I'm Thinking About A Slight Computer Upgrade...

<div class="IPBDescription">let me know what you think</div> My current setup:

Asus P4P800 Deluxe mobo
<a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-140&depa=0' target='_blank'>Pentium 4 2.4ghz (B) 400mhz FSB, 512k L2 Cache</a>
Seagate 200gig 7200RPM Hard Drive (slave)
Western Digital 80gig 7200RPM Hard Drive (master)
BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC'd
1gb DDR PC3200 Ram (Kingston Value ram)

I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU to <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-171&depa=0' target='_blank'>Pentium 4 3.0E GHz 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, HTT</a> or maybe the <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-172&depa=0' target='_blank'>P4 3.2ghz (E) processor.</a>

Is it really worth upgrading? I'm kind of thinking that my current processor is bottle necking my video card and ram. If I were to upgrade, should I just go with the 3.0ghz processor, or should I really spend $40 dollars more and go for the 3.2ghz upgrade? Like always, thanks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Do you have a good cooling system for your CPU?

I bought a vantec fan for it, which got really good reviews on newegg. At the moment I have 4 fans in the front of my computer, 2 in the back, 1 on the side, and a PCI slot fan cooler thingy. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Then I think the 3.2 would be good. If you didn't have all those fans I would reccomend you get the 3.0 and buy a better cooling system with the 40$.

wow for about the same price I could get the K8V deluxe mobo and the AMD 64 3000+ (like $250). I dont know much about AMD's new processors, but is the 3000+ faster than P4 3.2E?

    You really think that the extra 200mhz on the 3.2E is worth 40 dollars? <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

AMD processors don't run at the mhz speed of there designation, for example my 2500+ runs at 1.8gig they just compare speedwise to the intel mhz designation.

The major benefit is AMD are much much cheaper.

Speaking of which I could really do with upgrading my CPU, time to see how high this motherboard will go...

Ultimately, if gaming is your thing, AMD would be the way to go, as long as the cost is comparable. The AMD64s are beasts when it comes to gaming. I'm not too sure where the 3000+ stands against a 3.2E, but either way I'm sure you'll be happy with your upgrade. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Mullet: I've got a very similary system myself (2.4B, 6800GT) and I too have been considering an upgrade, to either 3.2 or 3.4ghz. I'll probably get 1.5GB of RAM or maybe even 2GB if I can afford it.

Okay I think I'm going to sell my P4P800 Deluxe w/ the processor on ebay ($100 if I can get that), then go for an AMD build.

I was thinking maybe the 3200+ or 3500+...Anyone have any other ideas? I'd say my limit is $400 - $450.

Meh, I'd just upgrade the one part, but do whatever you feel like.

If you were buying new I would definately recommend AMD, but for an upgrade it probably isn't worth the hassle of tracking down a new mobo.

Yeah but I could practically spend the same amount and get a better processor (or just a setup that will be better for future upgrades)

The value difference usually isn't quite that much... with the possible exception of the super high end cards that you shouldn't buy unless you are some sort of millionare anyways. You usually end up saving under sixty dollars in the switch.

If you're worried about future upgrades I would wait until the 939 boards with PCIe come out.

    <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-498&depa=0' target='_blank'>3500+</a>

    <a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-502&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE' target='_blank'>3200+</a>

    Is the 3500+ really worth 100 dollars more? It's only 200mhz faster (according to the clock speed, 3200 = 2ghz, 3500 = 2.2ghz)

And can someone explain to me what the hell micron speed is? i dont get the .13micron and 90nm thing...I'm assuming the 90nm is faster because the .13micron 3500+ is like 80 dollars cheaper than the 90nm one..
