Staying In Shape, Besides Thumb Work

Who here gets their weekly excerise in?
So i was reading an article in some magazine the other day about the declining fitness levels of American kids. Today an even larger percent of US kids are obese. gee who would have thought. Americans? over weight?
One of the main factors attributed to this is of coures, those evil video games.

Dont laugh to loud you people of the rest of the world b/c trends also indicate that Europe and some countries in Asia and in Austrailia, they may be having the same problems as well in the not so near future.

On an interesting side note the game Dance Dance revolution both the at home version and the arcade version got a positive note for encouraging phyiscal activity during game play lol.

Which reminds me, who here remembers playing track and field on old school nintendo with the little running mat lol. And how many of you all cheated by just bashing the mat with your hands. I know you did dont lie lol. I did it too when I played it. hehe ooh how we thought we were so crafty to out wit the computer runner.
muhahaha

*cough cough where was I? oh yea

So I was just wondering how the rest of the NS community stacked up.

I for one like to think I have some pretty strong thumbs and fingers from all this key pressing and mouse clicking lol.(then again firing an HMG into the hive on full auto doesnt require a whole lot of clicking but oh well )

But besides these thumbs of steel I always did lots of sports in high school and martial arts.

I dont have time for all that stuff now but I go to the gym, run, and lift weights 4 days a week. Im no where near huge and "built" but I have some nice muscle tone lol. And I have only 6.3% body fat if that counts for anything.

So what do some of you people do if anything? And why do u do it? Recreation? To stay in shape? or for job in some cases?

PS

speaking of DDR, try this with your keyboard.

Heh. Well in America some people eat 2-4 times of what they are required (as in they eat stuff even if they're not exactly hungry) to eat. *Eats some bacon*. One of my new year's resolutions was to get into shape this year, or at least try. First step was to give up smoking, thats going well...then I'll start getting physical.

I don't have any fitness plans, I don't do any regular exercise, and I'm showing a bit [a lot] of fat and poor health for it. Lately I've been going to the beach as much as I can, and since more often than not there are a few undercurrents, it's a struggle to keep yourself from dying, so you get some exercise out of that [I hope] Aside from the potential exercise, the beach is just generally fun.

I live in sydney, Australia so I guess that doesn't apply to some people [props to english beaches.. do you like pebbles? i know I do!]. I might go running with my mate if it's any fun, but I don't think it would be. In winter I'll have soccer so I'll put effort into that, and for summer I have the beach.

I don't like the gym and I'd rather that anything good about my body was a result of a healthy, active lifestyle, instead of being an illusion of.

I'm still in highschool. I play football, track, and I'm also in P.E. We run the mile once a week under 7 minutes....I think that's enough exercise.

If I'm bored some days I'll go run a mile or two... I feel so short being 5'11

    No, you do not win.

Unless you've somehow managed to get a metabolism that builds up muscles for you??

    Weight loss != Fitness gain.

I used to train (swimming) 5 nights a week for 2-3 hours, then competitions at the weekends, stoped that in 2002 tho. Used to ski 1 night a week and the odd day during the week, stopped that last month.

I still do a lot of walking because I rely on public transport to get from A to B and sometimes they move A a few hundred meters or it isnt running at all... (sillt privitised bus service(UK)). Then thers the fact that im on a hill so its a hard walk up on the way home every night.

My Metabolism sux. I have my own weights in the basement and I work out 5 days of the week but I'm still fat. Really don't know why. But probably cause I eat too much sweets. I stopped it though.

My metabolism is a beast. 133 Pounds (Says google conversion) and 5'11.

Used to be a swimmer too, but cooming to uni stoped me because i don't know of any pools i can easily get to (i can't drive). I'm going to have to get something sorted out though, i used to really quite like going even though my instructor kicked **** evey time till it hurt.

Although I fell out of my groove a bit after I had arthroscopic knee surgery, I am a distance runner. My regimen includes running every other day at least 6 miles and 12 if it falls on a weekend: 24 to 30 miles a week. On the days I don't run I am at the sports club pumping iron, so I do something at least 6 and usually 7 days a week.

I have ran 7 marathons, and training for them alters everything. We normally start increasing our long runs 12 weeks prior to the race and your diet and weightlifting changes significantly. The training is normally much harder than the race itself.

I smoked 2 packs a day for 30 years before I quit in 94 - the best thing I ever did. I joined the local Q, dropped 50 lbs in 5 months, ran my first 5k on Thanksgiving day 1995, and now you know the rest of the story. Oh yeah, I am almost 57 and am at 14% body fat.

I went to the gym everyday with my friend and we would do like 10 mins of cardio and an hour of machines and the next day we would do like 35 mins of cardio and left.

Now I play tennis for like 2hours a day for my school.

Since I'm trying to get into the military academy I borrowed one of those bicyclelike workout contraptions, Like this one

But I'm in a shape like a soggy washingcloth so I need to use it alot

if you want to stay in shape, it's as simple as this: just walk...walk around...walk instead of whatever form of transportation that usually would do when shopping at stores...

Heh I need one of those.

I used to have god given metabolism, but after hitting 7th grade it all went downhill xD

Doesn't matter. As long as I keep running on the rof for 10 minutes and cut down the amount of food I eat, I should be fine.

And get more calcium and proteins, as well as Vitamin C in. Height++

They are really handy, they display how fast would go if it was a real bicycle, it shows how much rpm's you make, which is really awesome for me since the endurance test for the academy requires me to go between 60-70 rpm for a minimum of 15 minutes and an as low as possible heartrate

    Fitnesscontraptions ftw !

I'm 24, 6', and 135 to 140lbs. I have coffee in the morning, a coke during my break, and a meal at night. I perform manual labor at a grocery store between 35 to 40 hours a week.

There are two things you can do to decrease your weight. You can increase your activity to make yourself burn more energy, or you can decrease the amount of food you eat.

If you decrease your food intake too much, you deprive yourself of nutrients. If you increase your activity too much, you'll damage your body. The most common thing to do is to gradually increase your activity, usually with exercising, while gradually decreasing food intake, usually with a diet. The weight should start decreasing, until it stabilizes at a lower value. At that point, you MAINTAIN these levels. If your metabolism starts to slow, you begin the process again, until you reach your desired weight level.

People usually fail at this process because they abandon it. Remember, you will have to maintain these levels for the rest of your life. You need motivation to succeed at this process. For example, I get paid to exercise. I seek to eat less food to save money. Hence, money is my motivation.
