Hivesight - A Stroke Of Design Genius

I'd just like to take a few minutes to congratulate the NS team on the Hivesight feature, which I consider to be a stroke of design genius rivalling just about any game interface feature of the last 20 years.

It's sheer class, useable, atmospheric, informative and intuitive. Without it features like enhanced sight just wouldn't be the same.

/me tips hat to NS team. Top work.

There are a number of innovations in this game that blow other "retail" products to pieces. The command interface, hivesight... This is truly and incredible game. I haven't seen anything really "new" in a fps in quite some time.

Natural-Selection is a very innovative game, if other game developers were half as creative as the NS dev team was with their creation then the gaming scene would be much more interesting than it is today instead of realistic warfare, realistic warfare, The Sims Omg Expansion #64, realistic warfare, realistic warfare, generic stealth game, realistic warfare, etc, etc.

i bet you all 10,000 dollars a piece that when this game blows CS straight outta da goddamed water, it will be mimmicked by all the "professional" developers with big corporate funding *cough cough Sierra/EA cough cough* and thus become a genre of its own.

Like i once said, this game is godly enough to tear the winds of time from the sky of the gaming world now and forever.

'Course that's just my opinion, i could be wrong.

This is not true at all! Not every game out there is a Sims [ofmg stupid game] or a realistic warfare game. The problem today is, in the PC gaming world, if you arnt made by BLIZZARD, or are a HL mod, or are a Mass Mulity Play Online Game, then no one cares what kinda game it is they just ignore it. Look at the Age of Empires Sieres or Tribes 2. AWSOME games IMHO but never really got all that big because AOE wasnt made by Blizzard and Tribes 2 aint a HL mod. UT another most AWSOME game, made it close and then failed, cause again NOT A HL MOD!

The problem isnt the games, its the players. They want whats trendy and right now HL and BLIZZARD are as trendy as you can get when it comes to PC gaming.

And as for CS being a GREAT game, it really isnt, its Trend that all. If it wouldnt have been a HL mod that game would have bite the de_dust [sorry the bitta nerd in me had to do that] a long time ago. Now i like the game and played it alot, but ive played alot games that wernt that great and ill play alot more. The game gave nothing new tho the gaming world, except maybe, fast dying. And about 90% of the games players spend the 5 hours on the game dying and then spamming WTF or BS or THATS **obscenity** or I HATE THIS GAME. I hardly ever see people actually having fun in that game, and for good reason when i can step around a corner and dye withing 1 second from some guy either AWPing me or getting a HS from some guys spraying his AK.

And look at Diablo 2. That game i played for about 20 hours a day for 4 months after the expansion came out. When i was done i prayed i could get the last 4 months of my life back, to bad i cant. That game is horribly repetative and boring as hell, but hey everyone else was playing so i joined in. I broke my CD eventually and swore never to do that again. To my suprise people still play that game heavly and find enjoyment, cant figure that one out.

Now if someone can give me a DAMN good reason why im wrong about Diablo and CS i may say im sorry, but seirously those games only made it cause trend, not cause they are all that great of games.

Dont know bout that there sonny. Guess what, people today fear complexity and thought in games. AND THAT IS FACT NO ONE CAN SAY IM WRONG. The games today are patheticly easy and thats the way people like it. NS has to much thought invovled to "tear the winds of time from the sky of the gaming world" it may stick around for us guys that do enjoy thought in our games, but for the most part i dont see CS losing, or any huge game for that matter, to NS or any other game UNTIL HL2 or TF2. Those 2 may have a chance.

another plus to hivesite is that people wont find wallhacks too usefull since we can see any tagged marines on the map <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Great post thescapegoat...i completely agree i played early cs and quit..tried diablo 1 and hated the fact that it was simply *click click click* who can be happy with skilless clicking? and the sims? dont get me started there. And i believe tribes2 wasnt as popular as it could of been just because of the companies backing it but im not going to get into that here. I dont think ns will completely shake the gaming community but it will turn a few heads here and there. Now dont get me wrong i love the game but as stated people seem to enjoy games where thought and skill are useless.

I don't think u should bash major companies for not being "innovative", they have some real creative, smart designers. The problem is, when they spend 2, 3 years making a game, that game has to SELL, they have to be SURE that what they're making will be appreciated and loved after 2, 3 years, and most companies will definitely not take the risk of making a game such as Natural-Selection because the risk is simply too great.

Man i dont think FLAYRA did it all himself... did he.... hmmmm... if so yes i agree, god. But sorry man it takes alot to call someone God. While the games rocks i wouldnt get carried away der bud.

NS even tho its has some glitches and bugs is prolly the most polished HL mod I have ever seen for a first release save for mebbe Buzzybots. I thank them for not releasing it to soon. It is far better to work on a game for a few more months and get it done right than it is to bow to the pressure of the gamers and release it with all sorts of probs and bad graphics. The hard work of the NS team shows in thier product.

the problem is not everyone knows about this mod.

i asked some people on my buddy list on aim, and they had no idea what ns was.

The game is more then just code. And i could be wrong but i think he still had help with that. But i do know he had people doing the MAPs and SOUNDs and MODELs. And thats what i ment, i wasnt just refering to code.

I want an option to turn hivesight off actually. When a marine is at a distance, or moving slowly, its fine. But sometimes its very slow to update & blocks your sight, staying on screen when the marine is in view and lagging behind his location. Also, try aiming at a distance when you have a white circle a 'Hive Location: Feedwater' right where your target is.

It's good, but like a tool should be possible to turn off sometimes.

I was thinking of this earlier myself. The yellow blobs can block your view. I was thinking, just have the hivesight automatically fade when it's right infront of you so it never interfered with your aim.

sierra isn't a developer, it's a publisher, they published HL too.

Penny Arcade mentioned NS in the news posts, both while it was in development, (This sounds really cool) when it was released, (NS is out! Can anyone tell me if it's good?) and after they finally got their hands on it. (Sweet Jesus, this is good! *insert NS-playing anecdote here*)

So, relax. If nothing else, at least <i>the hardcore gamers</i> are being attracted to NS. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
