Hmg Or Shotgun?

Got a hard time shopping?
You know, alot of people want HMG's. As a commander, I select 1 or 2 people to use HMG's, and assign them to "Spray and Distract" mission. They're supposed to make the area less comfortable to walk in. Think walking in acidrain without an acidresistant umbrella.
Everyone else I give shotguns. I usually refere to those as the Light Troopers. Especially if resources are low, and I can't afford HA's to everybody (but then, what good commander would I be ).
Shotguns does 160 if all bullets hits (wich they probably don't unless closeup). Now, picture 160 times 5 (concidering it's a /16 server with 8 marines). Those Onos' can wave themselves goodbye.

HMG is only good for distraction in my opinion. It takes time to deal damage, but the shotgun does 160 at once. Sure, it DO require you to pump your shotgun, but 160x5 at once is very, very lethal.

Remember, commanders. You're their sergeant. They're your privates. YOU give THEM orders. You choose what they will equip themselves with.

    Um... OK.

You are forgetting that the Shottie is useless across the room..

    I like to give 5 HMG's, if I have the RP's, 2 welders, Jetpacks, and 2 shottgunners.

What you get is a mobile fireteam, with powerful close-range support, with a TON of damage inflicting power on any buildings that are in your path.

I find it is best to just ask the marines what they want. I wouldn't want to spend all that money only to give a marine a gun that he's not familiar with. That said, everyone always asks for hmgs, gl =\. I did have a request for a jetpack last night, that was neat...then he died 30 seconds later.

You might want to try a nading/welding/jetpack flying marine. He uses nades from afar, keeps out of direct combat with his jetpack, and uses his welder to fix up the heavies between alien waves.

I too believe to just ask the marine what weapon they want. I always either go with HA, welder and HMG as the heavy infantry. My idea of a light infantry soldier would be a jetpack, shotgun, and trip mines. I don't really like to drop GL because they are expensive and players die too much, I rather build a seige cannon.

I've been in two or three games in which none of my guys wanted HA or heavy weapons - they all wanted shotties and jetpacks.

Since they had shown themselves to be pretty combat proficient, I gave em what they wanted and they proceeded to tear it up.

Hmm.... why is it I never get a good commander when I play marines(almost never). I am absolutly in love with the Shotty and Jetpack combo! Its fun, its lethal, its onos evading time!

I think this works better if you use a clan.

Also, long corridors aren't that common in NS, I've noticed.

I personally enjoy the shotgun more than the HMG.. The HMG weighs too much for my liking, but thats easily countered by the jetpack. But still, I enjoy the Shotgun/JP combo. =D

Yes, I agree on two of those points, one. I always ask my Marines what kind of weapons they want and drop them all I can. Second I have also noticed there are not to many long corridors in NS to worry about...which, is rather helpful for aliens since...that would be the hallway of death for them.

I would always go with giving my Marines what they want, since they are usually proficent with the weapons they want in most cases...I would like to be specific with weapons, and I am at times but...most of the time...take what you want and get out that door boys.

I prefer not to use the shotgun. Why? Spray and pray. The spread is so big on it that, even if you do aim well, you still only hit part of the time, whereas even with the cone of fire from the HMG/LMG, I can still inflict more damage, just because I hit more.

I also like to use the support jetpack/welder/any gun except GL... GL sucks. It just does not seem to do anything. I have wasted entire ammo supplies over and over on alien defenses, without causing a scratch. Focus fired other weapons just works better IMO. That being said, I like to act as a medic/engineer, zipping through vents, behind enemy lines, and making offensive turret farms...

I don't know, GL's seem to work well for me either when holding one or dispensing them. Usually when the gunners are having trouble, somebody asks for the nade launcher and not soon after the towers that were giving them trouble are gone.

The main reason I don't force a shotgun on anyone is because it really does require some good aim over the spray and pray of the mg's. Occassionally someone asks for the sg, only all to happy to oblige when they do.

shotgunners should be a minority..for the close ups, hmg's for long range and turrets, etc.

I prefer shotgun, it makes more damage at short range.

I try to use JP + Shotgun/GL exclusively. In late game though, you need to crap up the HA's and HMG's.

I find the spray from a shotgun to be smaller than that of the HMG

Shotguns are great when taking on skulks, if ur good its only 1 shot kill, i stopped playing like 5 minutes ago and i kill about 5 skulks in a row with the shotgun, 2 were on me at the same time, i waited for them to get close, fired jumped to the side and fired again and killed the other one. and btw if u need long -range which almost never happens, unless ur firing on towers or a hive(i use shotguns on these anyways...) but u always have ur faithful 20 dmg a pop handgun. which is always good. Shotguns in groups are extremely deadly...and fun!

I use Shotguns as an early-game replacement for the Grenade Launcher.

Most Gorges like to build DIRECTLY around corners, as if Offense Towers track instantly onto you and fire, so you can pop out and SUPER-SHORT-RANGE gut an Offense Tower with the Shotgun, then pop behind the corner and hide again. Works well, if a bit slow. But when you only have LMGs and Shotguns...

Even though I do have a lot of troops ask for shotties, I wish more would ask instead of holding out for HMGs. Shotties are just so uber-powerful, relatively cheap, and available early on. When you're going head-to-head with a Skulk, why would you want anything else?

Then just give them shotties. Nobody's making you hand out HMGs. Actually, I use Shotguns as "punishment". If a marine isn't contributing, but is still whining for an HMG I'll give him a shotty. It's not what he wants, so he'll feel bad, but he's got a good weapon so I don't have a completely useless marine on my hands.

Oh, I've got no problem handing out HMGs either! I don't really get whined too often because I tend to gain control of the map fairly early on, leaving me plenty of resources for mid- to late-game.

I ask them what they're good with - and that's what I give them.

I must say. My dream set up is a shotgun, jetpack and a welder. Insta hive destruction. Have someone weld your armor up around 100 and its on. That shotgun is deadly accurate even at range.

ns_caged Generator hive. Flying at teh top of the room. Hitting skulks in one shot with the shot gun. 1 hit kills on skulks, lerks and gorges.

That jetpack makes gettin away from an onos easy as sunday morning. The fades...... *****MUWAHAHA****** Takes longer than the little monkies.

Shotgun, is definetly my prefered primary of choice. Then again, I take what i can get. As any good marine, Ill rush that onos with LA and LMG.
If you wont do that, you dont deserve anything else.

I play on the same servers that a guy called "The Onos Hunter" plays on. He plays with HA + Shotty... and... hunts Onos. Classy stuff
