics, I really do- but you don't give me a 90% crippled fighting force and tell me to win takes tactcs. Anyone would call you *stupid* to call that tactics. Comon, with an engine that good, the level could've been 10x better.

Its funny: In the demo, you can see the mass potential this thing has. But the demo level sucks so badly, it ends up turning you off!

First off: 3 men and a tank as my ENTIRE force? The tank requires all 3 men to use? Wait, so that means my entire force is a tank? Wow. No, you only need 1 person to drive a tank or operate it.
Yes you only have enough fuel to get to the fork in the roads.
Yes there is a lot of bad guys.
Yes this game is strategically HARD, that's what makes it fun!

What you want to do is fight off the first wave with rpgs/grenades/1 person in the tank and then either find a car in the garage (middle-left of map), shoot door to open and drive it back or take over a tank and kill everyone.

I reviewed the demo. Check it.

If I wasn't so stingy I would buy this game now. But I'm waiting 2 years for it to be cheaper.

    Oh look, more complaining:

Why is it that whenever I try to take control of my average soldiers, it *refuses* to let me just use his....ONLY WEAPON? Why does it *default* to his grenade? What idiot thought that was a good idea? Makes it nigh on impossible when it comes to grabbing that car.
