Updated for beta 6. Lots of sweat and long nights have gone into this. So let me know what you think. For those of you who don't need a manual, you can mess around with the damage calculator.

I for one quite like the layout. Very simple and uncluttered which is important for new people.
Of note though is that if you can't see the blue or grey behind "Marine" and "general", respectively, at the top, your monitor might be set to dark. (I noticed that when looking at it on my lab computer just a while ago which is quite dark for some reason.) Nothing that detracts from the information though.

That's been tweked a bit, see if ti's still a problem bigd.

esuna offered to pretty it up, so it doesn't look like it was made by a programmer.

i like it a lot. especially the damage calculator. however, i feel the background is a bit too plain. and it does not have the feel of a serious manual.

I would suggest using either the same layout or a slightly modified version of the original NS Manual. It looked awesome!
  • xesxes Join Date: 2003-07-09 Member: 18055Members
I think a sort of tree diagram would be cool. Like when a main topic is clicked it expands to show the sub-sections. kind of like explorer view in windows.

also, this is a pretty freakin awesome guide. it'd be cool if it was included in the b6 release.

Personally I would've liked to have seen a seperate section for marine upgrades/researches. Still a great manual though, easy to find the things your looking for and very imformative for both new and more experienced players.

Looks great. Only a small detail might be missing.

I dont know bout b6 but in b5 you need an ip before u can build a pg.

Other than that: I want a sticky for this in the new player forums.

I'll update the manual (FYI, you don't need an IP to drop PGs once you have phase tech, just need them for the PG research).

Dont get me wrong, i love it really, i just ment that it needs more of a nice GUI with a bit of NS feel GUI to it, i love the Manual itself, it just had the look of a 1990's progrmmer worklog, it needed/needs the TLC of a person to spurce it up visualy, which Esuna is doing, but i do like it, and yes, Niteowl >me...

    <3Niteowl Good Work

Ps: the Skulk picture and the Jet pack wearing marine are not the best poses imo, the Jp looks like he has a sore knee and the skulk looks like he's doing a piruet.

Alrighty then, been slaving away to make it a bit prettier. With esuna's nifty border image thingamahoochie type dealies, it's looking better. Take a gander.

    recommendation:
    - adding to the siege turret < special ability > : incredible splash damage, will blast any lower lifeform in the same room of the target into the afterlife; don't expect to spawn safely in a hive under attack by this baby

    few notes:
    - i don't recall aliens being able to regenerate their life every second without regen
    - ocs prefer players over structures?, is that true?, if it is - it doesnt always work, eg the other day i was taking out ocs that a gorge was using to kill a restower and they didn't fight back

    comments:
    - very good manual

Not in version B6.. that's been changed and the manual reflects the new version.

Again changes in B6.. He mentions specifically that the manual is for the newest version of NS

Oh, no, it was fugly. It's like it was written by some middleware programmer on his teim off or something. Functional, but made your eyes bleed.

    It's not so fugly now.

The architecture for the multilingual support is almost finalized. The good news is that it'll mean no HTML work for the translators. The bad news is there will be lots and lots of little text files for you all to make. What this means that in the futures, when images need to be updated or even layout, your translations will stay in and be included in the new changes (as long as the layout changes aren't too major).

Each content area will have it's own file, and the tenative naming structure will be

name of html file_name of title_rownumber.htm

So, for example, you are translating the skulk, uses. the file would be named:
    alienClasses_skulk_row9.htm

I'll add more as I make sure this architecture isgoing to pan out.

Thanks for all your enthusiastic offers to help translate folks!

Slot 4 description on the Marine Weapons page is a little misleading. "Slot 4 can hold up to 3 items" makes it sound like it could hold 3 packs of mines, 3 grenades, 3 welders or some combination thereof (which would be cool, maybe, but it's not true <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->).

Maybe that could be rewritten, if it's even necessary.

For translators: Please PM me your email, I'll be scrapping this serverside includes idea, it'd lead to about 50 or so files :S. I'll be sending you the templates for each page for you to translate as you will.

NOTE: YOu should have a basic working knowldge of HTML if you want to do a translation, and you have to go through Zunni first (IIRC).

Completely shot down my wantings to (for some reason) create a short guide to just let players that want the basics and that it to get rolling in the game, well done.

... what did the old one look like?
