"remove Colored Models"

<div class="IPBDescription">(unable to use some servers)</div> I've come across a problem in the last week or so on some of the servers I used to play on regularly, where i'm getting the message "removed colored models to play on this server".
The thing is, I don't know which models they're talking about specifically - whether they mean models from a 'rine vs 'rine map, "black" marines, or otherwise. The websites of the servers (I think NSArmsLab is one of them) don't give any info about what this message relates to.
Just to compound the problem, HL locks my machine up solid (hard reset reqd) if this message stays on screen for more than about 8 seconds, but if I drop the connection and try to join a server that doesn't show this message it'll sometimes let me on ok.
More often than not though, HL now bombs out and drops me onto a low-res desktop, and I need to reboot before I can try a different server - although HL is no longer active according to my task list (win98se), if I simply reload NS I get a ping of 3000ms+ (i'm on broadband) and less than 0.5fps (you read that right) :-/
Can anyone advise ?
