  most ambience is triggered by the map, but there is some coded in game (if i recall)
  
  there isn't really a way to make it play more often.

  take the sounds and play them using winamp

  I like some of the music sometimes, but theres other times when I'm really not in the mood for it. so doing something like that would be nice to have a little bit more of control over it.

  Oh yeah, winamp is great for in game, hot keys are;
  
  ctrl+alt insert play
  ctrl+alt home pause
  ctrl+alt pgup skip back
  ctrl+alt pgdn skip forward
  ctrl+alt end stop
  
  Dead easy, really useful in game.

  Heh some of the music comes from Half-Life,like the intro music as you are loading a server game.
  The rest,I hope comes from Winamp. (source of mp3 heaven and visualiations) I do love that depressing sound when you lose also.
