Did Co_ Kill Ns_?

Ths is not to start a huge flame war or an excuse for everyone to freak out. I know a lot of people say this but I really have been playing NS since the night it was released (jp=fps was great bytheway). I played CS when it came out and also Dod back when we had 4 grenades. As all of these games development progressed they looked cooler and cooler, however someof what I liked about the game left also. I remember when CS 1.4 came out I thnk was when I stopped playing that. And when the 1st dod 1.0 came out I stopped liking that. I have been putting a lot of thought into this lately because NS last is the HL based game I enjoy.
When 2.0 came out I at first hated the concept of co maps I thought it was cheasy like dod style CS maps and an atempt to apease everybody while reaching a broader group of people. I now play more co maps then anything else not as much because enjoy them more then when I played the older NS, but because wth the change of game styles game the change in the games community. Before there was a deffinite learning curve and a real teaching enviorment. I remember takng in tons of people on AIM and redphive to teach them how to play. Those guys would ether get frustrated and leave or they would get better and we would have some of the most amazing 3-4 hour long epic battles. It seems that now if you want to play a long game the only gaurentee is a seigemap. I am sure a lot of you have been in the one man marine team situation with NSplayer as your only backup. But now NS player does not want to learn the game as much maybe because of my lack of patience in teaching or his in learning because of the new co maps. The point of this is not to put down the development of the game but to maybe look at it from an unspoken perspective. How about alien species that are CO maps only. I know it sounds ludacris but I think the more you treat the two seperate game types as seperate games the more likely you are to make both groups really happy instead of both of them just appeased. Instead of serperating the games you could also incorporate personal xp in the NS game with limited upgrade options that would have precendence over say starting gun so you do not have to wait for comm. I would really like to become a constallation member and I would really like to preorder the game but it is very hard to justify for me because of the previous betrayal from other developers serving themselves while trying to reach a broader market while not serve me progressing the game that I love. The most blatant example of this other than the co maps would be dod_hill not dod parachute maps. Once again I am not saying this to try to put down flayra or any of the development team. But I am saing this to simply try to protect the game I love.

P.S. seeing a jpfuel upgrade to make it like the old 100fps jp fuel would be super SWEET

P.S.S. is there a mailing list for any more Boston Lans?

Co has really increased the amount of people playing NS but it turn it has brought down the quality of the newer players who never will play NS because it's boring. The result of this is not hard to see if you check the amount of populated co servers compared to the amount ns populated servers....

CO has drawn in many new players, but these new players have such low levels of play that a seasoned NS veteran would have no problem destroying five or six of them simultaniously. Since this has dire reprecussions in NS mode (Com has to spend more res for equipment) most of the people attracted by CO have hissyfits and quit when they die on an NS map. All we NS guys can do is shake our heads and pity their future employer.

Yes, CO killed the Natural Selection.

Remembered those minutes, where you just have relaxed in a hive room, or anywhere else, watching the map's animation while you waited for that call "damn, I need help here!"

I realy miss it, that a(n alien) team can operate completely seperated in single units (to a specific point) and every toothwheel fullfited its own role.. The skulk was skulky, the skulk was mighty - today it's only a weenie. I realy miss that kind of a game that you want to play until one side finaly stepped the enemy into the dust - and you suddenly realize its 3 in the morning and you have to be at work in 4 hours. It's realy sad, that Flayra doesn't like, what a realy great part of the comunity realy liked - and played the game for that reason.

It is even more sad that there are way to much n00bs (the unwilling to learn kind of new by) for the community to support - NS can't take that much new players. It's realy realy sad that the classic mode is dominated by the new mode, that plays like a better version of cs (at least).

I vote "yes" - CO pulled NS down.
So deep below, that I didn't played since the upgrades to the page are completed.

People that played NS before CO came about, will think that NS > CO (by far).
People that joined when CO was about and then moved into NS will think that CO is useful to teach the basics of "Killing" for NS, they just had to move on and learn NS.

imo co is more likely to pull people towards ns, than no co at all. If a "newbie" joined NS to start and received little help from other players he might think NS is too complicated and a little stupid, and quit playing. But if they know about CO, the aspect of fighting might intrigue them to play NS too.

We need to remember that "Newbies" are the future of clans in NS. The future "Pros" and maybe even the future developers. All they need is time and as much help from the community as possible.

that's another thing - NS has become optimized for clan and competive play.

But the heart lies in the Public Servers, not in Leages and this crap.

Yup, co definitely decreased the quality of ns pub play.

The problem from my point of view is, that you can play co without teamwork. You'll maybe loose the round, but who cares if your're on top of the scoreboard.

You learn how to use the weapons, but you don't learn the concept of ns.

I still like my option of splitting co and ns..
Make 2 diff. installers: 1 co, 1 ns.
Install them both in diff folder.. (f.e. half-life/co & half-life/ns)
This way we get a NS: Classics & NS: Combat in 'third party games'
So people who like to play ns: classics, are sure they'll get good quality games.

Ok, the community will sort of like get split, but at least both sides are sure they can get good games.

I've played NS off and on since it came out on Halloween however many years ago. I've come to like CO better because I'm tired of losing games because of teammates. In CO, I can pull most of the weight and have a dramatic effect on the outcome of the game.

Do not make a broad generalization. I have been playing NS for a very long time and combat is the only thing that keeps me playing. Why? I'll let you figure this one out.

I hate threads like this also. Dont you think that people that like to play CO over NS do so because they find it more enjoyable than NS? Think please and dont come bashing CO.

the first time i played natural selection, i joined a CO_ server, unaware of the different gamemodes. needless to say, i didn't play again for quite some time after that...not until i realized that there was another gamemode that actually required some skill and teamwork (NS), and wasn't just some lame alternative to team deathmatch. i haven't been on the scene long, but i can tell you from experience that the people that frequent NS servers are usually a lot easier to get along with (read mature) than those i find on CO. also, CO servers always seem to see a lot more cheats (as the frenetic, jump·in/jump·out play almost condones it), but that's just my personal experience...

The 2 installers is a bad/stupid idea. Do you have 2 installers for CS because they have different types of maps? no. Combat, Classic, It is ALL Natural Selection.

I say that Combat pulled the community to a different direction. It expanded its playerbase, and let some people get into the games easily without understanding every single detail and people calling them nubs and n00bs when they ask that that big space cow thing is.

I agree that the average Combat player is less mature and cares less about the community, but it brings popularity to the game. It also brings diversity. When i am tired of dealing with crappy commanders, or res whoring aliens, I don't just leave the computer anymore. I can go play NS in a different style, and still have fun. I think it has been a success.

no, its rinse, lather, and repeat

but yes co maps have dumbed down ns to a tfc style rush-die-rush-die fest that was what i wanted to get away from when i first started ns. the community has now split into those who like and play co exclusively and those who play ns exclusively. unfortunately, this may mean the end of the ns_ style of play in the future

bah at first i tought hmm im the "before co player" and like ns to.But then if i started realy thinking i got to the point that i dont realy care.I love ns and i love co, both are fun and diversive.I play them both and both of them are played. Its just a gamemode for christs sake like ctf, domination or something to me.I dont think co killed anything, it just expanded natural selection. Now go play ns or co and kill the opposite gamemode if you want. And also i think noones that stupid that if a server changes to a ns map a player cant understand its not co anymore, and if there are truly these kind of people there present in every game as children who just cant understand what to do.

I play more CO than NS just now, but I'm beginning to get a hankering for the feeling of teamwork that only NS has ever provided. I remember playing late into the night trying to work out optimal turret/pg layouts. I would never trust myself to command nowadays though.

OK, we did not hacve this discussion once, we did not have it ten times, we did not have it a hundred times, we are by now chasing astronomical figures with this debate's frequency. Seeing that absolutely zilch new aside from a tempsuspension for one member was brought on the table by this one, I'll just go ahead and ***lock*** it.
